Linux on the Mainframe
John
I have the book and have read it, it gives you a very high level

Read it, it cost a lot more than 5.49USD. The list price on the back of
the book I have is 49.99 USD.
The book is not bad if you are unfamiliar with the concept of running
Linux under z/VM.
If where you are, it costs only 5.59 USD, then you cannot go wrong.

Of course, where equals the device number. Something like this

You can also go in through YaST2, hardware, DASD, select device,

Hi to all.
We have finally installed our DB2 under SLES8 which is under z/VM 4.4
It works fairly good.
We have connected our DB2/SLES8 with a DB2/VM database and
have exported/imported tables from DB2/VM into DB2/SLES8 perfectly.
We have also achieved to access DB2/SLES8 from a CMS user by
I think you could do this:
1. Copy from /etc/sysconfig/hardware/skel/hwcfg-dasd-eckd the installation
procided sample configuration file:
#cp /etc/sysconfig/hardware/skel/hwcfg-dasd-eckd
/etc/sysconfig/hardware/hwcfg-dasd-bus-ccw-0.0.
2. Set the device online. You can do this either
I've just placed a copy of our Linux tape mount DVM and Linux client on
sinenomine.net for download. This is a minimialist version of a more
sophisticated (and commercially supported) offering that allows a Linux
guest to cooperate with a VM-based tape management system (including all

Any way of getting that to talk to Z/OS in another LPAR?

This just came up here in a different context. Is there some standard
way in Linux to limit the number of incoming connections accepted from
a single IP address.
E.g. allow a desktop to telnet/ssh into a given Linux instance only
once, or twice, or n times. If so, can this limit be applied per
Does anything else work across the hypersockets LAN?

I have some Linux images that are connecting via VCTCA that I want to
change to use IUCV. I update TCP/IP stack under VM and, without
thinking, started to cycle the affected Linux images. I only did two
before I realized that I messed up. I didn't change the Linux
configurations before boot!...
In the listener configuration for DB2 perhaps you need to drop the
specific IP or use '*' ?

During testing I mounted a windows directory via smbmount and then removed
the share on the windows directory.
Now I can not umount the directory nor can I fix it by re-sharing the
windows directory.
There is a mention of the mount timing out in the smbmount man page, but
dont know how to
