Unfortunately I'm running OpenBSD on it, so Check-It/Norton won't work.

I've poked around a bit, and have found absolutely _no_ errors, which makes me
think hard drive or controller.

Thanks for the offer though.

If my "reseating" dosen't fix it, I'll give that a try. I have a 2Gig'er

David, thanks so much for such a complete checklist! I'll do this - I'll
pick up the Laplink/DCC compatible parallel port cable. Clearly one of my
problems was that I just unhooked a printer and used that cable. . .
Certainly I could never have gotten everything right without such a clear
write-up.

Thanks again!

Exactly the same one here, downloaded the new one, although not upgraded
yet.
It works sometimes if I re-install the W2K sound driver, but then if I add
new hardware (or sometimes for the hell of it!) the sound will just screw up
again. Back down the Windows 98 maybe? but I could never get that to support
the hibernation properly argh!
Does ME support hibernation like W2K?

On Another note does anyone have a Ubinetics GC201 GSM PCMCIA card? Cannot
get mine to work in W2K either...

these will ensure it works
1) make sure it's a Laplink/DCC compatible parallel port cable, not a standard
printer cable!
2) make sure bi-directional/ecp/epp is selected in the bios.
3) make sure you've got IPX/SPX installed on both (known MS Windows bug that

5) make sure you have Microsoft Networking installed in the Network control

Hio,

Sorry to read about the problems with ur Libby.

What I would suggest, is to run a benchmark program that tests everything
that is in your Libby.
That gave me always some clue what was wrong with a system.
Classic programs are Check-It (I can get u a copy of it) and the Norton
Suite of Utilities.

If it's a thermal problem (some bad soldered link that has extra resistance,
which will increase at higher temperature) then it's a hopeless situation, I
guess.

Keep on hoping..

100 lockup problem

2001-08-29 Thread Tom Dixon

Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 12:06:56 -0600 (MDT)
From: Tom Dixon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: 100 lockup problem

I have been having increasing problems with my 100ct. It's 64m, 4gig drive,
_not_ overclocked.

It locks up after about 10 minutes of use. The screen freezes, and you can
not type or move the mouse. All you can do (that I have found so far) is to
power it off and restart.

Often when it attempts to restart, it does not see the hard drive. It dosen't
error, it just tries to boot off the floppy, and never appears to try the hard
drive.

Also, when it is cold, and I power it up, the "On" and "Disk" lights come on,
but the screen never gets power, and it never boots. I have to remove the
battery to get it to shut off, and put the battery back, and boot. It
_always_ boots on the 2nd try when cold.

Are these symptoms of a HD controller failure, or over heating? Has anyone
seen this before? Do I have multiple problems?

What are my options? Is there a good dealer/repair shop? Or should I just
scrap it and buy another? I _don't_ want to scrap it if possible as I don't
have $ or time to get another.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long message.

Hi Neil!

Thanks for your kind reply and your patience! Yes, I do have a 1.6 gig hd
in my CT70. However, one of my problems is that it uses Win95 Japanese
version. I can't get rid of the Japanese version and one of my intereface
problems with my desktops (I think) is the old Win95 version. This HD
would come loaded and ready to go. . .

If you have the CD, the 'add new software' should do it. Or download the

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but this is the only
list I am on with a fair number of knowledgable Windows
users on it...

I had discarded IE from a W98 desktop as I normally use netscape, but
now I need to put it back for someone. It seems to be something
of a special case, as deleting it from one 'users' desktop removes
it from all desktops, and as I recall there was some message about
it not being possible to put it in the recycle bin.

Anyone know if a way to re-install IE without a re-install of the
OS?

Caution on netbeui as noted by Jon - if you need shared folders with a
desktop machine, ms default is to use netbeui, so removing the vxd will zap
that. You can use sharing folders over tcp/ip by including the bindings
(yeah, and rebooting!) in the network setup (and that's the only way it will
work if you're using samba on a linux box) but be advised that if you
connect to the internet with shared folders on tcp/ip and no firewall, it's
very easy to share your disk with everybody...

This problem is common on my W95b installation on a ct50, usually occurs on
shutdown, or as you note, after a hibernation. The ms knowledge base
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q169/9/87.asp?FR=1
indicates that this is something to do with the power management, but I
never managed to cure it completely by the methods they suggest - killing
the advanced power controls.

My 50 is unstable when hibernating windows but has no problems with linux -
I have no idea why that might be.

There's a lot of mention of this problem on the net (you've probably seen
them!) which suggests that microsoft is incompatible with quite a lot of
hardware and software out there - from Norton antivirus to HP printers.

What am I talking about? I mean, of course, that the hardware and software
is not compatible with windows. I think :)

Seriously - if you've had to kill the msgsrv program, the system is probably
screwed and you're recommended to restart.

Neil

Try two things.
Get the latest video driver from Toshiba US web site...
and... (something I found out a few days back)
rename the netbeui.vxd from the windows/system directory & reboot...

The netbeui thing seems to work for me BUT it could affect any
network settings you have so make sure you backup first!

Hibernation problem

2001-08-29 Thread Azcona, Ibon

From: "Azcona, Ibon" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Hibernation problem

Hello to everybody,

I came across with this mailing list due to a problem I was trying to
solve. I´ve a 100CT Libretto and recently upgraded to Windows 98.
As soon as I installed it a new problem came up: the hibernation
stopped working properly, I mean, every time I try to resume the
Libretto hangs. I try to use the Ctrl+Alt+Del several times and finally
I get the Task Menu indicating me: Msgsrv32 (Not Responding), after
I close that program, I can use the Libretto without problems.

Has anybody had this or a similar problem? I´d be very grateful for
whom would help me.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Ibon.

Re: 70CT hard drive replacement

Er, why? Don't you already *have* a 1.6G drive in your CT70?

Having said that, if it came out of one, it will go into one...with the
machine powered down (naturally) unscrew the two screw at the extreme left
hand side of the bottom (i.e. the 'a' end of the keyboard!) and lift of the
plastic cover. Then pull the disc out by the handle that's revealed.

As they say in all the best car maintenance manuals:

o Reassembly is a reversal of the above procedures
o There is now no reason why the engine should not start :)

But you might have to install an operating system of some sort...
