Glenn, I don't know what time you will be coming in but this is a unicom
airport.  The FBO closes at 5PM and monitors 122.8 with a continuous AWOS
119.625.  Another local AWOS is at DVK 128.325.  Fly safe and if you don't get
a reply, fly the pattern as published (right hand traffic) as you do at any
unicom airport.  After you land, you land you will see this is not a large
airport..you won't have any problem finding us.  Any non KR's use the main the
ramp tiedowns.

All KR's, after you landtaxi to the two large hangars to the right as you
come off the taxiways. I have some things to do in the office...clients still
want their payrolls done even during the KR Gathering...so I won't be at the
airport until noonish.

OK gang enough is enough.I was at the airport today going over the final
details of the gathering. The manager of the FBO and I walked the grounds to
finalize the camping arrangements, the availability of tables & chairs, hangar
access, vehicle access, food, snacks. fuel, tiedowns, bathrooms and the entire
list of things we have been going over the last couple of months. The local
EAA is a group of people of for the most part, no long pilots and like to get
together to talk about the golden days of flyingas in why in the world to
we need radios.I actually did not provide them with info for a reason, oh
well!! The place knows about the gathering, I can't help the EAA doesn't or
some line boy who works 1 day every three weeks doesn't know about the

Come on guys, we are only nine (9) days away from the Gathering and the weather

2008-10-12 Thread Dan Heath
What do you expect? Schedule a Gathering during the month that typically
has the worst weather across the nation, that we get all year, and I guess
you should expect bad weather. Here is a good question for you. How do you
know the month when there are the most hurricanes? Answer, the month that
they have the KR Gathering. I and several others have been trying to
convince the "powers that be", for several years, to change the time of the
gathering. I understand that the month of October, offers the best chance
for good weather across the nation, but I don't care when it is, September

I am game for changing the date to a different month. I would actually
like to see it during the months when the kids are not in school so that
more folks could come as a family and maybe work it in as part of their
vacation. This is a topic which needs to be addressed at the banquet
while we have everyone together for a show of hands. Or, we could make a
suggestion box for folks to put their comments in and that way they
could do it anonymously if they wish. Larry Flesner can you get with
Chris and have him set up a suggestion box. I think this would be a good
way to get ideas on future Gatherings.

A KR will not carry the whole family, unless the pilot and spouse are the
whole family. With the limited seating in a KR, a spouse may not want to drive
with kids to the function while pilot flys the KR. If not then the number of KR
aircraft may be limited and then it would be a drive in instead of a flyin.
Might be better to hold the flyin as is, change date if needed, hold a second
family KR get together and those who can fly can and those who need to drive
the family can do so.
The selfish bottom line may be best to hold during school because of limited
seating in KR aircraft. That way a pilot will not have to feel guilty about
leaving spouse and kids behind.
Notice how I was politically correct in saying spouse ? LOL

September is much nicer than any summer month. October may
be even better but you start having the chance of cold fronts. When
planning a flight to Key West I found a link that shows lightning
activity in Florida. Since that should correlate to thunderstorms and
weather I will avoid it provides a quick glance as to better weather.

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tbw/information/ltg/ltg2.gif

and

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tbw/information/ltg/ltg3.gif

September shows a reduction from the highs of June/July and October
is even better. Another useful link to get a birds eye view of rain is here:

http://adds.aviationweather.gov/radar/

Even this morning there is some on the mid south probably associated
with a cold front passage but it is much less than I have seen in summer
months.

http://adds.aviationweather.gov/radar/

September and October are the two highest hurricane months but personally
I would not try to plan around them. If one happens such is life...unless you
have the gathering in Florida!

Something to consider if you are planning a date change or permanent
location. This may require a change from your typical banquet decision to
one that polls the wider KR community. Perhaps it is all KR-netters or
all Gathering attendees for the last 10 years or so.

Regardless, weather will always be a factor. I am a VFR pilot and I stick
to my limitations. You won't find me trying to penetrate a thunderstorm.

Kinda sounds alittle unfair that the voting for where/when to have the
Gathering should only be done by the attendees. Others who could possibly
attend at another location or time of year would not be represented at all.
I personally am not held back, due to an instrument rating, and lots of
experience but several have mentioned that they are VFR only pilots, which
does effect them.

With the possible exceptions to Oshkosh and maybe Sun n' Fun, I personally
think it is senseless to try and schedule the Gathering around such events.
Many KR pilots have expressed that they will not fly their KR's to these
events anyway, and normally don't even attend every year.

