[JAWS-Users] Still having problems with JAWS speaking at the log on screen
Hi folks! This issue is an oldy but a goody, and one that hasn't been fixed for me yet. I have two windows 10 computers, and many times JAWS will not say anything at the log-on screen indicating that I can type the password. Sometimes I can press Control plus Alt plus Delete, and here the prompt to type my password. Sometimes, I have to load narrator to find where to put in the password. The behavior is inconsistent at best. I wanted to post this to the list, and see if there is anything I can do to make JAWS work better in this situation. Is there a setting that I need to check, either in Windows or in JAWS? Any help would be appreciated. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs
Hi John! I appreciate your respone to this question, along with the others who have chimed in as well. I do believe it is a resource issue, and probably could be fixed by someone who is a programmer, and knows their way around the Windows Registry. I know that we strongly encourage more RAM for users of Assistive technology products here at work. However, more RAM is not a cure all for these types of issues. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of john_just...@verizon.net Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2018 10:17 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs Hello Mike, John Justice, here. I work for the state and use configurations which are similar to the ones you describe. In the interest of correcting the problem, I brought it to the attention of our upper level Access group. Their explanation doesn't solve any issues but it might give you food for thought. 1. THE ISSUE AT HAND: apparently, what we are experiencing is the assignment of RAM. Current versions of Jaws tend to utilize a considerable amount of RAM, especially when changing from one software environment to another. The result is that the system has to {wait} for enough RAM to perform the function. 2. PROGRAM PRIORITY ASSIGNMENT: It is possible to assign certain programs on a PC so that they have a priority when RAM is distributed. This is way beyond my pay grade Mike but apparently, within reason, certain programs can be allowed to operate at the expense of others, at least temporarily. There are exceptions to this rule and certain pieces of software are assigned a permanent top priority. I imagine that the Windows operating system might have that kind of assignment. 3. According to our A. T. department, reassignment involves the division of RAM into smaller compartments which then handle this function. The entire process scares the heck out of me. It isn't something I'd want to attempt. There might be someone on our list with more technological knowledge than I have. 4. A WORKING SOLUTION: I am now operating two computers simultaneously. One is dedicated to some of the functions I need while the second unit handles primary functions. For example, I use the secondary unit to load and display Excel spreadsheets. But even with that arrangement, certain pieces of software will temporarily shut down Jaws until they are fully loaded. The down time has been measured and it is usually approximately32 seconds. 5. CREATING HOTKEYS FOR RELOADING JAWS: Finally, we have established hotkeys which can be used to encourage Jaws to restart. Occasionally, though rarely, Jaws wil not restart after one of these incidents. We use three key combinations which are dedicated to reactivating Jaws. The entire thing is frustrating to say the least, Mike. But it's something we just put up with since jaws performs so well in most other respects. Thanks Dave! Now to figure out how to open this file in NotePad using Windows 10. It doesn't give me that option. I did try to copy the file's path and then open it in Notepad, but then I was told I have to use an administrator account to edit the file. I see this most often when switching into or out of Adobe Acrobat. JAWS does not seem to play well with that program on my system, and I often have to wait that 20 or 30 seconds for JAWS to start up again. Does your employee hear the "JAWS Home Edition" or "JAWS Professional Edition" after the long delay -- then it is indeed JAWS restarting after such a shutdown. In the Shared Settings folder there is a default.jcf file that you can edit with notepad. On my system it is located: C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\enu\Default.JCF Near the end of this file is a section titled [AutoRestart] where you can disable this "feature" or extend the time before JAWS shuts down and restarts. A following section also lets you decide how long to delay for specific applications. See if disabling or changing the delay times helps. Be sure only to edit this file in a simple editor like Notepad to avoid inserting other ASCII characters. Re: [JAWS-Users] links in a document
Hi there! When you say "get a link out of a document", what are you wanting to do with the link? If you simply want to activate it, there are a few ways to do that. If you simply want to copy the link into an address bar, you can do that as well. We just need a little more info as to what you're trying to do. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of patti Sent: Monday, February 12, 2018 12:39 PM To: jawsSubject: [JAWS-Users] links in a document Hey Gang, Do you know how to get a link out of a document? Re: [JAWS-Users] Copying and pasting on the new job
Hi there! You can resolve this issue very easily. When you are in Chrome, press Insert plus V to pull up your quick settings. Then type copy in the search box. You should have an option that comes up saying something like select copy f;ulll content. You need to change this option by pressing the spacebar to copy from virtual cursor. Give this a try, and see if it resolves this problem. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Michael Babcock Sent: Friday, December 15, 2017 8:41 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Copying and pasting on the new job That would work, however I was hoping I wouldn’t have to virtualize a webpage that I assumed should already have been virtualized in order for me to copy and paste text. This option is not available in Google Chrom per sae, but there must be another way to get to any information bar like you would with alt-N in internet explorer. Thanks for the how-to reminder. Re: [JAWS-Users] does Microsoft edge work with jaws yet
