[Linux-users] GNU/Linux support Weds 7.30pm

2022-02-01 Thread Rik Tindall

Kia ora, hi all, the last of our monthly notices, February 2.

Very sad to announce our monthly meetings will not recommence in 2022.
Re-purposing of the public venue being the main reason. Covid
conditions, very long duration (17 years at the place) and low turnout
contributed too. Thanks everyone for your support of Freenix workshops!

GNU/Linux Users' workshop was: 7.30pm-9.30pm in the South Learning
Centre (SLC) at South Christchurch Library in Cashmere -
https://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/locations/SOUTH/ - held on the
first Wednesday monthly, Feb-Dec.

LiveCD/DVD installs of freenix* operating system distributions were used
to demonstrate alternative desktop environments, in the SLC computer
lab. N.B. USB memory stick thumbdrive boot access was no longer
available.

You can join us online tonight via https://meet.jit.si/freechan with a
backup of https://bbb.nzoss.nz/b/rik-huz-nrm-vmu courtesy of NZOSS -
many thanks.

Kind regards,

Rik Tindall

[Linux-users] GNU/Linux support Weds 7.30pm

2021-11-30 Thread Rik Tindall

Hi all, monthly notice, December 1.

Tonight is the GNU/Linux Users' workshop: 7.30pm-9.30pm in the South
Learning Centre (SLC), through rear door of South Christchurch Library
at 66 Colombo Street, Cashmere -
https://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/locations/SOUTH/ - held on the
first Wednesday monthly, Feb-Dec. N.B. Covid-19 tracing is required, see
rules**

LiveCD/DVD installs of freenix* operating system distributions are used
to demonstrate alternative desktop environments, in the SLC computer
lab. N.B. USB memory stick thumbdrive boot access is no longer
available.

Ubuntu-MATE is the Debian GNU/Linux variant we most display and Long
Term Support releases like 20.04 are recommended, though rolling
upgrades (like October's release 21.10 most recently out) tend to run
fastest with very latest kernel drivers and software incorporated. Both
are up-to-date, secure, and will run well on a lot of ageing equipment
to extend its life. See http://debian.org background and
http://ubuntu-mate.org/download/ for these distros and
http://distrowatch.com for a great many other variants to choose from.
Portable devices welcome, esp. laptops, Android phones etc.

BYO distributions and any new tech you like; overhead projector and
large wall screen - let us know if you have a presentation to offer.

You can join this meeting online via
https://bbb.nzoss.nz/b/rik-huz-nrm-vmu courtesy of NZOSS - many thanks.
Also at https://meet.jit.si/freechan

Drop by for the last time under Level 2. Help decide whether we should
continue under the vaccine passport, traffic light Orange system after
tonight in place for council premises.

Looking forward to seeing you there. Thank you for the support of these
workshops.

Kind regards,

Rik Tindall

Hey Andrew

Thanks for this. You'll probably know Bryce from CLUG-of-old who
attended with the same kind of interest in Dec.

Many of us are of the generation who had live stage activity in our
youth, in the 1980s, that got sidelined by one thing or another. Then
the 1990s hit and the digital revolution transformed very much, like the
music trade and stage performance lighting... So, we're in catch-up mode
now, if we can find the time again.

This thread topic is a back-burner kind of curiosity, to recommence a
learning curve where many analogue devices of the past are tending
towards redundant. Hopefully we entertainment field users are not! lol

So, we find, USB-DMX devices are almost as diverse as the kinds of
digital-LED lighting units on the market today. At the cheaper, direct
import end of the USB-DMX device scale, there's less onboard smarts so
much more difficulty setting up, it appears. As usual, 'you get what you
pay for'. So invest in a ~$70+ piece of proprietary? kit to make life
easier, perhaps.

The manual for https://ftdichip.com/drivers/ shows that GNU/Linux does
get good consideration by some manufacturers, which is so good to see.
But at the ~$20 USB-DMX device level, the control software support is
opaque or complex or absent, whatever platform, at first blush.
Disabling the kernel driver then enabling a replacement module works
fine, but then what? ... How to utilise the enabled ftdichip device? ...

There's no hurry though as the inexpensive DMX lights are easily
programmed and networked in themselves, these days, making for a quite
usable display.

Note, this is DMX-3(pin) gear rather than the true (more expensive)
DMX-5 protocol that is being implemented / worked around. YMMV.

Will persevere, post updates, with next meeting Weds 3 March 7.30pm (as
library is upgrading lab next month).

Stay cool everyone!

Regards

Rik

[Linux-users] GNU/Linux support Weds 7.30pm

2020-11-30 Thread Rik Tindall

Hi all, monthly notice, Dec 2.

Wednesday night is the GNU/Linux Users' workshop: 7.30pm-9.30pm in the
South Learning Centre (SLC), through rear door of South Christchurch
Library at 66 Colombo Street, Cashmere -
https://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/locations/SOUTH/ - held on the
first Wednesday monthly, Feb-Dec. N.B. Covid-19 tracing app QR-code is
at all council public facilities.

LiveCD/DVD/thumbdrive installs of freenix* operating system
distributions are used to demonstrate alternative desktop environments,
in the SLC computer lab of i5, all-in-one, touchscreen PCs.

Ubuntu-MATE is the Debian GNU/Linux variant we most display and Long
Term Support releases like 20.04 are recommended, though rolling
upgrades (like 20.10, October release) tend to run fastest with very
latest kernel drivers and software incorporated. Both are up-to-date,
secure, and will run well on a lot of ageing equipment to extend its
life. See http://debian.org background and
http://ubuntu-mate.org/download/ for these distros and
http://distrowatch.com for a great many other variants to choose from.
Portable devices welcome, esp. laptops, Android phones etc.

