0.8.1 first, then 0.7.8. Don't know if it will solve kernel problem
but we will know if new image has problem that did not exist on 0.7.8.

After trying above package ..

rpm --Uvh --force to 0.8.1:
- the PC that previously work normally, now can not login to LTSP with error.
Network module: failed to load network module!
- the PC that previously not work, came with same error
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount fs on unknown-block (3,1)

rpm -Uvh --force to 0.7.8:
- the PC that previously work normally, now already can login to LTSP.
- the PC that previously not work, came with diferent error.
Unpacking initramfs ... 0 Kernel panic - now syncing: bad gzip magic numbers

Fiuuuhh.. I don't know what to do now :(

Is it because my client using Intel Pentium III ?

[Ltsp-discuss] [kiwi-ltsp] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount fs on unknown-block (3, 1)

2010-01-10 Thread Donny Christiaan
Dear Expert,

I've sucessfully installed OpenSuse Li-f-e 11.2.
Some client can boot over network and login to LTSP.

But I have some problem with some CPU that can not booting to Login window.

The error is:

VFS: Cannot open root device NULL or unknown-block (3,1)
Please append a correct root= boot option; here are the available partitions
DEBUG_BLOCK_EXT_DEVT is enabled, you need to specify explicit textual
name for root= boot option.

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount fs on unknown-block (3,1)

After that the computer became Freezee and the Caps Lock Led and
Scroll Lock Led blinking.

Plesae your advise since some of my staff can not work :(

Thanks,
Donny Christiaan.

From OpenSuse 10.3 to OpenSuse 11.1 without re-install but upgrade it

I'm using LTSP 4.2u2.

Does anybody have done this before?
Is it safe for me ? :)

 Hi

Most likely reason is X did not configure properly. Try adding
USE_SAX=true in /srv/tftpboot/KIWI/lts.conf and boot again. How much
 RAM does the client have?

Hi J,

See u again :)

I'll try to add USE_SAX and will let u know :)
My client's RAM are 1G ...

Just wanna know, are there any minimum RAM requirement for KIWI-LTSP client?

 11.0 i586 DVD in /mnt/11.0 and run kiwi-ltsp-setup -s.
 - Fixed the issue with /etc/group not updating properly for local app
 (thanks jpdrawneek)
 - Added dosbox package in kiwi-ltsp-prebuilt image, this would be
useful for everyone who is using dosbox to work with serial ports and
 any other work

Updated many wiki pages, check out:

 http://en.opensuse.org/Category:LTSP

To keep your packages up to date, from yast software management module
select openSUSE:Tools repository, right click in package section all
in this list Update if newer available. Repeat the same for
 server:ltsp repository.

Easy-LTSP GUI for LTSP is feature complete, please make use of that to
 configure the thin client behavior.

In other news, Sugar - OLPC XO's interface is now available for
 openSUSE 11.0, more information here:

 http://dev.compiz-fusion.org/~cyberorg/2008/08/28/sugared-opensuse-tour/

I have tested it with LTSP, it has few basic applications available
for now, more can be installed using xo-get package manager GUI,
spread some sweetness and let us know your feedback.

 Have a lot of fun...

really, it is not that hard to make kiwi a backend like all other
distros do with their build tools (anaconda for redhat, debootstrap and
a set of metapackages for ubuntu and debian, stage1 and emerge for
 gentoo)

you have the necessary plugins for kiwi in place in the upstream code,
using teh plugin system to seed kiwi variables with the common system we
all use (and can help with in support) would be a first step ... its
great that you use kiwi but i'm 100% sure you can as well use it as a
backend like all of us do and work with the common plugins so people are
not lost and have to be sent to #kiwi if the are asking for support.

Yes, to keep it common we have a SUSE plugin already in place, it is
 fully functional as it is.

Hopefully someone who is familiar with how KIWI works would always be
around, that is not going to come in way of helping users as LTSP
still is the same. I always respond to any queries posted on mailing
lists, I am also always idling in #ltsp, refer to IRC logs if someone
has pinged me and respond if they are online.

contributes to. i know that japerry showed interest to help getting the
suse side in shape to function in a proper upstream way so lets sit down
together and develop a plan how to do it so we dont have one distro that
doesnt fit the scheme and users can get proper support ... its really
not that hard to just change the order of the scripts to wrap around
kiwi and use all the distro independent variables and options instead of
 kiwi wrapping around the scripts.

Japerry, gbolte have always been very keen to help, and even made it
to the LTSP hackfest. They too are openSUSE community members and not
 developers.

the BTS hackfest in november should be a very good opportunity to do it,
how about sending one person there and getting suse in shape ? i'm hapy
to help with that if needed and i know the other distro devs would too
for teh ske of having something thats similar over all distros ...

I had requested Guy Lunardi to send someone for the hackfest, which
did not materialise, so also requested Zonker to send someone over,
but it was too late. It is upto the powers that be at Novell/SUSE to
make it possible, again Zonker would be the best person to get it
 done.

Please be assured that we are not on the opposing sides, we just
want LTSP5 working very well and are deploying tools that are most
familiar and efficient for us without having to code. Wrapping
everything we do with kiwi in LTSP plugin has been done, it would take
a proper developer to do more.

