Well, it depends, of course, on what you have on your computer. There are
any number of possibilities.

The keyboard command is windows key + the letter r. That opens the "run"
dialogue box, which you can also get to from a few different windows menus.
>From there you can open a drive on your PC or a network location, run a
programme, open a web location or local folder, etc. Very handy. If you want
to run a programme, all you need is the name of its executable. To stay on
topic, for JAWS it is "jaws" followed by your version number. If you want
Firefox, you would type "firefox". "iexplore" for internet Explorer,
"winword" for Microsoft Word, "powershell" for Windows Power Shell, and so
on. If you want to go somewhere on the web, just type in the full address
and it will open in your default browser.

Mike, I agree with you about pinning to the taskbar. But for me, there are
so many ways of loading JAWS. To add to those in this thread, you can also
press Windows key-m (or presumably Windows key-d) to put focus on the

press j to take you to the first version of JAWS that appears on the desktop

Jaws version from the site and install it it will get rid of the hotkey and
you will have to put it back in again.

Hi Miriam,
When you install a new version of Jaws you will have to put the hotkey back
in again. So for example when Jaws 19 comes out you will have to put the
hotkey back in again. Just remember that. Also if you go to the Jaws
website and get a complete version of Jaws with an update and install it you
will have to reinstall the hotkey for Jaws.

Hi Miriam,
Do you have the shortcut setup for your Jaws? Here are the steps to do that.
1. Press windows + M to go to your desktop.
2. Press the letter J until you hear Jaws 18.
3. Press the application key and arrow up one time and press enter on
properties.
4. Tab two times and you should hear short cut key. If it says none then
press the letter J
If it says shortcut key ctrl+alt+J then just press the escape key.
6. Now tab until you hear ok, then press enter. Another dialog box may come
up just press yes or continue then you should be done.

Now you should have a shortcut key so when you press ctrl+alt+J it should
start Jaws. Now if you use the other hotkey that now should work.

1. Press windows + M to go to your desktop.

3. Press the application key and arrow up one time and press enter on

If it says shortcut key ctrl+alt+J then just press the escape key.

Now you should have a shortcut key so when you press ctrl+alt+J it should
start Jaws. Now if you use the other hotkey that now should work.

down to press Jaws key plus windows key plus F4 and this turns off Jaws. And
if I press these keys again, they act as a toggle. Am I supposed to press
them simultaneously? When I press them the first time, I can see with my
hugely magnified Magic that the screen changes. But I haven't gotten Jaws to
restart with those keys or with any others. I am having to resort to turning
the computer off with the button and then turning it on again. Even though I
can see that I've moved to the screen that says, "Shut Down", the key
strokes don't work. But, after I press the button, just before the screen
changes, Jaws says something, but then the computer shuts down. I have a 64
bit windows 7 computer. I'd sell my soul for a key stroke that would just
get Jaws working again without having to shut down the computer and wait for
it to start and load.

Lots of useful ideas.
Someone else wrote off-list with the same idea, Patti, and it makes sense.
Mike, I agree with you about pinning to the taskbar. But for me, there are so
many ways of loading JAWS. To add to those in this thread, you can also press
Windows key-m (or presumably Windows key-d) to put focus on the desktop. Press
control-home to take you to the beginning of the list. then press j to take you
to the first version of JAWS that appears on the desktop or a second or third
time for the version you want, then press enter. It takes longer to explain
than do.

I agree with Adrian. I've found that I have to manually remove the shortcut
from the previous JAWS version before I can put it in for the latest version
installed. For me this is not a big deal as again, I have the same practice as
Adrian. I usually have the current version, and the 2 previous versions

Control+Alt+L, the version prior to the current version to

hotkey from the previous version of JAWS, assuming you keep it on the system.
Someone posted a while ago that creating a shortcut for a new version of JAWS
makes the shortcut go away in the earlier one, but that was never my
experience. Sometimes I'll assign a hotkey to each version of JAWS on my
system, such as control-alt-j for the current version, control-alt-k for the
preceding one, etc. But you can see the problem. The logical shortcut would be
control-alt-I, since I precedes j in the alphabet, but I've already assigned
control-alt-I to Internet Explorer.
In any event, be sure to remove an the shortcut from an old version of JAWS
before assigning that shortcut to the new version.

