Yes, Lycomings will develop carb ice. Not quite as readily as a Continental or
Franklin, but they will certainly do so under the right circumstances. Glad he
got it on the ground OK. Not to second guess his actions, but have to wonder
why he didn't pull on carb heat at the first sign that all wasn't well. I'm
guessing he didn't recognize that it was ice. Pulling carb heat on should be
part of his standard emergency sequence when the engine isn't running right,
and likely will be in the future. (Full Rich, carb heat on, full throttle,
switch fuel tanks) None of those actions are likely to get you killed, but
they can sure save your day.

KR> Home from Gathering

2019-09-20 Thread Flesner via KRnet

I brought my KR home from Mt.Vernon this afternoon.  I'll pull a
cylinder this weekend and send it off for repair of the exhaust valve.
Flight home was uneventful for me, other than the weak cylinder that I'm
guessing is causing my vibration, but not so for my friend in his RV10
that took me to Mt.Vernon.  He was running low power as he followed me
home and 5 miles from his home airport his engine starting running
rough.  He was very close to a residential air park with a 2600 foot
grass strip so he decided to land there.  His engine went dead on short
final but he landed safely.  He called me to pick him up so I drove to
the strip.  On my drive to the strip I concluded he had suffered carb
ice and not a fouled plug.  When I got there he said it was running fine
again.  He runs a Lycombing 540 which shouldn't be susceptible to icing
but today was a perfect day for carb ice.  I ran carb heat the entire
time from Mt.Vernon.   A quick run up and he flew home the last five
miles and landed safely.

I guess I'm the last to get the KR home so all is well.  See you at Lee
Summit next year.

I landed in Grand Junction around 2:30 mountain time. Had some pretty high
head winds across Missouri, Kansas and Colorado. 35 to 49 MPH so only made
to Lamar Co. on Sunday. Took off from Lamar this morning with more high head
winds, to find the main part of the Rockies covered with clouds, so flew
back to Spanish Peaks air port and waited for 3 hours. Took off around 12:30
and found a small hole in the line of clouds over one of the passes and that
got me into the San-Lewis Valley and on home with a good dose of turbulence
so that I know I have have been somewhere.

Anyway, It was a great gathering, and great to see everyone.

Re: KR> Home from Gathering

2019-09-16 Thread Jeff Scott via KRnet
The flight home from MVN was the easy part of the day. I was off at 6:30 and
home at 8:00. I was able to talk to Mark and Mike on their way back to
Alabama, and was talking to Rob as he was winging his way west towards Kansas
City. Made for a pleasant flight with company to talk to. Smooth air, so was
hands off flying all the way home.

Once on the ground, I was back on the road by 8:30 on my way back to MVN.
After my third trip of the weekend through "Death's highway", this time hung up
behind a semi that burned to the ground, I was back at MVN at 1:00. Hooked the
car on behind the coach and headed back for my 4th pass down "Death's Highway",
and was back home for the second time of the day by 6:30 in the evening. So it
was a 12 hour day for me with most of it on the road. The flying part was by
far the easiest and most pleasant part of the day.

I really enjoyed the gathering. I don't think I properly expressed my
gratitude for my plane being selected as one of the "Honorable Mentions" for
the gathering. It was truly a surprise to me. Thank you.

Lee's Summit next year! We met a few new folks that will be a welcome

We need some more "I made it home" reports, especially from the fliers.

Great weekend.  Thanks to all that made the effort to attend and to
those that helped plan and execute the event.

It was great to have the friends of many years present when I got my
Master Pilot award.  Keep building, keep flying.

I had a few headwinds flying back to Lees Summit MO today, but made it home
safely after a stop for some extra fuel.

Great to see everyone again! It Sounds like several new KRs in the works or
just finished up recently. Hope to see them all in Lee’s Summit MO next
September.

Thanks to Chris Collins, Larry, and the team that ran the event at Mount
Vernon!

My "drive" home was uneventful too.  50 miles in 56 minutes in my truck
loaded with leftovers.  This year was number 27 in the last 28 years, I
missed Chino, and I'm looking forward to next year with hopefully, a lot
less effort.  I'd like to spend more time with the builders than I've
had time to do in the past.  The KR remains in the hangar at Mt.Vernon
and will return home next week to try on  a new prop.

