On your 172 unless someone wired it wrong the 1 wire coming off the solinoid

Every system has its plus and minus compared to any other system.  In my
case I run a fuel pressure regulator that precludes high fuel pressure
and turning off both ignition systems would cause such an immediate
effect that I doubt if your fingers would leave the switch before
turning it back on.  An exhaust backfire might not be too kind on your
exhaust pipes. We used to do that with the old pickup truck growing up
on the farm. Turn off the ignition, coast down the road, turn the
ignition back on for a backfire that sent the wildlife running.  Back
then turning off the ignition didn't lock up the steering wheel.  We
each go with what makes us comfortable and hope for the best.

Re: KR> BRS chute

2020-04-03 Thread Randy Smith via KRnet
If you look at a Cirrus it is totaled when you pull the chute. They bury all
the lines under the glass. I had 5 engine out ( Actually 1 was prop and flange
left the plane) 3 over Missouri 1 in the Florida panhandle and 1 at home in
lake Dallas. Every time I either landed on a runway or a pasture. I pushed the
nose over to just above stall speed and road it to the ground. Every time the
plane came home in 1 piece and I had it flying within a month. 3 off those
where VW engines and 1 Was an lyc 85 hp. My last engine was a rebuilt 0-200.
One thing i can say and I will bet Mark agrees that when that prop stops it is
nothing like pulling the power back to practice.

I think most KR folks would answer "too heavy, too expensive, and I'd
rather glide it to the ground".  Having done more than my share of
dead-stick landings in a KR, I can tell you that it normally works out
pretty wellat least you are in control of the plane.  When you pull
the handle on a chute, you have no idea where or what you will land on,
and your plane will probably die in the process.  If you fly it all the
way to the ground, chances are good that you can land on a runway, a
road, or a field, and the plane lives to fly another day.  Structural
failures are almost unheard of in KRs.it's usually the engine.  Why
kill an airplane when it's the engine's fault?

Re: KR> Anti flutter

2020-04-03 Thread Randy Smith via KRnet
I can tell you with my KR2 with balanced elevators and an 0-200 that I was
able to achieve a very quick elevator flutter at 215 mph. I was at 5000 ft and
started to chase down a Mooney at 3000 ft and was not paying enough attention
to my airspeed. When it hit I pulled all the power of and pulled up and it
stopped. Lasted about 2 maybe 3 seconds. There were 3 planes chasing each other
and when it happened I told the other 2 I was headed for the nearest airport.
We spent an hour checking all we could in the back expecting to find some type
of cracking. we found nothing. That was a real dumb move. I don't know what
happened to my KR, I sold it and it went to Oklahoma and was never
re-registered.

Quick question.
I have a balanced elevator. And will balance ailerons. Just wondering if the
rudder really needs balancing.  Trying to save weight. So far this build is 64
lbs lighter than my first build at this stage.

Re: KR> Jim Morehead

2019-05-16 Thread Randy Smith via KRnet
more people dye in the care of a doctor than any other time.  I just had a
knee replaced and the doctor told me if I came in with a scratch on me they
would not operate. Before the surgery they looked me all over for any cuts. I
was told that any infection would go straight to the knee.  It is really to
late but I believe there is a lawsuit there.

 That's sad to hear.

I have a special empathy for Jim's passing since I had the pleasure to
staying with he and Rae at their beautiful home at Cameron Airpark.  The
pleasure too of taking his beautifully built KR-2 for it's first flights.
It was an excellent flyer and needed no tweaking, his work had been so
meticulous.

Jim and vivacious wife Rae were the picture of health when I met them.
Later, Jim let a doctor talk him into doing a knee replacement.  He was
physically of normal weight, probably 165.  He had normal movement and
had no complaints of any pain but perhaps he later developed a stiff
knee.  I've got some slight arthritic build-up in my thumb joints and
occasionally my right shoulder acts up a bit, especially with the
atypically wet and chilly winter we've had in San Diego - one which still
goes on.  As I write this it's in the 50's and raining . . . middle of
May!  I think stiff joints happen to all of us as we age and some of us
with good insurance may be too quick to take advantage of the unholy
alliance between insurance and the medical industry.  Jim was one of
those.  I found and find it hard to believe the healthy person I met
needed a knee replacement but not long after I met him he went in for the
knee replacement and that was his undoing, and that of Rae as well.  When
I saw them at the McMinnville Gathering they both seemed to have aged
thirty years and their lives had been ruined.  Perhaps Rae had suffered
even more than Jim since following the initial disaster of having the
operation it had fallen on her to tend to everything, having to
physically do for Jim everything that he couldn't do for himself.

In some cases doctors can be of value but in many cases they do far more
harm than good.  Same for dentistry.  Those who adhere religiously to the
"standard of care" promoted by the AMA and ADA are consciously or
unconsciously participating in what is in many cases simply a money
extraction system.  They frequently do not have their patients' best
interest at heart.  In Jim's case, he had a slight infection on his arm
from some yardwork scratch yet the surgeon, simply to avoid adjusting his
schedule, proceded with the surgery anyway.  Jim and Rae "knew" it would
have been prudent to wait until his arm infection had healed before
exposing his body's immune system to the stress of a knee operation, but
the surgeon's wish to not alter his schedule prevailed in their decision
and their lives, Jim and Rae's, turned into a horror that can only be
imagined.