 Cheers

 Yes, but... remeber this?

However, I'll state on the record that, as for myself, I've abandoned
 working on LTSP 4.2,
and am working on making LTSP5 better. That's what's going to make it
into SuSE, and Fedora when the porting efforts are done, and that's what's
in Debian and Ubuntu today. It doesn't make any sense for me to spend
 time on the old one.

 Scott

 http://www.mail-archive.com/ltsp-discuss@lists.sourceforge.net/msg32515.htm
 l

So LTSP 4.2 is just outdated and even worst - nobody do anything (as a
developer) for it anymore - I myself found that hard way, too.

Bad thing is that you find it fully integrated only on the Debian or
Ubuntu, here is my Wiki page (in finnish) for Edubuntu 7.10 - everything
just works - because this one is screencast sound do not work on the
 screencast, but in real yes:

 http://www.arkki.info/howto/Wiki/LTSP5/Edubuntu_Tyopoyta.ogg
 http://wiki.ubuntu-fi.org/Edubuntu_7.10_Classroom_Server

And here is my Wiki page for coming Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 - everything is
already working (TCM, Gnash, Sound, USB-sticks and so on) - this one is
 Alternate Alpha 4:

 http://wiki.ubuntu-fi.org/Ubuntu_8.04_Alternate_%28x86_64%29

So best options are here, I think:

 openSuSE 10.3 + LTSP42
 or
 Ubuntu 7.10/8.04LTS + LTSP5

 It's your choice like always.

It is easy to take an ubuntu /opt/ltsp and drop it into SuSE10.3. Rather than
the native SuSE TCs (which is the kiwi WIP)
 Ummm easy, but not trivial
 James

Guyzz

Thanks a lot for your suggestion ..

I'll try OpenSuse 10.3 + LTSP 4.2
also I'll try KIWI-LTSP ..

Wish me luck ..

- SAPGUI (Java)

Regarding information from
http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/ServerSizing that the terminal
client will consume 50Mb of the server memory.

When I run fl_teachertool it show that one user used around 300 - 400 Mb
  is it okay?

the top looks like (with 3 user connected from 3 terminal):

Swap: 7241720k total,0k used, 7241720k free, 899956k cached

I've planned to use this server for 15 - 20 users, Is it still okay? or
I have to add more Memory ( upgrade it to 8 G) ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

I've planned to use this server for 15 - 20 users, Is it still okay? or
I have to add more Memory ( upgrade it to 8 G) ?

When more than one user use same program the memory space does not
increase. Right now on my network there are 26 unique users and gives
 this:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ last|grep still|uniq|wc -l
 26
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ free -m
  total used free sharedbuffers cached

 Swap: 956 0956

So go ahead you should not have any problems. Only sites with heavy
flash may be problem but I doubt it.

Hi Sudev,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

here are my status:

Raid-1 is usually better in software. You don't need to have a spare
controler card, you can balance I/O on many cards, and if you have a
problem, you can get your datas online easily on any linux box.

I also prefer software raid as you can get problem messages without
much setup. AFAIK in case of hardware raid you also need to ensure
that the software for raid messages / monitoring is available in your
O/S. Not many vendors come out with Linux support and you get messages
 only in BIOS log.

Hi Sudev,

What about if I use 4x250Gb (SATA-II) and I would like to use Software
RAID-5 ?

Is it recomended for LTSP server ? I'll use k12ltsp-6.

Thanks a lot .

AFAIK no problem. SATA or SCSI will depend on number of concurrent
 users and applications being run.

Ok then, I'll try to install the server with Soft RAID-5 ..

in fullscreen mode, turn off all window decorations, Kicker, applets and
keyboard shortcuts. Web browser has only few buttons, no menu, no address

ltspinfo -h=wsxxx --shutdown) 5 minutes before library closing time.

Another 4 terminals have less limited environment. People use them for web
browsing in search of scientifical materials, for simple wordprocessing
[Ctrl+C - Ctrl+V ;)] and for printing some documents. These four machines
 are using KDE too.

It would be great to automagically send some messages to logged in clients,
especially at the end of day. Let's say library closes at 7pm. I want to
inform people standing before terminals' screens at 6:45pm with some dialog
window that they should end their work because terminals will shut down in
 10
minutes. I want do it with cron and native KDE's 'kdialog' preferably. I'm
not sitting in front of terminal server, but control it with SSH session.

 How can I make it?

Yes. As many posts inn the past have indicated LTSP5 uses ssh
tunnelling and this places load on client end.
LTSP5 in Gutsy, via the LDM_DIRECTX parameter, allows you to bypass the
SSH tunnelling, resulting in identical performance.

 Scott

I have been using LDM_DIRECTX under Feisty and the speed has been great. We
 have 108
clients and have not had a single complaint on speed once booted (or during
 boot for
that matter). If you are comparing boot times and logout times, Ubuntu is
 slower.
However they have done a lot of work to fix this in gutsy. I'm sure Scott
 could
verify/expand on this, otherwise just know once booted with DIRECTX it is
 just as fast.

