Same here...

Check your 'inet address' under 'ifconfig ppp0' after you logined.
If the IP is e.g. 128.128.128.5 try pinging other IP's by changing

In my PC I get reply only from these addresses. Hostnames cannot be

I don't know why but I really think there is a problem with the

Besides the (correct) answer, let's learn how to diagnose these
kind of problems. First question is always:
Does my machine ask the correct question and doesn't
get an answer? or maybe the question itself is wrong.
(this would prevent you from searching the coin under

Ethereal (or tcpdump) is your friend here. Simply run it and
in the Capture-Filter write 'port 53'. Than do your test

Hi Clan,

After watching the thread of thoughts expressesed in regard to the JLC
renaming issue, I have decided to take Christoph Bugel's point-of-view:

We shall leave the JLC acronym as-is, but refer to the different OS's with the
due credit in the writing, i.e.:

GNU/Linux for Linux
Free Software for FreeBSD and such, etc.

This way everybody is happy.

OT: VIA C3 in Israel

2003-01-18 Thread Yedidyah Bar-David
Hi all,

Sorry for being off-topic, but I think there are others interested.

I want to make a very quiet PC without paying a lot for the newest
cases that allow that. I thought about buying a VIA C3 and no fan.
Does anyone here have anything to say about this? Such as:
Is it stable?
Is it fast? I know it's not fast compared to the latest P4/Athlons,
but does it have a good price/performance ratio?
Where can I buy it in Israel? I only found with google two places
that sell it, one is GoldTop (which I once bought from), and the
other zed.co.il (which seems to be virtual only - could not find
any real-world address. Does anyone know them?).
Does it have any compatibility problems? It does appear in the
kernel's 'make config'.

One more thing: I currently have a Duron 1200 on a Gigabyte board.
Is it possible to underclock it enough so that I won't need the
fan? How much?

Didi

It is reasonably fast. What do you want it for?

For multimedia stuff it's totally slow (and don't try GNOME on it - it got
some serious problems with GTK and GTK-2. I didn't say it - Alan Cox
mentioned it on redhat's lists). If you're thinking about making a PVR with
it - it's a bad idea.

The Duron 1200Mhz + EliteGroup board combo (non upgradable but got all the
stuff you need for) costs about $90-$100. How much Via C3 costs?

Does it have any compatibility problems? It does appear in the
  kernel's 'make config'.

Via (which got serious problems with their USB [ohci]) does update their
drivers most of the time and is considered Linux friendly hardware vendor..

Thanks,
Hetz

C3 has a very small cache, which impacts the performance to a

doesn't sound relevant to the problem. the 'search' or 'domain' entries
are used just to optimize the queries - not to make them 'correct'.

this addition simply allows partial domain names lookup to work (i.e.
searching for 'foo', which is under the 'bar.net' domain, will work if the
'search bar.net' entry is found in resolv.conf).

thus, i presume this is not going to solve the problem (unless the user
was trying to look up such partial names, and expected this to work
without the 'domain' or 'search' entries).

After reading this comment on signal quality, I decided to try a few more
experiments on the non-functional FlyVideo2000 before buying a new bt8* card.
Since I made some proghress and found real differences between the way the
card works under Linux and Windows, I think this is still, at least
partially, on topic. Here's what I did: Instead of buying a
cable-signal-amplifier as Yedidyah suggested, I hooked the card up to a VCR
and tred it on my machine and my wife's Windows machine. Here are the
results:

Windows:
- Good reception but no colour
- No audio.
- The bundled software allows me to change window size or use as full screen.

Linux:
- After modprobe saa7134 I got an icon on the desk-top and clicking it gave me
an excellent colour picture (as opposed to black-and-white on Windows), so
this is better than Windows.
- Here too there's no audio.
- I can only enlarge the window to about 2/3 of the height and 2/3 of the
width of the screen. Choosing full screen gives me a window of the same size
(not a full screen) on a black background. I tried changing resolution to
640x480 and the TV picture then filled the screen, but this is obviously not
a solution I want to use - I run at 1024x768.

The fact that there's no audio on Windows or Linux led me to believe that
maybe I'd connected someting wrong, but I don't think this is the case since
the FM radio tuner on the card does work (I only tried on Windows, but that
does prove the wires are connected properly).

Any comments on the audio and resolution problems would be appreciated.

TIA

BTW - I also tried Kwintv as an alternative to xawtv, but there were so many
error messages (and no help file), that at the moment, I don't see any point
wasting time on it. The front-end is much more polished than xawtv, but if it
doesn't even detect the TV device, this alpha software is not yet ready. But,
based on good experience with KDE, I think when the bugs get fixed, this will
be a good program.