Thanks to all that helped out this year and to all that attended to make
the Gathering a success.  Financial report in a few days. Right now I
getting ready to celebrate my 55th class reunion and polishing up a 15
minute program to share with attendees.

Happy flying.

I have to second Mike's thoughts about the Gathering. I have been attending
the KR Gatherings off and on for the last 22 years. While one could debate
whether this was the best one ever, for me it was certainly the most pleasant
and enjoyable. I talked to so many builders that are only a very few steps
from being ready to fly their planes. If half of those make it next year, it's
gonna be awesome. I am already looking forward to it.

Hey Guys, Just wanted to let know that I had an awesome time at the Gathering,
seeing all the familiar faces is like going to a family reunion but way cooler.
I am already looking forward to next year. It looks like we are going to have a
lot of new planes ready for the next Gathering. I'm thinking as many as 4 or 5
new ones with some previously flying ones brought back to life.

The flight home was clear skies, 360 miles and 2.5 hours.

Made it home to Lees Summit MO flying along with Griff Picket in his C172 no
issues. Cool and smooth air, a little hazy skies, and just a tiny bit of
tailwind.

Great to see everyone again! See you all again next year at Mount Vernon and
I'm sure I'll see some of you at Oshkosh as well.

Dan and I landed at Greene County Airport last night at 10:00. GCY is about 5
miles from my airpark but we do not have runway lights at the airpark. We
refueled in Bowling Green KY. It was getting dark by the time we took off and
we checked the position lights but had a little problem in that my instrument
lights were not working but I had a small LED light that clips on a hat bill
and we used it to illuminate the instrument. At 7500 we were VFR but on
instruments because of the very dark moonless nights. We flew over a cloud
layer for about 12 hours, really only about 20 minutes but we were sure glad to
see the lights as we got nearer to East Tennessee. We also landed without a
landing light at GCY, not one of my best landings but the airplane was still
flyable. It was a good gathering but I was flying so much that I didn't get
much interaction with the people and the KRs. I did enjoy flying with everyone
and look forward to next year. Dan will probably never fly with me again after
our night fright, ah night flight. Hope everyone made it home safely.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the gathering this year and we
also would like to thank those who worked so hard to make it a success. This
is only the second gathering we have been to, but for sure we'll try not to
miss any more. It was great to meet all of you there and hear about your
progress on your projects. Cheryl and I took an extra day and drove the
rental car down through Missouri and Kansas then back to Omaha to catch our
flight back home to Seattle. We drove by the old Forbes Airforce base in
Topeka Kansas where I was stationed in 1958 and 1959. That brought back some
old memories. I've included a link to some real ameture photography of the
pictures I took at the gathering below. I didn't have time this morning to
put comments , maybe later.

Netters,

Mark Langford and I arrived in southern Illinois (home for me)
just before 2:00PM local. Great flight with tailwind all the way.
Met up with Jim Faughn at Mexico, Missouri for a fuel stop.
Our last 75 miles were at 1500 feet AGL under a cloud deck
but visibility was o.k.

Had a great time seeing everyone again. I haven't read all
of my e-mails yet so I don't know if it's been announced
that Mt.Vernon, Illinois will be the site of the 2004 Gathering.
I hope to see a number of new KR's there and will do my
best to insure the Gathering gets bigger and better each
year.

Thanks to Steve, Linda, Mike, Teri, and everyone that made
this years Gathering a VERY fun time.

Plan to be there in 2004 ! Date to be announced soon.

To all at gathering,
I and my daughter made it home at 7:00 Pm ET with no problems. We did
notice pretty bad looking weather most of the way, so I hope the rest got home
fine. Sam should be home soon and I will check on him tomorrow. It was a real
pleasure to meet yall and put faces to names and find out that there are a
bunch of high quality people in this group. I thourghly enjoyed my time and
learned a lot. I plan to get more KR work done this year (of course) and hope
to see all in Illinois in '04.Thans to the hosts for putting up with us all
and being so gratious. With many thanks - Bill and Elaine Clapp
