I've never supplied the -t option unless I need a specific filesystem
type (eg -t iso9660) or I want something other than NFS. It's probably
good practice nowadays to use it, but let's not confuse things at this
point.

He will need "-t nfs" to tell the mount that the filesystem type is
nfs. Unless mount looks for a colon in the filename and assumes nfs if
it finds one. Does it?
No. tar does not produce or manipulate labels of any kind (IBM or
otherwise).
You need to find a copy of the ansitape program from comp.sources.unix.
ansitape allows you to produce both IBM and ANSI labels and do other
manipulations with tapes coming from other systems. Google will lead you

Nope. Not at all. GSkit is a totally different beast (SSLSERV support
would have been a lot simpler if it WERE OpenSSL, but... c'est la vie).
GSkit is a completely new implementation.

If you primarily need GUI admin tools, the Tivoli server is fairly nice,
and that's the major advantage to it: a very nice user interface. I
don't see any major performance or functional benefits in the Tivoli

There are three steps to NFS mounts:
1) on the NFS server: the filesystem to be exported must be mounted.
2) on the NFS server: the filesystem must be exported to your client

It looks like we are almost to the point of implementing
a production linux image which will be an oracle back-end
for a public-access webserver. Naturally the concept of
multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine is
a new concept for the network/security/sysadmin types.

I should have been clearer, it is not a VM problem but a LINUX qeth
