I thought you might all like to hear how some of our spiders went with their
lace at the Show.
Noelene has a 1st place and Champion for her tatted bonnet and her Torchon mat
received a third place.
I loved the bonnet it was magnificent! The torchon mat was larger than I
expected and it was love

Tamara,
It's good to know that Vlad is out of critical care
and well on the road to a healthy recovery. I had
been thinking of him, as well as your family.

Gentle Spiders,
This is the last off topic posting - I promise.
Things are definitely looking up :) After 9 days in ICU, Vlad's been
moved to some kind of half-way care (not quite "normal" hospital room,
but...) today, and they're hoping to release him entirely in another

The different bobbins come from both different traditions and from different
problems to be solved. If your bobbins are "bouncing around", it sounds like
you're using fairly heavy thread and the bobbins aren't heavy enough to control
it. I suggest you save the Swiss bobbins for when you try fi
Thank you all for taking the time to give me some very good
information. I think I may keep trying the continental bobbins, using a
different pillow and a different cloth underneath the bobbins for
starters. I never thought about the thread breaking because of the
weight of the spangles when

Hello Lacefriends,
Very short my comentaire to this theme. Here in Germany we had once a
lot of shops who sold all for handicraft in the german Handarbeiten.
Handmade lace didn't belong to this. They diapeared, no have shops who
sell wool. And we have the departement stores which sell Kurzwaren,

Hi Noelene and Spiders,
I think the demise of craft shops is also well-documented here in the UK
too. We are very lucky living relatively close to Colchester, as there is
a shop there - Franklins - which has a great supply of wool and fabrics, and
upstairs has even some lace pillows and bobbins,
Hi Elaine and All,
I have at least one of the Newnham pillows - the largest is the one with a
circular centre, which can be moved round, and with a sort of 'skirt' that
holds the bobbins. It is wonderful for making fans and collars, or huge
round mats, but weighs a ton. It almost needs a block

Hi Kathy,
spangled bobbins are too heavy for the thread used in Honiton lace - hence
the very slim light Honiton bobbins.
I cannot comment on the handling of continental bobbins, as I have no
experience of using them. Part of the problem could be the filling of the
pillow you are using.

Hi, Newnham went bust many years ago. The only thing of his to survive was
his bobbin winder which was bought ot by SMP. Many people said his pillows were
good but Carl said (Mr Newham) "they may say that but they are not willing to
pay the extra!"