My suggestion is to pick a month in the future; anounce when it will be.
Have anyone who would like to host the Gathering, either build a web page to
illustrate your offer, or load a page with pictures and explanation to do
the same. If the individual cannot do that, then they probably cannot
handle the workload of a successful Gathering. Then just like the Memorial,
have a voting with a cut off date. A tie gets a runoff, or voting only by
say last 5 years attendees to decide between the last two places. If the
other person and location still want to sponsor something, then have a KR
flyin as a warm up to The Gathering. This can all be decided after the
present Gathering is over. Let this one happen with full enthusiasm. But I
do think that voting on the Gathering location at the banquet is not
representative of the KR community at large

with Colin in that as a non IFR pilot in a pretty well equipted KR with 20
plus years of flying my KR, I had to deal with the worst conditions on both
occasions. Those who remember Barkley 2000 know that all the drivers went
home on sunday and the flyers had to stay for 3 extra days to get out of the
valley. Last year was even more exciting flying through haze soo bad I had
to use all my limited IFR training. It did not help that on the way home my
engine quit in that same haze and thank god for the gps, which showed me my
nearest was only 7 miles dead ahead.

I second the recommendation that all recent attendies be allowed to vote on

WEATHER.

I can remember flying in MI during my lessons and for a couple of years after
gettnig my license. I just forgot what weather or bad weather was like.
Oshkosh has always been wet, I think I can only remember 1 or 2 years with no
rain. Arizona on the other hand, well lets just say we are spoiled. Yes it is
hot for 3 months and right now we have the monsoons going on. Big clouds and
rain at the end of everyday. Some days was have bad winds, direct cross winds.
My trip to Oshkosh was a reminder and an eye opener for me. Richard and I
went through a couple of good rain cells with lighting. It is amazing how fast
I could turn that plane when you see lighting right in front of you. While at
Oshkosh the KR pilots best friend is a non-super sticky tape. Sorry about you
paint Mark J. and Richard S. I will be looking into having a cover made to
not only keep out the sun but WATER. I was stuck in Osh for an extra day due
to weather, and on my return flight I ran into a wall of 25 mph wind.
McPherson KS 25mph wind down the runway. Dalhart TX 25 mph with gusts over 30.
The morning was mush better with only 20mph. I flew with a 172 from Mesa AZ
from there, we headed to Double Eagle NM, fighting a 35pmh head wind@ 8500 ft.
Just before Las Vegas NM the clouds showed up, the winds were gone but the
ceilings were low. We were going to set down in Las Vegas and wait, but the
172 would not be able to T/O with the density alt. I landed and had to repair
a hatch on my canopy, they were going to fly low the Double Eagle. I took off
andf flew above the broken clouds and went over D/E and header to St Johns AZ.
40 miles from the AZ border CLOUDS low and solid, so I went north to Grants.
My fuel pump went out on my transfer pump. 20 mins later after a trip to
Checker, Auto Zone and Napa. No pump. So it was going to be shorter trips from
here on out. The WEATHER looked ok to the west. A front was heading south and
it was clear in Winslow AZ. I went up to 12,500 to clear all of the broken
clouds and got to Winslow. Flagstaff looked real bad. I talked to a pilot
with a lot of time in the area and he said that I would be bumped around alot
but it was open to Payson AZ. I took off and headed to the south for Payson,
the clouds were not getting lower but the terrain was getting higher, I got
through a pass on the Rim and it opened up around Payson. I still had 3/4 of a
tank and I sould see down a canyon that ends up in Mesa. The clouds were about
2000ft agl and visibility was about 10-15 miles. Down the canyon I went. 40
minutes later, I was in Mesa and 10 minutes later my Home Airport.

In July of '71 flying back to SNA(now called John Wayne Int'l), after an
unsched. Stop in Columbia MO to secure a Carb Heat control that kept creeping
open, I was headed for Santa Fe via Pratt, Liberal, Dalhart & Las Vegas NM I
encountered one of those summer rains that you encountered. I Refueled in
Pratt and headed off IFR ( I Follow Roads- Hwy 54) toward Dalhart. As I
approached Boise City I observed a Squaw line in my way and called FSS and
informed me that they currently had a TS and advised that I divert south to the
Canadian River and plan on spending the night in Tuccumcari because of severe
weather west to the Sangre De Christo's south to the Mexican Border. The next
morning I departed TCC for SNA with a fuel stop in INW, 806 sm total. After
the refueling top @ INW I thought I was in big weather troubles again as I
approached Sedona because I was getting sandwiched between a broken cloud deck
and the impressive rim that is the east side of the Verde River
Valley on the way to PRC. but as soon as I broke over the rime the deck rapidly
dissipated and I was home free and was able to climb up to 10,500 for the leg
from PRC to the Colorado. I had 1500 ft between the rim & the clouds to scoot
through at the rim.

The total Clock time from TCC to SNA including the time on the ground for
refueling at INW was 8 hrs-15 min in a 172. Oh yea a rented 172-- $14/hr wet-
those days are gone forever.

