each tab to give me different look. I use it all the time to just for
that. I use the detail tab. It gives me a look at that individual, his
life etc, that you would need a few more mouse clicks for me with the
 'Index Tab'.

I use the name list for a picture of someones life without going to that
 individual's view, nor Index View
Here is how I use it.

 Aee a pedigree
 Same with family view
Temple tab ( In index view, you cannot see, without a few clicks)
Edit view ( Where you can change information right on that screen )
 Sources, also Cite Sources
 And etc, ..

I use the Index Tab ( Not to be confused with the Names List) just for
just a quick look at BMD
Adding to much information to the Index View tab, you need to scroll
to see it, and then you cannot see the view. (Name list give it all to you)

There is no little hack. The directions are quite clear - use the
- for a single source to the item where the cursor is located -- use
the triple - to source everything on the page that has data. It
makes it so easy if you find a family with a bunch of kids on a
census. AS you enter the information on them - just hit the triple
- and they are all sourced. Quick and easy!

Later use is more problematic because some of the other events may not have
 the same source.

Many of us really miss the ability to have the Source Clipboard contain
multiple sources.  Before Legacy removed that convenience, you were able to
have multiple sources on one clipboard and enter them all at once - to one
event or all.  That was a enormous time-saver when you have several sources
for one event but not all events.

Yes it is terrible and a lot of cleanup.  There are way to many of
little gotchas like this that I cannot believe the software gets a
5-star rating on review sites.  Sure it's a nice app, I can almost go
along with the best available (I've not tried them all), but I can
only give it a 5-stat once I know all the little hacks one must to do
actually use it effectively.  It is maddening.

 Anyway, Ron,
If it is one of your most used features, how are you using it?  Do you
actually blurt a source to all events.  How does adding a death
certificate say to a residence event work?

Bert HAS IT! Go to your Legacy folder and copy the file
LegacyCharting.chm. Go to the LegacyCharting7 folder within Legacy
and PASTE the LegacyCharting.chm file. Help will now work correctly!!

A minor BUG but one that should be fixed - The help files ends up in
the wrong directory during INSTALL!!

 Dawn,

I don't think it is a case of nobody having tried it, indeed I can remember
similar sorts of requests over the years. It can be done in html, but I
can't think of a way of doing it for a chart/printing. Someone else may have
an idea though. It may be possible to create the html and use another
program to transfer that to, say, a pdf format, but I have never tried this.

My reasoning is because I need a visual way to see the relation
between many people with same or similar names. Raymond, Raymond J.,
 etc.

Any ideas at all about how to accomplish this?

 Dawn,

I guess Help was inadvertantly omitted, I understand it is known and
 will be corrected.

Your other problem is rather more difficult. The siblings are not
included, of course, because they are not ancestors. I cannot see
how this can be done in Charting, as the obvious way is to create an
fdb file with just the people you want, but you would then have to
create a descendant chart for multiple people and Charting cannot do
 this.

There is a File/Import and Export function that relates to user settings,

USR files are not specific to each family file. They are associated with
each Legacy installation. IOW, one set in C:\Legacy6\, one set in

age 10; Alfred F, age 9; Charles L, age 5 and Emily E, age 1.

If I wanted to go to a lot of trouble, I could list Events like Religion
and enter the person's religion from each census, noting the year. Same
for Occupation, Residence, Marital Status, and any other categories you
 can think of.

Too much like work. Let old Aunt Ida read for herself. I simply type out
or Control-C when I can, everything the census shows, eg.

 1891 Census of Canada
 Name:           Joshua Adams
 Gender:         Male
 Marital Status: Married
 Age:            57
 Birth Year:     abt 1834
 Birthplace:     Ontario
Relation to Head of House: Head
 Religion:       Church of England
 French Canadian:        No
 Father's Birth Place:   Ontario
 Mother's Birth Place:   England
 Province:       Ontario
 District Number:        127
 District:       Wellington South
 Subdistrict:    Guelph City
 Archive Roll #: T-6377
 Household Members:
 Name    Age
 Joshua Adams    57
 Maria Adams     48
 Harriet Adams   27
 Annie Adams     23
 Edith Adams     15
 Helen Adams     13
Source Citation: 1891 Census Place: Guelph City, Wellington South,
Ontario. Roll: T-6377, Family No: 141.

I copy the image and attach it to the Event so it's there to check when
i want, especially if something in the transcription seems out of
kilter. Then when printing a book, Aunt Ida sees everything I do,
without having to print each image too.

But, as it's been said many times here, everyone has their own way of
doing things, so whatever works for you..  One caution though -
think about it from every aspect - who is going to see your work, will
they have a computer, will they be able to see the images, etc. It's a
lot more work to change everything midstream than to start off doing a
 thorough job.

There is a feature in Windows 7 that makes it even simpler. Just open
the two windows you want side by side, say Firefox (Or IE) and Legacy.
Then take the top bar of one of the windows and drag it to the left,
off the screen. When you release the mouse, the window will pop to
fill the left half of the screen. Do the same with the other window
dragging it to the right side and viola, split screens with two
 different programs.

