Sorry Bob, maybe I didn't express myself properly in the original post;
I don't want to look back, I don't want to keep Legacy 8 at all & I'm
happy to move with the times, it's my current directory naming structure
that concerns me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 default install directory naming structure

2017-04-22 Thread Bob Austen
Hi David,

I made a copy to the Legacy 8 directory. Legacy 9 uses the v8 file and
converts it to the new format. I then renamed the legacy8 file and was able to
open it with Legacy 8. However, I did not copy the rest of the user files so
Legacy 8 opened with some of the attributes of v9. So, yes, Legacy 9 will
install to the same directory (and no warnings or options).

However, it begs the question, why would you want Legacy 8 after upgrading to
v9. The look and ‘feel’ of v9 is the same as v8 so I don’t see any reason to
preserve v8. I did it so I could go back to v8 to assist others that had not
upgraded. I don’t think that’s necessary as v9 is basically the same with a few
enhanced features (and a couple of bug fixes!)

After I upgraded to v9 even 99%+ of my settings were the same and my file even
opened up to the last person viewed.

No need to look back!

Hi Listers,

I've just successfully purchased Legacy 9 + the pdf manual & downloaded both.

Before doing the install I did a Check/Repair, found all was well, then did a
check of media paths, and found to my surprise a couple of errors, which I've
since fixed and double checked.

Yes I've done multiple backups to play it safe, but I haven't as yet installed
Legacy 9 !

You see when I view my old Legacy8 directory structure in Windows 7, it all
hangs off C:\Legacy8 and of course all the subdirectories flow downwards from
this. My question is this: When I do the install, will Legacy 9 install into
this same directory ?

What would my best course of action be please ? Should I change the directory
name, or just curse my own pedantic nature and wish I'd just chosen C:\Legacy
to begin with ?

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] "System call failed"

2017-04-22 Thread Ian Thomas
Lucy, do you have the same laptop and its internal hard disk that you had the
previous problems on – with Windows 8.1?
There are many system calls, so the Windows message isn’t very helpful in
itself.
If the hardware is faulty, or disk space is a problem, that could cause your
ongoing problem.
Have you made space by empting the Recycle bin, and allowing Windows to clean
up unnecessary files?
In Windows 10, Start menu, Setup – search with the word cleanup – you will get
an item “free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files”.
If your problem is a flakey hard disk, you should run the Windows chkdsk
utility (a part of every Windows since year dot).
It is also a good idea to run a scan on your system for malware – just use the
inbuilt Windows Defender (again, accessible from Setup).

Hi users

Sometime ago, when using Legacy 8.0 I kept running out of space on my laptop so
I had the "brilliant" idea of moving the Documents folder to an external drive.
That worked fine - until that drive died, then I started getting the 'system
call failed' notice. Eventually I was able to work past that (not sure how) but
the program was never stable.

When Legacy 9.0 came out I replaced 8.0 with much the same results -- very
unstable. And today, while trying to get some stability to the program, my old
friend "system call failed" came back. Now I realize that this appears to be
connected to the Documents folder (the "special" one with the little icon
inside the larger one). I've tried a couple of options to try to designate or
redesignate the documents folder to no avail. I'm running Windows 10.

I'm hoping that maybe one of you can provide a few words of advice?? Please?
and thank you!!!

I've never used an iPad.
Somehow the converted file has to go from your computer to your iPad.

For an Android tablet I just connect it via USB and the Families Sync
software transfers it.

See the Help file on Families Sync and the website

There are user forums there as well.

Re: [LegacyUG] V9 Error Code 3045

2017-04-22 Thread Pete
There appear to be two ".ldb" files under the Legacy Family Tree/Data
directory.
Before you run the Legacy Program, check the "Data" directory and delete any
".ldb" files you find. When you run Legacy, It will recreate the necessary
".ldb" files.

There is a possibility that this is caused by an anti-virus program putting
a lock on (the technical term) the .ldb lock file. This is not your Legacy
database itself, but associated with it.
If this is the cause, then you can tell your ant-virus software to exclude
scanning of MSACCESS.EXE files But I only know this for Symantec's DLP (Data
Loss Prevention) client software. It may not apply to other "domestic" virus
checkers.

Even if this is NOT the problem, you may have to delete the .ldb file. Check
the Legacy Help web page - I think there is a specific article there. The
file is recreated by the "Access database engine" which Legacy uses, and
deleting it does no harm.
Cathy Pinner or Brian Kelly may have some observations about Error 3045?