We can learn from what happened to Jim and Rae.  What I suggest we learn,
for those who might be tempted to blindly trust the medical/dental
cartels, is to have more confidence in the innate wisdom of our own good
sense supplemented with carefully sifted information available through
mankind's most recent technological miracle - the internet.  Blind
belief in anything, especially industrial medicine, can be deadly.
Doctors can sometimes work miracles . . . emphasis is on the word
"sometimes".  In Jim's and Rae's case, they wrought disaster.

You really do not want to over insure. I will give an example. My neighbor
built an RV7 and insured it for $126000. after her 6 attempt at landing WITH
the wind she flipped it over on its back.  She told the insurance company she
did not want it fixed, They told here it would cost $4 to fix it. She sued
and lost to the insurance company, it paid to fix it. She bought an RV10 and
when they finished here 7 she sold it. It only sold for $78000 which was the
value of the plane. The ins. company pays on insured value not book value. A
friend wrecked to planes and the ins. company paid both without to many
question but now he fly's with only liability because that is all he can get.
You will fined That if you wreck a plane and ins. pays it off most company will
tell you they will not insure you, you will need to go back to the 1 that paid
the claim. They will sometimes insure you again only because they would like to
get some off there money back.

Ask your underwriter what they will pay if the aircraft is
"totaled".  I read years ago that they pay based on aircraft value,
not on the insured amount.  Given that, I don't recall ever seeing a
KR sell for $17,000, even the very nice ones with 0-200 engines.  A
nice KR with a VW engine, if you can find a buyer, is probably in the
$10,000 to $12,000 range.  You may be over insuring and paying more
than necessary.  I insure for liability only for $325 per year, given
my commercial license, 1500+ total time, and 600+ tail wheel time.

Given my age, 72, and the 13 years I took to build my KR, if I total
mine I could have another one flying by age 85.  :-)  Live to you

Re: KR> Sterba prop

2017-02-13 Thread Randy Smith via KRnet
You can't move the prop on a Mooney. I know that any of the O-320 and O-360
series engines the props can only go 2 ways. The prop is pined. The reason is
the prop is set up for compression stroke on #1 cylinder. Every High horse
powered engine I have owned the prop will only go 2 ways.

My prop is at 3 and 9 on the Lancair which makes it a little harder to hand
prop.  I talked to  a guy at Hartzell who said that props were put at 2 an 8
back when most planes didn't have electric starters so they would be easier to
start.  I also talked with an RV owner who also said he did the same as me.  I
also did my KR but didn't see much difference.  The VW is a very smooth engine
anyway.  I left the Mooney at the factory setting which, is not a good location
for a smooth engine.

I meant to ask how that lined up the prop for hand propping. Did it
put a blade in the 10 o'clock or 2 o'clock position to pull down?

Re: KR> In-flight Fire

2017-01-29 Thread Randy Smith via KRnet
Tripacer has fuel in wings.  That was an electrical fire. 95% of in flight
fires are not survivable whether fuel is in the header or wing. I carry a small
hellion fire extinguisher up front. I had a DME smoke a couple of weeks ago and
my wife had the fire extinguisher out before I realized it. She pulled the pin
before I stopped her.

That hits close to home having put 500 hours on the old TriPacer I
had and reaffirms my decision to eliminate a header tank and put all
fuel in the outboard wing tanks.

I wish your friend a speedy recovery.

Re: KR> 4-into-1 exhaust system help?

2017-01-28 Thread Randy Smith via KRnet
When it was time for my exhaust on the KR I Talked to a local muffler shop and
then loaded it up on a trailer and took it to them.  He said he would be glade
to do it because it was something different. It only cost me $350 and
everything fit. It was not stainless and I did have it wrapped and it lasted
quit a long time.

I gave up trying to find an exhaust system that even vaguely resembles
what I have on N891JF.  I'm going to have to build another one that
replicates it, unless I want to remove the engine, completely
reconfigure the firewall and intake system, etc.  Building a new system,
as painful as that sounds, is easier than the alternative.

I was going to build it out of 321 stainless until I checked the prices.
  A 321 U-bend is $94, a 304 U-bend is $40, and a mild steel U-bend is
$10.  I need 8 U-bends (four are actually J-bends, but same price), just
to think about getting started, we're talking $800, not to mention
collector, tailpipe, flanges, etc, if built from 321 stainless.  The
existing one made it to 600 hours and was mild steel.  I'll have N56ML
back in the air before I put another 600 hours on this one!

By contrast, my Corvair system was almost reasonable built from 321,
because it is built so simply using only three U-bends for six
cylinders.  But it's not a complex 6-into-1 system either, just a pair
of simple 3-into-1 pipes.

I have everything I need to start on it, and that's what I'm doing all
weekend, and probably next weekend as well.  I built two mockup engines,
one with the old exhaust to measure distances and angles from, and the
other as the fixture to build the new system onto. We'll see how it goes.

One thing I learned along the way is that Great Plains has no exhaust
systems built, but they do have fixtures, so they are "to order" with a
30 day lead time.  The configurations are shown on their website at
http://greatplainsas.com/scexhaust.html , none of which are similar to
mine.  Also, gauge size is not mentioned on their website, but they are
18g (.049"), rather than the 16g (.065")like the original exhaust
system, so I had to get all materials elsewhere.  I did buy flanges from
them, but am not enamored with them as the mounting holes are huge
compared to the 8mm studs, so I'll have to carefully center the flanges
to the ports before I start welding tubes to them.