It really depends on the web-site, and page elements, as Chrome handles certain elements differently than IE does. I have to use a combination of browsers at this point. Follow the same steps. When you get to the show fields option, press enter to toggle the BCC field off. It will say BCC field checked. Sent: Monday, July 31, 2017 1:28 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Changing forms mode behavior on selected web-sites Hi Mike, Check this out: Flexible Web Frequently, you will encounter Web pages that contain a lot of excess content which can make it difficult to locate the actual content you want, or interupts the flow when reading. For instance, many sites contain Google ad frames. These can be troublesome for JAWS users as they disrupt the reading order of surrounding content. Flexible Web enables you to take more control of Web pages by allowing you to quickly find the content you are looking for, as well as hide content that interrupts the reading experience. You can hide sections of content, such as Google ad frames or other types of unnecessary content, for a smoother reading experience. In addition, you could have JAWS begin reading at a level one heading, or ARIA main region, as these may contain the most interesting content. To use Flexible Web, open a Web page you want to customize in Internet Explorer or Firefox. Then, move the Virtual PC Cursor to the page element you want to hide, or from where you want to start reading when the page first loads. Activate the Flexible Web wizard by pressing the layered keystroke INSERT+SPACEBAR, X. Alternatively, press INSERT+F2 to open the Run JAWS Manager dialog box, then choose Flexible Web. Through several easy-to-follow steps, The Flexible Web wizard that opens provides you with two options: hide, or start reading at the selected element. The wizard then guides you through the process of creating a temporary customization by giving you various choices about the selected element and how you want to hide it or from where exactly to start reading. Once the customization has been made, it is immediately applied to the page. For instance, if you choose to hide all frames containing advertisements, you will not see any advertisements when navigating the page after making this temporary customization. If you are not happy with how a customization is working, you can open the Flexible Web wizard to undo the last customization you made. When you return to the page, you can choose a different element or the same one, then reactivate the Flexible Web wizard to retry the customization again perhaps with different criteria. For example, in the case of hiding those advertisement frames mentioned earlier, you probably want to hide all of them, not just the first one on the page. The wizard will provide you with choices about whether to hide just the first one or all of them. You can create as many customizations for a page as you want. Once you have created one or more customizations, you can save them as a rule, which is applied every time you load the particular page or site. To indicate that a rule has been applied to a page, JAWS plays a sound after the page loads. Rules can be applied to the current Web page, entire Web site, or globally for all Web sites. Otherwise, customizations are only temporary and are lost as soon as you navigate away from the current

roperties associated with the rule. When you are done examining the properties of the current rule, press TAB to move to the Close button and press ENTER to return to the viewer. Select the Close button once more to exit the viewer and return to the browser. Using Other JAWS Features on a Web Page Where Flexible Web Rules are Applied Where applicable, other JAWS features such as PlaceMarkers, Custom Page Summary, and Personalized Settings will continue to be in effect for a page where Flexible Web rules have been applied to it. This depends on whether a setting applied as a Flexible Web rule conflicts with a setting that is not a Flexible Web rule. For example, if you have created a PlaceMarker for a page that is located on an element that has now been hidden because a Flexible Web rule has been applied to that page, the PlaceMarker will not be found when you attempt to move to it. For pages that automatically update information frequently, any Flexible Web rules applied will still be in effect as the page updates. Additionally, if a page automatically sets focus to a control, such as an edit field for searching, this takes precedence over any rules that start reading at a specific element. When selecting and copying text from a Web page where Flexible Web rules have been applied, if Select and Copy Full Content Using Onscreen Highlight is selected in Quick Settings, all content is copied, including any hidden content that was included in the selection. If you do not want to include any hidden content when selecting, choose the Select and Copy from Virtual Cursor option. Turning Off Flexible Web Flexible Web is on by default. To turn it off so rules are not applied when pages load, do the following: Press INSERT+F2, and select Settings Center. Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to load the JAWS default settings. In the Search edit box, type "Flexible Web" without the quotes. Press DOWN ARROW to move to Flexible Web in the filtered search results in the tree view. Next, press SPACEBAR to enable or disable Flexible Web. Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! Sent from my iBarstool. Arguing with a woman is like reading a software license agreement. You can turn this off for all of your documents in word by following the following steps: 1. Open Microsoft Word. You can close the document that opens, if a blank one does load at start-up. 2. Press Alt plus F, followed by the letter T to bring up the options menu. Use your arrow key or press the letter T until you find the trust center option, and then tab over to the button that says Trust Center Settings. Press enter or the spacebar to open this menu. 3. Now use the arrow keys or press the letter P until you hear Protected View. Once this is highlighted, press the tab key, and uncheck the three boxes that you hear announced. 4. Once you have unchecked these boxes, press the OK button, which should save your settings. 5. Lastly, try to open the file that you want to view in Word. JAWS should now read it for you. Re: [JAWS-Users] An Updated Text Tutorial on Using the Google Chrome Browser with JAWS or NVDA