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Writer for UK Baptisms

2017-04-22 Thread Cathy Pinner

Barry,

Church Records include Baptisms, Burials and Marriages. The records are
recorded in Church Registers or "record books" in Legacy speak.
So you're looking for Church records > Church record books > created at
local level (parish, congregation, meeting, etc) > and then the format
you've used. I've chosen to use the Microfilm/fiche rather than online
images as I've seem some at the Archives on microfilm in a rare visit to
England and some online.
I use the Film ID in the Master Source to acknowledge both sources: eg:
Images courtesy of South West Heritage Trust & Parochial Church Council
& FindMyPast
I actually make a Master Source for each church but I could have instead
chosen to make a Master Source for each Archive.

In my case: Dorset History Centre, the London Metropolitan Archives, etc.
I learn where the registers actually are archived.

So one Master Source reads: St Margaret (Topsham, Devon, England);
Images courtesy of South West Heritage Trust and Parochial Church
Council & FindMyPast, Devon Heritage Centre, Exeter.

and a source citation:
St Margaret (Topsham, Devon, England), "Marriages 1417A/PR/1/15
1837-1881," Page 1, No 1 1837 marriage of William Harris & Rebecca
Mawditt; Images courtesy of South West Heritage Trust and Parochial
Church Council & FindMyPast, Devon Heritage Centre, Exeter.

This "1417A/PR/1/15" is the Archive reference for that particular
register. If it's not obvious on the online site, I look at the Archive
catalogue and find it and also record their microfilm number, if any is
given. At the archives you can usually only see parish registers on
microfilm - and probably now the online images.

The Source Detail has a "Title" field for the name of the actual
register ( or church and register if you chose to have one Master Source
for Devon Heritage Centre)
Then one for Item of interest where I record the page and record number
from the register etc

Here's one for Dorset: Saint Lawrence (Folke, Dorset, England),
"Christenings PE/FOL/RE 2/1 1813-1906," p 1, no 3 baptism of George
Uppill (1813); Images courtesy DHC and Ancestry.com; DHC microfilm
MIC/R/511, Dorset History Centre, Dorchester.

Does that help?
Cathy

Parochial Church Council), an archive reference (1955A/PR/1/1) that
makes no mention of the page number or line number and whose archive
reference is it?

For sourcing purposes who holds the original Baptism document, the
Parochial Church Council, South West Heritage Trust or Findmypast?
Only the South West Heritage Trust and Findmypast have URLs. In years
to come which of the three will still be around?

Do I select Source Writer>Church Records>Church Record Books>created
at local level (parish, congregation, meetings, etc and do I do the
best I can with that? The Source Detail related to this Master Source
is not very informative.

To date I have not attached any images or transcripts to any sources
or citations which might help complete the picture of the source, but
that's another To Do Task.

So does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone with ancestors in

"This record was confirmed as a match and is available on James Edward

If the message states "confirmed as a match and is available on James

 James

 made

The next part of the message is confusing as it then states to "review

 I

Application Programming Interface (API). This is a set of rules and
programs provided by the site to allow other programs access. Even if a
site has an API they may not be willing to allow the Legacy program access.

There were some discussions among the Beta testers and programmers
during testing of Legacy 9 about adding other common sites but most
could not be added either because there is no API or the host would not
license Legacy to use their site's API.

The Legacy programmers were supportive of adding other hint sources but
cannot do so without permission. I cannot answer your question about the
specific sites you mention. Some of the sites you mention are included
in the list of places you can manually search using Internet > Search
Internet.

Re: [LegacyUG] V9 Error Code 3045

2017-04-22 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Dave,

I have no issue with backup on exit, where the file is closed, or with
‘File/Backup File’ where the file is actually still open in Legacy. But I use
Widows 10.

I have not tried uploading to Legacy Cloud. Maybe I’m too cautious, but I
can’t find any privacy statement or anything to say what they do with my data
on the cloud.

Error 3045 is a MS Windows error and may only affect Win7, Vista and XP. Google
‘Error 3045’ for some causes and possible fixes.

Answering yes repeatedly results in the same message. It is set to backup

Also, uploading to the Legacy Cloud also fails. It seems to backup ok, then

[LegacyUG] mapping locations

2017-04-22 Thread Cheryl Rothwell
In my Legacy 9 the maps seem to more than a little off.

As an example, my 3rd great grandparents were married in Madison County,
Ohio. I thought - and Google agrees - that that is between Columbus and
Dayton. With Map my Family it is on Lake Erie, east of Cleveland toward the
New York line. Logan County, Illinois, has moved to eastern Macon County,
Illinois.

Note that there is no other info in those locations, just the county name,
state, USA.

What is causing this? I assume it is something I am doing but what?

