[JAWS-Users] Tablets-yes or no

2017-05-27 Thread wayne smith
Tablets seem so much easier for use away from office or home but how
effective are they for us? If you are a tablet user can you advise us on
how functional they are both with the touch screen and with a wireless
keyboard? What do JAWS users need to have for a tablet to make it fully
accessible? If you know of a good article on the subject then a link to it
would be a help.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok. I confess I haven't tried the on-screen keyboard yet. I know that other
gestures work simply by doing them wherever you need them. I wonder if
there's something you need to do to be sure that you are in the edit field
like perhaps double-tapping it as you do on iOS or Android. It's the only
thing I can think of.

The following info is for JAWS 17 beta:

New in JAWS Touch Screen Support

Since JAWS 15, users have had the ability to interact with
the touch screens found on various devices like the Dell
Venue series of Windows tablets. Using one and multi-finger
gestures such as taps, flicks, and swipes, users navigate to
and activate controls, read text, and perform other common
JAWS functions. In JAWS 17, we have continued to enhance
touch screen support by providing access to the Windows
touch keyboard as well as adding the ability to edit and
select text in documents, messages, or web pages right from
the touch screen.

Support for the Windows Touch Keyboard

JAWS 17 offers full support for the Windows touch keyboard,
enabling you to write documents, email messages, and fill
out forms on the Internet right on your device's touch
screen if you do not have access to a physical keyboard.
While a regular keyboard is still recommended for writing
lengthy documents or performing complex editing tasks, using
the Touch keyboard is convenient for writing a quick note,
composing or replying to an email, or filling out a form on
a web site.

To activate the Touch Keyboard, double tap the Start Touch
Keyboard button on the Desktop, or perform the new JAWS
gesture, four-finger swipe down then up. JAWS announces
"opened Touch Keyboard" and plays an ascending sound. Once
enabled, the keyboard is positioned in the bottom part of
the screen and each key is represented by a button. Use
flick gestures to move to each key, or drag your finger
around the screen to explore and locate keys. While
exploring, JAWS plays a unique set of sounds to alert you
when you enter or leave the area of the screen containing
the touch keyboard. Once you become familiar with the touch
keyboard layout, you can tap at the location of each key. To
close the touch keyboard, perform another four-finger swipe
down then up. JAWS announces "closed touch keyboard" and
plays a descending sound.

JAWS offers two different modes for typing characters:

* Standard Typing: A key is typed when a double tap or
split tap is performed on the screen after exploring to any
of the keyboard buttons. If alternative characters are
available for the current keyboard button, a triple tap will
open a panel of alternative keys related to the selected
key. Performing a triple tap on any keyboard button in the
alternative characters panel will close the panel. Standard
Typing is the default mode.
* Touch Typing: A key is typed when the finger is
lifted from any of the keyboard buttons, or a split tap is
performed on the selected keyboard button. If alternative
characters are available for the current keyboard button, a
split double tap will open a panel of alternative keys
related to the selected key. Performing a split double tap
on any keyboard button in the alternative characters panel
will close the panel.

Use the new Touch Keyboard settings group located in the
main Keyboard group in Settings center to change the typing
mode as well as choose whether JAWS announces characters,
words, both characters and words, or is silent as you type
using the touch keyboard. You can also change how you are
notified when the touch keyboard or the panel of alternate
characters opens and closes.

Note: Changing the feedback for the touch keyboard is

I put my answers below Alan.
Eric

1. How much sighted assistance is required in setting it up out
of the box?
** It can be done without help but does require some time. You really
should get a short cable that does Mini USB (that connect to the
Venue) to USB Female so you can move files on from a USB drive to
install JAWS that way rather than having to download in the beginning.

2. How do you actually get JAWS on it? With a regular computer
one can insert the CD and you are good to go. I'm sure tablets do not
have a CD. Possibly put a copy of the exe file for JAWS on a flash
drive to install?
** I move files on and off the device with the USB drive connected as
I mentioned above.

3. With Window's 8.1 can narrator give you enough to get JAWS up

** Yes, this is what I suggest to get you started. Use Narrator to set
up a Blue Tooth Keyboard so you can then have been access to JAWS to
get the installation done and start setting up the Tablet. On the
Venue, you can toggle Narrator on and off, but pressing the Windows
Key (small button on the top of the unit on the right side) and while
you press that, you press the up Volume button, second button down on
the right edge. (the top button on the right edge is the power button,
this is just below the mini USB port).