Hi there! Once in Chrome, press the Alt key to pull up your menu of options. Ust the arrow keys until you find settings. Press enter to open the settings page. The quickest way to find the content part is to type the word content into the search box. Press enter on the search button or after typing the word content. The settings related to content will then be displayed. You can use your button navigation to locate content settings. You should be able to find the flash settings in this section. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Maria Campbell Sent: Friday, July 7, 2017 3:07 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] An Updated Text Tutorial on Using the Google Chrome Browser with JAWS or NVDA I can't find my content to check on flash. lucky1i...@gmail.com "Preach the Gospel, and when necessary use words!" --St. Francis On 7/7/2017 2:55 PM, Mike Mote wrote: > Hi Jim! It is pasted right here in this email, so you can read it, and give me feedback. On each line, I tell you what my computer says as I take you through the Google Chrome menu, and I take you carefully through the settings web page. This is a lot like the Options page in Firefox, but it is easier to navigate. I hope this really helps you get started with Chrome, because it works so well for me. Here is the tutorial right below! Tutorial for Using the Google Chrome Browser By David Moore This tutorial will be done with the latest update of Chrome. I will also use JAWS 18 and NVDA 2017.2for this tutorial, because they both work the same in Chrome. Finally, I will use Windows 10 Creators Update latest public build. I will assume that you have downloaded and installed Chrome. There should be a shortcut on your desktop. First, I will launch Chrome. We will not create a home page until we get to the Chrome settings web page. This is a lot like the Options page in Firefox, or the Options dialog in IE. Pressing the Alt key, opens the one and only, Chrome menu, with many choices that I will arrow down through. The first very important step, is to press Windows+up arrow to maximise the window. Chrome often opens with the window not maximise, and you will get undesirable results. I will press the Alt key. The Chrome menu is open. I will press insert+up arrow to hear the first option in this menu. New Tab, CTRL+T. You can press that command right from the web site you are on. New Window, CTRL+N You can press these commands right from your web page, instead of coming here. New incognito Window. History sub menu. I will press right arrow here to see what is in this sub menu! History, CTRL+H So, there is a key command for reading your history. You can read a few sites you were on right here. I will press left arrow to close this history sub menu. Downloads, CTRL+J There is the command for opening your downloads you have downloaded with Chrome. Next, the important Bookmarks sub menu. I will press right arrow, to open this. I hear, bookmark this page, CTRL+D That command will bookmark the page you are reading. Next down arrow, says show bookmarks bar, CTRL+Shift+B That command, will show your bookmarks on your Chrome browser for all to see. I do not want that. Here is the important one. manage bookmarks The command is, CTRL+Shift+O In here, you can organize your bookmarks into folders, see the bookmarks you have imported from different browsers, and very importantly, you can download, to your computer, an HTML file of all of your bookmarks in Chrome. On your computer, you can press enter on this file, after it downloads, and a page will show up in Chrome with a list of all bookmarks you have saved in Chrome. This is an awesome way to download all of your bookmarks right to your computer, so you can back them up. That is all for manage bookmarks. Next, I hear import bookmarks and settings. press enter on this, and you can import all bookmarks and settings from IE, and Firefox, right into Google Chrome, and they will be in their corresponding folders. Now, I hear all of my saved bookmarks as I continue to arrow down. Very important! Sometimes, when I open that bookmarks sub menu, I do not land on the choices I mension here, but instead, I start hearing my saved bookmarks. If this happens, I press up arrow a few times, and it gets me to these choices. Keep in mind, that many of these choices, like bookmark manager, have key commands, so you do not have to come to this bookmarks sub menu at all. You only need to come here most of the time, to arrow through your saved bookmarks, and enter on the desired one. The next few are very self explanatory. The next one I will mension, is the more tools submenu. I will press right arrow on this. I hear Save Page as, and the command, CTRL+S. Next, Save to desktop. This allows

[JAWS-Users] JAWS issue with Outlook 2016
Good afternoon all! For some reason, whenever I have to change my exchange account password, in Outlook, JAWS will not show me the Outlook credentials box. It does show it visually, and if someone who is sighted is here, they can clearly see it. They can put my mouse on the password field, and then JAWS will announce it properly. If I don't have someone with sight around, all I hear, is "Outlook credentials not responding", which is an odd message to me. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue before, and how did you resolve it. Re: [JAWS-Users] Focus 14 versus 40
I would say that it is apersonal preference. I use the Focus 40 classic braille display every day, and I love it. The focus 14 fits needs of certain people, but I didn't like it. Again, it's a personal preference. I'm not saying it's bad. I just prefer a 40 cell display as opposed to a 14 cell display. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Crystal Sent: Thursday, June 29, 2017 10:50 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Focus 14 versus 40 I am having the hardest time deciding if I want the Focus 14 or 40. I am a brand new member to this list, and I have a question regarding the use of the touch cursor. On a web-site that I use, I am encountering buttons that do not have labels. When I activate them using the touch cursor, they perform certain functions consistently, such as activating the save file option. I am then presented with the standard save as dialog box. My question is this. Can I assign a label to this button? It is not found by either the JAWS or PC cursor. When pressing Insert plus F2, I am not seeing the option to label a button. Any help would be appreciated. Glad to be part of this list!
