my GSoC project now goes deeply into the phase of working with lts.conf. We
decided to provide the user with some common tasks to add for his TCs. So the
user doesn't need to pick the variables, but can choose common

How exactly do you install new software to be used on the clients? I
THOUGHT you did a chroot, apt-get, then ltsp-image-update, however
apt-get reports it can't resolve host.

LTSP-5 in Ubuntu doesn't use NFS.
And, you've already got the login screen, so you are way past the the
point where the root filesystem gets mounted.
I think that you've hit a known problem in Ubuntu 8.04.
The problem has been fixed.
