 Hi all

In the Netherlands we have to do a noise test. This year I have to do
itcost will be 600 euro. And if you are to loud with your plane you have to
do it again...and pay again..grgrgrgr. A few guys from the air field told me
that our plane is making a bit more noise than normal. So I need to design an
muffler. I have surged on the internet but there is a lot information. I think
to make a turbo muffler (strange name) so I have to design something.

My easiest fix is to install my catilisator again. Before the first flight I
removed it to save some weight an this cat gives Also a lot backpressure. On
the end off the system I have the original BMW muffler (absorber). My idea is
to design a turbo muffler instead of the catalisator.

Is there someone in our KR family who can help me to design something?

The engine sound is 6500 rpm sound.

The lenght I can easily use is 12/ 13 inch. If I go longer I think I have to
install the Muffler outside the cowling. That is not what I want.

http://www.masttotaalconcept.nl/kr2/styled-27/index.html

The link above you will see at 3/4 from the top my exhaust system ( at this
moment the cat is not there and it is only a tube). The last muffler is the
original BMW type.

Hope someone off you have some tips for me.

Re: KR> Engine mount

2019-01-14 Thread CHRIS GARDNER via KRnet
Leif,Pressure relief holes are not needed in your engine mount unless you plan
on having it “normalized” after welding to relieve stresses.I wanted to do that
after TIG welding but forgot to vent each tube beforehand. The temperatures used
to normalize or stress relieve the mount would cause them to burst if not
vented.Anyway no issues with cracks in spite of omitting that process.Your
decision.CheersChris Gardiner

My KR2S has flaps as per plans ,which factors into the calculation for

Re: KR> aileron balancing

2017-12-15 Thread CHRIS GARDNER via KRnet
Jeb,
I cast my lead weights using an empty tin can that was approx. the right shape
( Tin of hereford corned beef , as I recall) . It was a rectangle with rounded
corners that seemed the right shape.
The lead was heated in a cast iron skillet frypan , outdoors,  on my camp stove
( Propane or Naptha type) on a warm summer day. These are cheap skillets for a
couple of bucks.
Carefully pour the molten lead into the can on a concrete floor . After it
cools , cut away the can and drill and carve the lead block down to the
finished weight needed. Dispose of the skillet never to be used again.

To whom it may concern;

I calculated the size/weight needed then made a mold using plaster paris of
that calculation.

I heated the mold in the oven to prevent steam explosions prior to pouring the
liquified lead into the mold.

Once the mold was heated to 450 degrees I poured the melted lead (using proper
face shield, gloves, and full body heavy clothing to cover all exposed skin
surfaces) into the mold and let cool.  I then shaved the lead weights using a
sure file to get the weight to the exact amount needed to counter the aileron
and perfectly balance it.

Be very careful when pouring molten lead into plaster molds that the mold has
been sufficiently heated so that all water is gone or it WILL EXPODE in your
face throwing molten lead in all directions !

Another alternative is to use heavy paper/cardboard to form a square mold to
pour the molten lead into, the sides can be taped together using ordinary
masking tape, several layers, without the tape burning through until the lead
solidifies.  I have used both types of molds.

Hope this is of some help

Re: KR> Fuel header tank

2017-01-16 Thread CHRIS GARDNER via KRnet
Deon,
CG shift with the header tank is a non -issue. I have a 12 US Gal. header tank
from RR in my KR2S and the change in trim from full to almost empty is only a
couple of bars on the trim indicator .
Aluminum is probably superior in chemical resistance from auto fuels and less
likely to leak than fibreglass. I would keep it . Not sure there is any safety
issue with it? Lets face it , sitting behind 12 gals of gas in a wood airplane
is inherently dangerous to begin with . Don't lose any sleep over it.

I have had good success using the speedometer cable style adjustment on my

With 238 hours to date, I have not had any issues with this method.

Looks a little unconventional but works fine.

KR> Rudder pedals

2014-05-16 Thread Chris Gardner via KRnet
Phil.
I would definitely recommend going up a few sizes on wall thickness (.058) on
the rudder tubes as I bent them twice trying to stop on a short runway.
The right hand one is really the culprit not so much the left one due to the
torque you can apply when the adrenaline starts flowing and the end of the
runway is near.
I actually ended up re-enforcing the lower corners with an internal tube to
strengthen the weld and torque points to stop it from bending.
The rudder pedals were one of the surprising things that I did not expect to
have any problems with yet it was an ongoing issue until the third set were
made as above.
Contact me directly if you need more details.