I learned about the SW monsoons from that trip.

KR> weather forecast web site?

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Langford
NetHeads,

I'd be interested in good websites that show forecasts for weather across
the country (or at least the Eastern half) that show a sequence of where the
clouds and or rain are expected to be in 12, 24, 48 hours, etc. I've seen
one or two, but they're not very impressive, and was wondering if any of you
guys knew of anything better.

I sort of "finished" my primer job today, and managed to mount my fiberglass
spinner. You may recall that last week I installed my new high dollar
spinner and the thing vibrated at 1600 rpm. I removed it and the vibration
went away, so that would point directly to the spinner. So I did something
Troy Petteway told me he did years ago...use the "real" spinner as a mold to
make another one. It couldn't be more out of balance than this thing, so I
tried it. Today I installed it and there's no change that I can detect in
the usually smooth Corvair's vibration level at any rpm. I figure I have
about ten bucks in it, not counting the rather expensive "mold".

Trip planning tonight for a 7AM departure time to OSH...

KR> weather forecast web site?

2008-10-12 Thread D F Lively
Mark:

I use Intellicast and plug in MCI( Kansas City) for here in Burlington.
Thecoverage area on its Regional radar loop covers an area from the Red River
south of OK City north to MSP East to Western OH and west midway to Denver from
the Kansas border.

I would suggest perhaps plugging in Charlotte NC, Atlanta(ATL), Huntsville or
Nashville for your basic area and bookmark it. Then book mark any other areas
you might need for places you frequent. You probably will not need more than 4
or 5 to cover the area east of the Mississippi and all you need to is plug in
relevant 3-letter airport codes for amajor airport for closer in details.--All
things you likely have at the ready for a flight plan anyway.

Really as a lot of information accessible from a few sites

We had light rain here all day today---0.15 inches but up to an inch in Quad
Cities (MLI). But it is rapidly clearing. The system is headed SE and was the
2nd storm in 48 hours to do a number on St Louis. They have 500,000 folks
without power per the news. I would say the big question for you is how far SE
of (STL) it gets and how much of its punch it loses. The Regional Radar loop on
the Intellicast site of choice will show the last 2-1/2 hours of a systems
progress in 15 min or 30 min steps which should be a useful predictor of its
progress.

KR> Weather forecasts

2008-10-12 Thread JIM VANCE
Mark asked about sources of weather forecasts. I suggest you try
www.usaircom.net. You can access any weather station in the U. S. Click on
the AVIATION WEATHER button to the right, then fill in the blanks for the state
and city. It will give you a 72 hour forecast in four hour increments, with
wind, temps, cloud ceiling, percent chance of precip and thunderstorms, dew
point, etc. There's a bar at the bottom where you can access winds aloft.

It is geared to local flying, but I've found it to be the most accurate
forecasts of any of the sites.

Well we made it through another one although many Floridians were not so lucky
and did receive losses. Hurricane Frances has left many areas flooded and wind
damaged. It is very cloudy here, and the rain keeps coming and going.
Hurricane Ivan is reving up in the Ocean approaching Cuba and is following the
same path as Charley, so we may have another one before it is over. I don't
think making history this way is a good thing! I for one will have the KR
stored in the garage here at the house until Ivan decides what he is going to
do, then back to the airport. I will also continue to try to get the
inspection done, with the plane here or at the airport. Might need to add a
boat to the toys here soon! Seems to be more water than solid land right now.

One of the better weather site I've found and have been using
for some time is:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/

The top left corner of this page has a search box. Enter some
names of cities along your route and it will come up with
current weather as well as a seven day forcast along with
radar map and cloud cover maps.

They have special pages for different types of users and one
is a very good aviation section with notams, etc. Just do
a bit of surfing through the "aviation" area and see what you
like. Their pages usually load very quickly and I'm using
a 56K modem hookup. You can even run through the same
info as if you were talking to live briefer.

A real quick look would indicate a good weekend at Red Oak
and chance of showers looks small (20 to 30 percent) for
Mark and I to make the trip in the Tripacer. I hope everyone
that plans to fly has as good a forcast.

KR>weather reports

2008-10-12 Thread larry flesner

I think I gave you some bad info about notams being available
on the NOAA site under aviation. There is a hot link there
but it doesn't come up with what I was expecting. I'd suggest
you talk to a live wx briefer for any notams along you intended
route of flight and especially any airports you plan to stop at.
There is a lot of construction going on right now and several
airports in our area are closed including my home base.

Our EAA chapter did a flyout a few weeks back for lunch.
They didn't think to check notams and when they got to
the destination the airport was closed! So much for the
$100 hamburger. It cost them $150 as they had to divert
to an alternate!