Hi Miriam,
When you install a new version of Jaws you will have to put the hotkey back

2017-08-05 Thread Annette Carr
I agree with Adrian. I've found that I have to manually remove the shortcut
from the previous JAWS version before I can put it in for the latest version
installed. For me this is not a big deal as again, I have the same practice
as Adrian. I usually have the current version, and the 2 previous versions
installed on my machine. So I go in and first change the oldest version to
Control+Alt+L, the version prior to the current version to Control+Alt+k,
and set the current version to Control+Alt+j.

In addition, at least in my past experience, you first need to remove that
hotkey from the previous version of JAWS, assuming you keep it on the
system. Someone posted a while ago that creating a shortcut for a new
version of JAWS makes the shortcut go away in the earlier one, but that was
never my experience. Sometimes I'll assign a hotkey to each version of JAWS
on my system, such as control-alt-j for the current version, control-alt-k
for the preceding one, etc. But you can see the problem. The logical
shortcut would be control-alt-I, since I precedes j in the alphabet, but

Hi Adrian & List Members,

Pinning Jaws versions to the Taskbar will stop your shortcut keystrokes from
disappearing, & you never have to update the keystroke when updating with a
new build. For example, I have various items pinned to the Taskbar, but
when I get to the 6th spot through the 8th spots on the Taskbar, these are
J16, J17, & J18. When I press the Windows key + the 6 key, on the number
row, this starts J16, pressing Windows key + 7, starts J17, & pressing
Windows key + 8, starts J18. Obviously I have IE, Notepad, & other items
ahead & behind the Jaws items, but that's where each individual has to
choose how they would like their Taskbar layed out. You can only pin 10
items to the Taskbar.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

In addition, at least in my past experience, you first need to remove that
hotkey from the previous version of JAWS, assuming you keep it on the system.

Hi Miriam,
When you install a new version of Jaws you will have to put the hotkey back in
again. So for example when Jaws 19 comes out you will have to put the hotkey
back in again. Just remember that. Also if you go to the Jaws website and get
a complete version of Jaws with an update and install it you will have to
reinstall the hotkey for Jaws.

Hi Miriam,
Do you have the shortcut setup for your Jaws? Here are the steps to do that.
1. Press windows + M to go to your desktop.
2. Press the letter J until you hear Jaws 18.
3. Press the application key and arrow up one time and press enter on
properties.
4. Tab two times and you should hear short cut key. If it says none then press
the letter J
If it says shortcut key ctrl+alt+J then just press the escape key.
6. Now tab until you hear ok, then press enter. Another dialog box may come
up just press yes or continue then you should be done.

Now you should have a shortcut key so when you press ctrl+alt+J it should start
Jaws. Now if you use the other hotkey that now should work.

Please tell me again, in detail, what to do when Jaws 18 disappears. I wrote
down to press Jaws key plus windows key plus F4 and this turns off Jaws. And
if I press these keys again, they act as a toggle.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Re-starting Jaws 18

2017-08-04 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Miriam,
Do you have the shortcut setup for your Jaws? Here are the steps to do that.
1. Press windows + M to go to your desktop.
2. Press the letter J until you hear Jaws 18.
3. Press the application key and arrow up one time and press enter on
properties.
4. Tab two times and you should hear short cut key. If it says none then
press the letter J
If it says shortcut key ctrl+alt+J then just press the escape key.
6. Now tab until you hear ok, then press enter. Another dialog box may come
up just press yes or continue then you should be done.

Now you should have a shortcut key so when you press ctrl+alt+J it should
start Jaws. Now if you use the other hotkey that now should work.

get Jaws working again without having to shut down the computer and wait for
it to start and load.

I do not get anything like that, JAWS just re-starts. I have JAWS 17, is
that the difference?

I don't waste my time or effort with that crazy and acrobatic dump JAWS
key combo. I have simply pinned JAWS to my taskbar as the second item
there and simply press windows key plus number 2 on the numbers row to
reopen JAWS after a crash. Quick and easy.
