When I install Suse 8, it connects to VM's TCP/IP machine and runs just
fine. This is z/VM 4.2 btw. However, when I cycle Linux, it doesn't

SLES8 that used to in SLES7. Where did they go? /etc/rc.config is a good place to
start. I see that some of the stuff has moved to /etc/sysconfig, but not all. Where
did it go? Where's the documentation?
Did you use YaST2 to do the installation? Perhaps that sort of task is done
from there. One way to find out where some of this might be done is
rpm -ql packagename
and see what winds up under /etc.