BYO distributions and any new tech you like; overhead projector / large
screen - let us know if you have a presentation to offer.

Thanks to NZOSS support through ChristchurchTech meetup group, we offer
a Big Blue Button online connection to our meeting:
https://bbb.nzoss.nz/b/rik-huz-nrm-vmu

We hope to see you there. Thank you for the support of these workshops.

Could you please come around to see me
and to help me to debug the issues I have
with my laptop.

I reinstalled Ubuntu GNU/Linux in an attempt
to get su ... exit online, but I found out
that sudo apt install works
just fine.

My issues are as follows:
(1) Scrolling the screen has slowed down dramatically.
(2) My USB stick drives are not working anymore.
(3) The mouse doesn't work.

Because my USB stick doesn't work I
am reluctant to re-install Linux by reformatting
my hard drive as I am unable to save my
work.

Tomorrow night is the GNU/Linux Users' workshop: 7.30pm-9.30pm in the
South Learning Centre (SLC), through rear door of South Christchurch
Library at 66 Colombo Street, Cashmere -
https://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/locations/SOUTH/ - held on the
first Wednesday monthly, Feb-Dec.

LiveCD/DVD/thumbdrive installs of freenix* operating system
distributions are used to demonstrate alternative desktop environments,
in the SLC computer lab of i5, all-in-one, touchscreen PCs.

Ubuntu-MATE is the Debian GNU/Linux variant we most display and Long
Term Support releases like 18.04 are recommended, though rolling
upgrades (19.10 is latest, October release) tend to run fastest with
very latest kernel drivers and software incorporated. Both are
up-to-date, secure, and will run well on a lot of aged equipment to
extend its life.

Thank you for the support of these workshops and the Software Freedom
Day annual installfest event.

Kind regards,

Rik Tindall

2019-11-26 Thread Davin Pearson
Here is a doozy of a problem for you:

Why is my Windows drive read only? It wasn't this way when
I was playing with it last night.

Here is the clipped output the command df:

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 249529340 -202714420 452243760- /media/www/Windows

Why does it report a negative size for the amount used?

Is this related to the problem about my Windows Hard Drive being in
read only mode?

I tried to run fsck but it gives the following output:

root@davinpearson:/home/www# fsck /dev/sda2
fsck from util-linux 2.31.1

Hi Robert, Roger and All,

Thank you, the invite for presentations is a standing one. We've had
just a few, on Linux.conf then arduino a few years back. But the turnout
is small (range 1-8), helps newbies fix stuff and mostly is informal
discussion of open source industry news, distros etc.

So those attending this evening will choose a way forward and let you
know plan.

drivers and software incorporated. Both are up-to-date, secure, and will
run well on a lot of old equipment to extend its life. See
http://debian.org background and http://ubuntu-mate.org/download/ for
these distros and http://distrowatch.com for a great many others to
choose from. Portable devices welcome, esp. laptops.

BYO distributions and any new tech as you like; overhead projector -
let us know if you have a presentation to offer.

Noting interest in https://linux.conf.au - "The Linux of Things"
conference, 21-25 Jan'19, University of Canterbury, Chch NZ -
registrations open.

Noting also our local workshop now runs twice monthly, same venue and
time, with the third Tuesday night monthly focused on Android Linux
phone etc management (next is 21 Aug.)

Thank you for the support of this workshop and the Software Freedom Day

Re: [Linux-users] GNU/Linux support Weds 7.30pm

2018-07-18 Thread Rik Tindall

Hello All,

Aftermatch report for ALPS (Android Linux Phone Support) group last
night.

1. This effort doubled the size of the average GNU/Linux workshop,
though admittedly one was asleep in a pram :)

2. We settled on the third Tuesday night monthly, 7.30pm-9.30pm in the
South Learning Centre lab - next is on 21 August, now booked.

3. Modding Android phones will become the shared hobby of an ALPS core,
and 100% synchronicity was revealed in that www.postmarketos.org from
www.alpinelinux.org is the direction we are traveling for the software
tools.

4. www.android-x86 8.1 (Oreo) rc1 worked really well on the lab PC,
with a great built-in terminal emulator, picking up ethernet but unable
to dial out (though it really wanted to); lesson #1 is all of the gmail
/ google registration / location etc that it is trying to extract,
before you can get a clear 'desktop' for work: a really searchy engine!

5. A very odd 'missing txts' between a Spark Android and a Vodaphone
Nokia user was tested then referred on to the individuals' service
providers - any other suggestions here?

6. More synchronicity, as on the way home, Android just became huge in
the news (holding 75% of the European phone market):

http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/morningreport/audio/2018654276/google-fined-4-point-3b-by-eu

7. There is definite demand for deeper experience with (GNU and) Linux
ICT operating systems, so the ALPS team will press on. New participants
very welcome.

Reminder, next GNU/Linux workshop is Weds 1 August, 7.30pm-9.30pm in
the SLC lab.

Thank you for all the support in coordinating these two user groups.

Re: [Linux-users] GNU/Linux support Weds 7.30pm

2018-07-17 Thread Rik Tindall

Reminder for ALPS first meeting tonight.

This is reiteration of a previous attempt at Android Linux user
support, at the library venue, that got moved and became generic
cellphone user support / education, then petered out.

We will be temporarily turning an all-in-one PC into an overgrown
Android tablet, using an android-x86 LiveCD, and exploring the Linux
internals as best possible. We will look at GNU/Linuxy alternatives to
Android, for hand-held ICT devices/phones, also.

Externally, we will run Ubuntu-MATE LiveDVDs on other PCs for
comparison and definite internet, and provide the standard GNU/Linux
Users' support too (as per the first Wednesday night monthly).

All welcome. See you soon.
