Hi to everyone !
I have currently installed:
- z/VM 4.4
- SLES8 under z/VM 4.4
- DB2/ESE 8.2 under SLES8 under z/VM 4.4
Now our next goal is to migrate our current DB2/VM 7.1 into the DB2 ESE 8.2
under SLES8 but the main problem I have is that I can't find any migration
guide or any guidelines

We are planning to migrate Oracle from some WinTel dedicated platforms
to z/Linux (yes 64 bit also).
My stance is with dedicated platforms, the memory allocation was
simple.
Total memory on box - memory needed for the OS - memory needed for

I know Oracle 10g isn't certified for use on SLES 9 (64bit), but I
thought I might try and install it. Has anybody managed to do this ? Or
would I just be wasting my time ?
As our zLinux install is relatively new we went straight on to SLES 9, I
am loathe to install SLES 8 in another LPAR just so
If you can wait just a little while, it will be certified. The next
pathset, if I'm not mistaken, will have SLES9 certification.
And while you're at it, it doesn't hurt to try.

We were in the same situation. We trashed the tapes and reordered z/VM
Version 5.1 on DVD. We then installed z/VM using the DVD drive in the HMC.
This was our first exposure with z/VM and it worked without a hitch.

One of the options we're looking at in the future is moving to

Does anyone have any experience with Unidata (good, bad or
ugly)? I've never heard of it.
Is anyone aware of another list that addresses Unidata database?

Hello,
Actually, there IS a commercially viable mainframe implementation
of Unix. UTS Global was spun-off from Amdahl Corp. a few years ago,
and we continue to provide (and support) an SVR4 implementation that
was ported - and optimized - to run on XA/ESA/S390/zSeries processors.

The CD for z/VM is meant for the unit that emulates tape. You need the

We assume that CD media should work on DVD. But the CD media that

If you could gen a tape drive for your z/VM LPAR and your operations are
willing to manually mount/dismount tape, then you could IPL from the tape
