UTS as presented to us does indeed contain ned. I just logged in to my
VM/370, DIALled UTS and voila!

It's amazing what they did with 16MB!

Cheers,
Chris.

Talking with the Unix person, he simply like to add systemd.unit=rescue.target

I'm pretty sure they're asking about the ability of using grub itself to change
things, when the grub menu is displayed. If so, then there is supposed to be a
way to do it, but I never really dug into it well enough to figure it out
properly. There are a couple of hints given on the screen about which keys to
use, etc., but after that I wasn't initially able to get any further, and had
to move on to other tasks.

If they're not talking about that, and are asking about using some form of
editor to modify the config file itself, then you're correct. I really wish the
old UTS editor that was made to work with 3270/3215 terminals had been open

You can pass things to grub on the IPL command using the PARM statement. I
just had to do that when I needed to validate a systemd timing problem with a
kernel parm. It's tricky with the lower case stuff.

Is that what you are trying to do?

Unfortunately, the links to older SLES release documentation are meanwhile
broken in

https://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/dw/linux390/lvc/zFCP_Best_Practices-BB-Webcast_201805.pdf#page=55
The new links would be:
https://documentation.suse.com/sles/15-SP4/html/SLES-all/cha-grub2.html#sec-grub2-menu-change
https://documentation.suse.com/sles/15-SP4/html/SLES-all/cha-grub2.html#sec-grub2-zseries
Note that it's quite tricky to use the grub menu editing as we're in a line
mode terminal and the cursor position is not getting drawn, so the SLES docs
suggest to temporarily(!) enter an underscore to see the cursor position, but
one also needs to remove the underscore again with e.g. sending a backspace
escape sequence so grub does not see the underscore which is regular user input
for it.

If they're not talking about that, and are asking about using some form of
editor to modify the config file itself, then you're correct. I really wish the

'ned', which was truly an excellent editor, many XEDIT-like features.

Ironically, UTSGlobal contributed the 3270 full screen driver to Linux.
I guess they thought they'd be able to get revenue from the editor?

I was told that 'ned' on UTS would detect 3270 or ASCII line and
accommodate either. I never used it on an ASCII line, so this is a
second hand report.

But 'ned' on a 3270 was really fantastic.

Re: Edit grub from 3270 console

2023-05-04 Thread Marcy Cortes
You can pass things to grub on the IPL command using the PARM statement. I
just had to do that when I needed to validate a systemd timing problem with a
kernel parm. It's tricky with the lower case stuff.

Is that what you are trying to do?

I'm pretty sure they're asking about the ability of using grub itself to change
things, when the grub menu is displayed. If so, then there is supposed to be a
way to do it, but I never really dug into it well enough to figure it out
properly. There are a couple of hints given on the screen about which keys to
use, etc., but after that I wasn't initially able to get any further, and had
to move on to other tasks.

If they're not talking about that, and are asking about using some form of
editor to modify the config file itself, then you're correct. I really wish the
old UTS editor that was made to work with 3270/3215 terminals had been open
sourced before the company went under, but that never happened.

Re: Edit grub from 3270 console

2023-05-04 Thread Jeffrey Barnard

If you install THE (The Hessling Editor) you can edit this type of file
with full XEDIT compatibility.

I did this recently ...

Boot failure ... Provide root password ...

> cd /etc
> the fstab

entered COMPAT XEDIT XEDIT XEDIT

from there I fixed the problem, saved the file and rebooted.

Problem solved.

Jeff

Victor,

The only options that I can think of are ed and sed. Your Unix people should
know how to use them.
