Hello Spiders
Before I go through trial and error I would like your opinion about applying
half stitch in flanders motives. If possible at all, what are the pitfalls?

Hello Jo and everyone
I think half-stitch in Flanders would be ok for a small area, too much and
the design could look odd (but - we suit ourselves!). A Binche piece I'm
working on uses half-stitch in discreet places of the motif, and I like the
effect.

Jo,
A number of old Flemish laces I've worked or seen in books have small
areas of half stitch. In my experience the challenge (pitfall?) is making a
neat transition between the surrounding cloth stitch and the half-stitch
areas. I don't believe I have seen half stitch by itself (i.e., an
Hi Jo -
If you go to my photos in Webshots, there are two or three pictures of
Brugge, the Flanders piece designed by Anne-Marie Verbeke-Billiet.
They are near the end of the folder. This piece has three clouds in
the sky, and each is worked a little differently. Actually,

The only thing I can contribute is that I know it is possible. The pattern
called APE has a section of half stitch, and I have seen some floral motifs
with half stitch leaves. I'd be interested in seeing color coded diagrams
showing how you handle the part where 2 pairs enter at the same pin,

That piece is absolutely amazing! So many variations. I looked at the little
decorations in the cloth stitch sections all over the piece, and how the leaf
area of the trees was done, and your 3 clouds. It is beautiful.

Hi Jenny
Most of your identification seems to be spot on, the only ones I would disagree
with are:

Dear Jo,
I do not profess to any real knowledge in this area, other than a
beginner's, but if you look on p. 49 of Tierisch Flandrisch book by Inge

stitch, with gimp and ring pair. It is not diagrammed as such, from

I agree that terminology about bobbin made tape/braid lace is a problem. I
wish we could all come to an agreement, but I think this will be an ongoing
problem.
In the U.S. tape lace usually refers to bobbin made tape lace. And braid
lace usually refers to a straight lace of the guipure
Hi Jo
The only pitfall I can think of is organizing the half stitch in the
motif. Remember that in Flanders the worker in each row changes and
becomes a passive while another worker takes over. If you can manage to
do that type of change over then it should be fine. Experiment.