If helps if you put your cursor as far left as possible before
dragging left and as far right as possible before dragging right. Just
makes it happen quicker without having to drag so far.

Unfortunately it won't work with overlayed windows within Legacy. For
example, if you drag a source window to the left, it will fill half
the screen, but you can't drag the underlying family screen to the
right. This is a Windows issue, not a Legacy issue.

But, there is a work around.

If you start with the family window and drag it right, then open, say,
the event window and drag it left, you can see both windows at the
same time. You can only edit in the event window, however. You can
open additional windows from the left window (in our example), say the
source window, and keep dragging them left and work on the topmost
window while still seeing the family window on the right. You still
have to close all the windows individually just as you normally do.

(A close and save all would sure be nice...)

How do you get back from this split screen view? Click on the Maximize
button in the upper right (looks like a square) to make the window
full screen, then click on the Restore Down button (same button, but
this time it looks like two pieces of paper on top of each other). You
are now back to where you started.

Sounds a little complicated, but once you've done it a time or two
 it's pretty easy.

I do have a question about what you say about adding people (who may or may
not be connected to your tree (I'm assuming what you call tree is what
Legacy calls family file and I think of as data base) Do you have a
separate tree for each person, or do you have one tree that is for all such
 people?

I do like Robert's idea of having one pristine and documented tree/family
file, as well.  I am just not sure how I would document those I KNOW from my
own family experience, are legitimate family members, but have never gotten
official documentation such as birth certificates, etc.  For ex.: I knew my
Aunt Zua all my life, and know her to be my grandfather's sister, so I have
never spent time tracking down official proof of her parentage.  (Robert -
do you accept personal family knowledge as a documentation?)

I asked for the training tapes of Legacy for Christmas, so perhaps later I
won't have so many newbie questions (I have actually used Legacy for a year
 or more).

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain your method so well.  And

main family tree. Those people are ones who reoccur in my research but I
have NO IDEA how they might connect to my family line…

But then there are others I’ll find who I’m family certain they do belong,
but have not found concrete proof… Those I handle a bit differently as
 explained below:

I link them in my main database where I believe they fit, adding a
 notation
in the _Title Prefix_ placeholder (this field is normally reserved for
 titles such as Sir, Knight, King etc.;

 First name: John
 Last name: Powers
Title Prefix: [possible son of Adam]

 -or-

 First name: Jane
 Last name: Smith
Title Prefix: [possible wife of Adam Powers]
 And so on…

It is easy via the search function to locate anyone with a '[' in their
 name. ( SearchFindIndividualPrefixContains[ )

Linking them allows me to see at a glance where I ‘think’ they belong
 within
the tree structure, yet at the same time making it clear (as it will show
 up
as part of their name) the relationship is unproven requiring more
 research
 to confirm.

I have found it the easiest way for me to keep track of them, whereas
keeping them only in notes or in a separate tree or database I’d likely
forget all about them for the most part…

I have also used this same tactic (adding a note to the Title Prefix spot
 to
families I have researched and determined are not part of my family line
even though they are living in the same area; same timeframe and with same
surname etc.  They will be entered into their own tree, not connected to
 my
 family tree as;

 First name: Jane
 Last name: Smith
Prefix Title: [NOT my family line]

This allows this Jane Smith to sort with the ‘other’ Jane Smith’s and yet
will be easily recognizable that this particular Jane is not part of my
family line. It also keeps me aware of who I have researched and
 determined
to NOT be my family – very helpful with some of my families who have
 common
surnames such as Smith, Williams, Gibson etc.

Not saying this is the BEST way, but works well for me. I hope I've
explained my method clearly. It's easy to do, but not nearly as easy to
 explain :-)

Subject: [LegacyUG] Assigned sources for: (what are these?)

In the Assigned Sources for: window, near the bottom of the list are:
 Child Status:
 Father rel:
 Mother rel:
What are Father rel and Mother rel?
AND why does my source window show:
 Marr: Flo Williams
 Had no children: Flo Williams
 Did not marry: Flo Williams
 Mar Notes: Flo Williams
Flo Williams WAS married and had 13 children - all of the info for her
parents, siblings, husband, marriage and kids are entered and show up on
 reports properly.
What are these used for? Are there some sources that I should be
 assigning to these?
I hope these questions are not too elementary for LUG. I did attempt to
find the answers in the Help file before asking.
 Thanks!
 Deborah

[LegacyUG] List of ancestors by birth year

2009-12-17 Thread GeoSci
Trying to get a list of ancestors of a particular person by birth year
only (not date) - sorted by date.  I can get ancestors easily and tag
them - then I search on the tag and get a list (alphabetical by
Surname).  But I want sorted by birth year.  Ideas? (in other words -
what simple little thing am I forgetting??)
Thanks
Keith