 Jim

[Ltsp-discuss] Shutdown Button

2007-10-05 Thread Donny Christiaan
Dear All,

I've used K12LTSP-6 for trial but I can't find Shutdown Button in the
login screen like Ubuntu 7.04 does.

Can I set K12LTSP to display the shutdown button so my user can simply
click on that button to shutdown their terminal instead of push the
power button on the CPU for 3-seconds (ATX).

Btw, can I shutdown remotely my client's terminal?

Thanks a lot for your help.

 Hi David,

Thanks a lot for your valued reply. If you don't mind, can you send the
  information of your server specification?
What Distro do you use for LTSP Server?
I think I'll change my plan from Ubuntu 7.04 to K12LTSP-6
I hope it will support my future RAID Controller :)
I've tried connect(ing SAPGUI) from 1 WinXP (1 IP) with multiple
 login and it work well

Yes, we use Opterons in our servers. Here is an example server for 20
 users:
  Two (2) Dual-Core AMD Opteron 2214
  6 GB RAM
3Ware SATA RAID card with BBU
  Red Hat Enterprise 5, Centos 5, or K12LTSP 6.

Hi Dave,

Wow ... thanks again for the GREAT infomartion ..
btw, what is your MotherBard brand/type ?

Maybe I'll buy the same one with yours :) ..

What distro do you use for the Server?

 2. I've had great results with 3ware's 9000 series SATA RAID
controllers. They are very fast, have an optional battery backup that
will keep unwritten data in the cache alive even if there is a complete
power failure, and 3ware has been very easy to work with.
3ware is my preferred controller. a 4 port with raid 10 gives you very
 good performance. as distribution i use opensuse ( 10.2 ) . don't know
how far the ltsp 5 integration is, but meanwhile ltsp 4.2 works
 perfectly on these distro

I've changed my plan from Ubuntu 7.04 to K12LTSP-6 :) because I think
K12LTSP faster than Feisty (CMIIW) :)

2007-10-01 Thread Donny Christiaan
Dear All,

We are going to setup a new LTSP Server for our company.
There will be around 10-20 terminals connect to this server, running
default application below:
- SAP GUI
- OpenOffice.org
- Evolution (Mail Client)

I need your suggestion about Hardware Specification that fit our needs,
We are also plan to have RAID-1 or RAID-5 on this server for reliability.

We plan to buy new low-end branded Server (IBM/Dell/HP/etc) for this
LTSP Server, which server are compatible with Ubuntu 7.04 because We
will use Ubuntu 7.04 on the LTSP Server or do you guys have any
suggestion for the Distro? What about K12LTSP ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

[Ltsp-discuss] Monitor problem (Samsung SyncMaster 591sg)

2007-04-25 Thread Donny Christiaan
Dear All,

I have problem with one of my terminal.

I've used Samsung SyncMaster 591sg
(http://www.samsung.com/id/products/monitor/crt/591sg.asp) but it can
not work on my terminal. It goes blank everytime I start the terminal
but I can go to console mode (shell) using Ctrl+Alt+F2. I thought this
is frequency problem (IMHO) ..

Samsung SyncMaster 591sg Spec:
Horizontal 30~55kHz
Vertical50~120Hz

What is the best lts.conf should I use so my monitor can operate well.

I'm using OpenSuse 10.1 + LTSP 4.2u2

Thanks for your help.

No idea. You probably have to experiment. If I have a stubborn monitor
 then I use this:

 [old-monitor]
 X_HORZSYNC  = 29.29-49.31
 X_VERTREFRESH   = 59.93-75

The numbers are from the VESA spec. I have another config which is even
more conservative which I can look up tomorrow if you want it.

Hi Josh,

Thanks for your reply, I'll try this configuration ...

Very briefly I would describe solution as :

For 20 clients one server is sufficient with rough specs like : dual
core processor / 64bit processor and 4gb RAM SCSI drive x2

If you want to run two servers I would suggest that you run them as
master salve server so that if one goes down the other keeps the
services running. LTSP wiki describes how to run DHCP server in master
 slave setup.

Thanks for this usefull link for me ...

Also the home directories should be kept in server1 and backed up /
mirrored on server2. In normal situation server2 should mount home
over NFS and the mirror is only used when NFS mount fails due to
 server1 going down.

I planed not to use master-slave server because each user only have
access to 1(one) server ... server1 or srever2 ...

Let me try the wiki ways :)
and i'll be back if i have problem :)

Donny Christiaan.

Dear Expert,

I would like to use Windows XP for my clients, is it possible?

I've try to use rdesktop to connect to Windows XP but it can not more

What should I do to make it work for more than one user?
Do I need to run Windows 2000 Terminal Service?

Your help very valueble for me.

Dear Nadav,

What kind of Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit Switch do you use?
May I know the brand type?

You'll find a little overview here:

 http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/ServerSizing#10mbit_100mbit_Gigabi

It recommends gigabit from the server to the switch, while 100Mb is
sufficient from the switch to clients. But, of course, it depends on
your load and usage patterns, too.

p.s. I am not an expert, though.
