I still aim for an expressive name for the file, but my folder structure comes into play here too. So... JohnDoe1890_FamilyPic.jpg will tell me the who and the what. It also tells me there where, the JohnDoe1890 folder. However, I'd need a readme or something with an explanation of my

James, I do the same, but as it is possible to have the same file name in different folders I add the folder name too the start of the file name e.g. Family2012_JonSmit_cens1911.jpg, where Family2012 is the folder name, ensures that all my images have a unique name. Ron Ferguson

I do similarly except using the MRIN at the beginning of the name, then a date, then a number. eg. 0037-1890-01 and then _e for edits, or _s for resized, or both _es, es2, etc. So, a file-name might look like 0037-1890-01_e.tif I don't put any names or other identifying information in the

What I meant by 'similar' was Ron's method of putting a family folder name at the beginning of his photo file names. I do the same; I just use MRIN's. Clearly, not all genealogy programs use MRIN's so the meaning of the numbers could be irrelevant to someone else. So far, that's not an issue