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Relinking

2017-04-22 Thread Kris
I didn't know about the "path too long" problem, but I'm guessing I
haven't run into it because, with a few exceptions, I use a numerical
system for files. Early on, too many sources pertained to too many
surnames and I found myself getting stuck as to how to name them with
surnames. Once I did pick one, turned out I couldn't find what I was
looking for because I couldn't remember which name I picked.

Richard Wasshnova that Legacy adds a considerable number of
characters to the path of a given medium. Although I have used a
little utility called TLPD to search out any paths that are too long,
it seems my effort has been for naught.

In addition to asking whether anyone uses Legacy Family Tree only for
data and not media, I’m very curious now to learn how other people
are naming their documents to avoid the path too long problem.

Many thanks, Priscilla Glasow

Re: [LegacyUG] Search Feature

2017-04-22 Thread Brian Kelly
The only control you have over the contents of the list side is hose
items above the line in the Options menu.

The Customize display option changes what is shown in the right panel
details tab for the person.

If you cannot read contents of the left side columns you can make them
wider by stretching the width of the screen. The division of the screen
is fixed but a wider screen will make both the right and left panels
wider. Most, if not all, of the extra width will be used in the Name column.

Re: [LegacyUG] Use of Hints (new in v9)

2017-04-22 Thread Brian Kelly
Not at all. Your tree is still restricted to your computer UNLESS you
have made the choice to upload your tree to MyHeritage. MyHeritage
allows users to have their own trees (Much like Ancestry.com) but there
is no automatic upload of your tree to MyHeritage to support the hints.

Hints pass information about one person at a time to let MyHeritage
search their databases for any possible matches. It is the same as the
existing manual searches you can perform using Internet > Search
Internet which also passes information on a person. The Hints process
performs those searches in the background so you do not have to manually
execute each search.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Relinking

2017-04-22 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova
Priscilla,

I assume your files are in multi-branching directories like mine are.
My default location of media files:
C:\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\V\

>From there a typical path to a file is:
Docs\Civil_Records\France\Dept_Meuse\Marriage_Villers_&_Gratriiau.jpg

The combined default and specific file path is easily under windows max
however the backup media zip file inserts this ahead of that path:
C:\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\vanwasshnova-media
2017-04-19 9.41.09 PM.zip\

This total path gets to be near window max:
C:\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\vanwasshnova-media
2017-04-19 9.41.09 PM.zip\Users\Richard\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\Media\V\Docs\Civil_Records\France\Dept_Meuse\Marriage_Villers_&_Gratriiau.jpg

If the filename were 20 characters longer it would simply not be added to
the zip backup with no warning. Only when I restore media to my laptop
would I realize the oversize file is missing.

To shorten the backup you could delete the time of day 9.41.09 PM from the
dafault (11 characters) or change Legacy Family Tree directory to LFT8 (28
character savings since it appears twice in the path).

Good luck,
Richard Van Wasshnova

information in your file. That message by MyHeritage only means that
they have recorded the match on their web site and, if you have a
MyHeritage tree on their site that includes the person, the match will
now show in their record on that tree.

If the message states "confirmed as a match and is available on James Edward
Cody's Legacy Family Tree profile" where can I see the "available on James
Edward Cody's Legacy Family Tree profile"? When I click on the individual's
information screen I cannot find anywhere that an update in Legacy was made
for the residency of this person.

The next part of the message is confusing as it then states to "review the
record extract useful information from it (e.g. birth date) and add it
manually to the Legacy Family Tree profile." Is this just stating that I
should look at the record and "if" I find other new information then I
should add it manually?

Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Use of Hints (new in v9)

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Relinking

Use LegacyStories. Org to record your stories and connect pictures and stories
together then use the internet link to attach them to LFT. Legacy stories is
free for 500 pix. and the stories can also be linked to FamilySearch. There is
a mobile app. It take 7 minutes to learn all you need to use it. You will
love it and is solves the probem.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Media Relinking

Does anyone not use Legacy Family Tree for media? The media backup and Media
Relinker are unreliable and I’m considering not using the software for
recording media any more. Yesterday I found out that the backups that I
religiously did were not including masses of documents and media. In the mail
archives I found a comment by Richard Wasshnova that Legacy adds a considerable
number of characters to the path of a given medium. Although I have used a
little utility called TLPD to search out any paths that are too long, it seems
my effort has been for naught.

In addition to asking whether anyone uses Legacy Family Tree only for data and
not media, I’m very curious now to learn how other people are naming their
documents to avoid the path too long problem.

Many thanks,
Priscilla Glasow
