Re: [lace] (Lace) E'Bay seller
I've decided to play. I've sent the question as to whether it's the book or photocopy. when he says its a photocopy then I'll report him for copyright breach as copies are for personal use only and can't be resold. Let's see what happens. The bobbins are terribly over priced. Do you know how he got hold of the estate? Is he selling them for the family? [lace] (Lace) E'Bay seller
Hello all A dear friend of mine called Daphne Dade a lacemaker died last October. I know her things are being sold on E'bay at extortionanet prices. Wooden bobbins books etc. one is a photo copy of a pattern out of one of Geraldine Stotts book,he is selling at £12.99. Please anyone on the list who is new to lacemaking, don't be taken in by him. His name he sells under is Flatteryworld. He did'nt know Daphne as he makes out he does. The information he has on his site,he got from me. I had made a complaint to him because he was trying to sell 2 Norfolk Lacemaker Newsletters, which are worthless pieces of paper for £14.99 which had her name on them. He did take them off. Re: [lace] (Lace) E'Bay seller
I asked the seller if these were the original book / magazine or photocopies and he came back with this answer: Hello, these are just scraps, mainly photocopies. Random mix. They were important enough to keep, by the Lacemaker who owned them, so i thought the public might like them. This is the last lot. yours G J Flattery I responded with: If they are photocopies of patterns then you should not sell them as the law on copyright states that copies can be made for personal use but not to resell. The lacemaker would have made a copy to make the pattern from. That's why they would have kept them. If this was for the book then the price is reasonable as this is what it is going for on Amazone but not for photocopies which are copyright infringements He then turned threatening with: i had already guess that you were a troublemaker. i will be watching your listings in the future. I have thanked him nicely for his polite reply and promptly reported him to ebay. He has withdrawn the item and then threatened me again. Lovely man. Re: [lace] (Lace) E'Bay seller
Update. Ebay take threatening behaviour very seriously and the nice lady I just chatted with has gathered all my emails from the seller and is going to censor him for his behaviour. The book in question is available on amazon for 12 or 13 pounds and he is selling photocopies. You can't appeal to people like this to behave properly and not make money off people but you can get them on copyright. Actually, had it been the original book then I would have been interested in it for one of my students who is 12. [lace] Scoring fabric
This morning, I was looking at Joan Masterson's Ethnic Sampler book, and came across something some of our lacemakers may not know: Scoring fabric. When you have a piece of linen and want to square it up and fold the edges under, it helps to score the reverse side of the fabric. This is also useful when hemstitching: 1. Practice on a scrap of linen fabric before doing it on your finished work. 2. You need a hard surface, such as the waterproof cutting boards quilters use. These usually are printed with grids, and are handy to have for several purposes. (I sometimes hand-block newly-washed delicate laces on one, because the grids help to align the lace. Pressing the lace into place with warm fingers is sometimes all that is needed.) 3. Lay the front of the linen down, place a medium size Tapestry (blunt) needle in the channel where you want the fold. Hold a steady, gentle pressure with the needle (keep it in one position - tilted toward you) and pull the fabric away from the needle in a straight line. A sharp crease should result. Joan was a teacher of many needle techniques, and even taught Norwegian Hardanger at the 1991 IOLI lace convention in New Jersey. That is about as close as she came to making lace. I hope you have seen Hardanger taken down/down/down along an edge, and then cut so the edge is very much like lace, held with but a few remaining woven threads. [lace] Lace and Textiles in Switzerland
On the way to a Cantu bobbin lace class, I will be visiting Switzerland at the end of August. I am searching for textile related exhibitions, museums, factories, shops, lace makers anywhere in Switzerland. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. Any suggestions of other wonderful places along the way are most welcome I found Textilmuseum St. Gallen Abegg-Stiftung Museum Musee Suisse de la machine a coudre et des objets - Fribourg Fashion Museum - Yverdon-les-Bains Thank you, Katherine - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I have found the seller's listing, and there are nine or ten bobbins listed plus a couple of small books related to lace. Nothing remarkable, and certainly overpriced. [lace] Lace makers in Bulgaria?
