BTW: multiple X servers tend to have problems with sound servers.

that distro on a different computer, boot the computer from a
rescue floppy with minimal network support (e.g: Tom's RootBoot) ,
create partitions, and copy the installed system using:
tar clf -. | nc laptop_ip 1
nc -l -p 1 | tar xpf -
(or any similar method)

I know that both sendmail and postfix try to find the host name on
startup. Putting it in /etc/hosts will help