Listened to Eric Jonathon on FS cast regarding how affordable
tablets are becoming. I liked the sounds of the Dell Venue Eric was
describing. My question to Eric or anyone else on list that has one
is:

1. How much sighted assistance is required in setting it up out
of the box?

2. How do you actually get JAWS on it? With a regular computer
one can insert the CD and you are good to go. I'm sure tablets do not
have a CD. Possibly put a copy of the exe file for JAWS on a flash
drive to install?

3. With Window's 8.1 can narrator give you enough to get JAWS up
and running.

Hopefully some answers here on list or feel free to contact me off

Eric or anyone else on list,

Great, thanks these ideas got me headed in right direction. I did pick
up the Logitech K810 keyboard to use with it.. One question in
installing JAWS with narrator. Is there a quick way to get to the
flash drive I've connected with a full version of JAWS 15 on it? This
is Windows 8.1 and wow, how different from Windows 7 with that search
box that pops up with the windows key. It is also going to take some
getting used to with a keyboard without the number keypad and the page
up, down button etc.

Best,
Al

1. How much sighted assistance is required in setting it up out

Hello, let me try and answer some your questions.
As far as installing The software, it is done like any other machine that does
not have a CD drive. So, what you want to do is you want to download the
software from the website.as far as activating merrier, I cannot help you here,
as I do not have a touchscreen device. However, when I can tell you is that I'm
sure that there are custom jesters to do this.once narrator is running though,
it does support full touchscreen access.in my opinion, much much better than
previous Versions of narrator with Internet explorer.there are, however, custom
gestures implemented to help you navigate explore with touchscreen. Sorry that
I could not be more helpful in the situation. I hope this at least helps the
little.

operating systems. Jaws only works with Windows. Now it would be
interesting if FS came out with a Jaws for Android.

However, there are free apps to handle that in Android to my understanding.
It also depends on what version of Android the tablet is running.

I was looking at my granddaughter's Samsung Galaxy tablet yesterday which
had a bluetooth keyboard in it's case and it got me wondering if any of the
tablets sold today would work with JAWS 14. Hers is an Android system and I
don't know if that comes with screen reading software or not.

does anyone have experience with any of the tablets available and if so,
what can you tell me or advise?

Re: [JAWS-Users] tablets

2013-04-16 Thread Eric Damery
Reese,

Just to give some additional opinion when considering these Tablet options. The
Samsung I bought had a decent keyboard, and the tablet can detach from the
keyboard completely. I would not recommend it for a couple of reasons. First,
the balance of it when using it as a laptop is not good. Since all the
electronics are behind the screen, and the screen is a touch device, it is very
heavy compared to the keyboard itself. Secondly, in order to use it as a
tablet, you really need to disconnect it from the keyboard and I then find
myself trying to go get my keyboard later since typing on these tablet devices
is not very comfortable for me, as a sighted user. So I like the tablet to
consume information, but if I have to produce, I find myself wanting the
keyboard back.

The other computer I bought last year was my Toshiba Ultra book. It is less
weight than the tablet, has a great keyboard, and is balanced perfectly for
using it on a desk or my lap. Hands down, I like my ultra book with Win 7 or
win 8 over the tablets I've been able to try so far.

Regards,
Eric

addition. In the first quarter this year, all I saw was Win 8 Pro on these
devices but Microsoft said there would be Win 8 Home editions shipping after
the first quarter from what I recall.

Regards,
Eric

I have the standard jaws not the pro, will this type work and should I wait
until jaws 15 comes out before searching for a tablet?

Well, I stand corrected and glad to hear that the future is more immediate than

I have a Samsung Tablet PC which includes a keyboard and use JAWS 14 on it.
You can also use JAWS 14 on a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet with the keyboard.
And with JAWS 15, there will be other exciting new options for use with these
tablets. Stay tuned.

Those ultra books are nice little deals being solid state with no moving
parts certainly makes them light and probably easy on batteries.

Not completely out of my price range but they aren't cheep by any means.

Reese,

Just to give some additional opinion when considering these Tablet options.
The Samsung I bought had a decent keyboard, and the tablet can detach from
the keyboard completely. I would not recommend it for a couple of reasons.
First, the balance of it when using it as a laptop is not good. Since all
the electronics are behind the screen, and the screen is a touch device, it
is very heavy compared to the keyboard itself. Secondly, in order to use it
as a tablet, you really need to disconnect it from the keyboard and I then
find myself trying to go get my keyboard later since typing on these tablet
devices is not very comfortable for me, as a sighted user. So I like the
tablet to consume information, but if I have to produce, I find myself
wanting the keyboard back.

Regards,
Eric