Hello, I will be in Bulgaria for the Koprivshtitsa Folk Festival next month. Does anyone know if there will be lace makers there (and how to find them)? The festival does not seem to have a website; the main attraction is folk dancing but I would expect other folk arts too. There is a town nearby called Kalofer, which has its own lace festival every year in mid-August, but I will be with a tour group and probably cannot make a side trip to see it. Re: [lace] E'Bay seller
I too had looked. Some items are still there but they have a very long time - 26 days and 29 days for a couple I looked at. Commemoration bobbin for York £9.95. Look for 'Daphne Collection' and 'Wood lace bobbins' as your search criteria. Malvary in Ottawa where we have heat warnings at the moment, and the humidex (combined temperature and humidity) was 41.2c yesterday. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] E'Bay seller
The seller removed the item. I believe they were hoping that in taking it off for sale that they wouldn't gain the wrath of ebay however the emails they sent me are in my profile and the ebay chat captured them so it's a no go. Apparantly you can't hide from ebay. Kind Regards Liz Baker On 20 Jul 2015, at 18:30, Jean Nathan jean...@hotmail.co.uk wrote: Looks like Ebay are true to their word. [lace] Re: before the IOLI Convention
GoogleAnime Iowa My daughter (now 29 and living in Boston area) used to attend when she was in high school and college. For a couple of years she was even one of the volunteers that helped plan the event. She went to college at the Univ of Iowa in neighboring Iowa City. Her array of costumes are still here at our house. Her sewing skills at that age were AMAZING! She also made some spiky bright orange wigs that were so popular people ordered them from her and she made about 6 one summer alone. The Anime folks like to dress up, role play, have costume contests and photo shoots. Lace related content: One year she asked Mom do you have any lace? I'd like to put some on the cuffs. (of the blouse she was making) I happened to have some yardage (from demo'ing) that had no specific use so she used that. Yes, by Monday they will likely be gone. Sorry! [lace] 2015 IOLI Arachne Luncheon
My dear fellow Arachnids! The 2015 IOLI convention is nearly here!!! I am so looking forward to welcoming you to my home state of Iowa! The weather has been warm and humid, typical for late July! But it could be worse! There will be an Arachne lunch gathering on TUESDAY in the Coral ballroom salon B. Due to the fact that the Arachne lunch was abruptly pulled from a previous convention, we are not allowed to advertize it on the IOLI website or in the convention program. It will be announced at the opening dinner and included on the hotel signage. This is not a sit down plated lunch. The hotel is offering grab and go cash concessions in the Coral A salon. Pick up what you like, or bring your own brown bag, and meet in Salon B where it will be more private for our group. (Anyone is welcome to purchase concessions and there are tables in Salon A for eating as well.) The extra salon will only be open for the Arachne (Tuesday) and OIDFA lunches (Friday). And again, I will warn everyone that there is a very interesting convention the preceding weekend. The hotel will be booked SOLID on Saturday night. Check out is noon Sunday. These people are at the hotel just like we are for activities at the hotel, so it is very unlikely that many will be checking out early. Their convention also offers late check out for an extra fee and it sounds like it is popular. Their closing ceremonies are around 5-6pm (I believe). Do not expect to get a room early! Your patience is appreciated! Sit back and people watch! [lace] lacemakers in Bulgaria
Sally I don't know about bobbin lace makers. But there is a kind of needle lace made there, called Kene. It uses the same knot as Turkish oya/Armenian knotted needlelace. Needlelacetalk has one member who makes that kind. But she lives in Switzerland. You would have to join needlelacetalk to contact her. http://needlelacetalk.ning.com/profile/MarianaBrankina She has posted 56 photos of that kind of lace. http://needlelacetalk.ning.com/photo/photo/listForContributor?screenName=0qd3 nciz81xp3 Lorelei - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Lace makers in Bulgaria?
Hello Sally, I have just spent a day with a Bulgarian lacemaker friend who came to visit me in Spain. She is called Bistra Pisancheva ( http://www.bistrapisancheva.com/index.php?/bobbinlace/) and makes really interesting lace, not at all conventional. She is also very good making Kene, a needle lace with some specific characteristics of Bulgaria. She told me that bobbin lace started in Bulgaria very recently (only one century ago or so) and that there are only about 5 lacemakers in her country. She will be able to answer your questions, I am sure. Good luck and have a good time in Bulgaria. -- Antje González www.vueltaycruz.es - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
