Thanks, Fernando. Even though you say you can't help on this aspect, actually
you did. That control-k feature is new to me and useful.

Hi Adrian,

The bad thing here is that this problem is not caused by Firefox, but by JAWS.
This is exactly the same issue that happens when you press CTRL+SHIFT+P to open
a Private Browsing window in Firefox. This bug is not present when you use
Firefox with NVDA.

Regarding information shown in the new tab page, I can't help on this, because
I mostly go to web things I want by using auto-completion in the address bar,
the Jump List of the browser pinned to the taskbar, bookmarks or search queries
entered either in the box focusable by pressing CTRL+K (it is convenient
because it allows to change the search engine on the fly) or in Google's home
page, not the Firefox one that, as you say, has many things I'm not interested
in.

Thank you, Fernando, for recognizing the problem I was trying to describe in my
two recent posts, after I'd done a poor job with the first.

As you suggest, a shift-tab followed by tab brings focus to the URL edit line.
Turning off the virtual cursor does the same thing. Either one is an extra step
compared to IE11, but a minor inconvenience.

That said, I wonder if the new tab screen can be simplified. I don't see how to
delete some of the information presented there. Yes, I could delete some of the
websites Firefox has picked up from previous searches, but it's useful to type
in just the first few letters when I want them. However, why Firefox feels
compelled to list them when IE11 doesn't is beyond me.

Before I get to the list of websites on this screen, I'm confronted with a slew
of useless verbiage that I'd love to remove. I'll close this post with a copy
of that part of the screen:

Hi Adrian,

After pressing CTRL+T to open a new tab, press INSERT+A (INSERT even on laptop
keyboard layout) to check the address bar. If it reads about:newtab, it is
likely that JAWS turned virtual cursor on even when focus is on the address
bar, so press SHIFT+TAB and then TAB again to see if focus is properly set to
the address bar.
If the address bar have another URL, a program on your computer changed Firefox
(and probably other browsers as well) settings such as new tab URL, home page
and default search engine to show you ads. In this case, you should delete any
unwanted toolbar or other extensions and then reset these Firefox settings.

Hope it helps!

That's how the new tab function works with IE11. However, it's confusing with
Firefox. With Firefox, I'll start entering the URL, only for focus to start
skipping around. Do others have this experience? Any suggestions?

I'm not much help here as I don't open new Firefox tabs.  I find that
many of the sites I use work better with IE11 than Firefox.  My Fidelity
Institutional site does not work at all with the current (ESL)Firefox
version. I have Firefox as my default browser, mainly because I really
like the alt/control/R function reader, which strips out extraneous
information and often noxious audio inserts from articles I want to read.
