2010-02-15 Thread Jo Gerb

Ok, i built up an old System with Pentium (i don't know if II or IV,
360 MHz) and 128 MBytes of RAM. It Takes very Long to boot and it
First seems like the pc wouldnt respond any more, but about 10 minutes
with Black screen you can see the panel and the Cursor- no Desktop and
no icons there. I didnt realize the arrow-Symbol to be the One for
network, maybe we should use another one. The System itself is
extremely slow, but thats the hardware (im just used to my 4gb RAM:-))
maybe we could use something else for the graphics , like kolourpaint
or so. The People we aim at are used to ms paint, and what we offer
them in lubuntu is too complicated. Ill go on in testing and ill write
again later. Have a nice time, Jo

It is simply plymouth (yeah Fedora invented it and Ubuntu is now
using it too). Seeing only the blue bar is a indicator that your
graphicscard is not supported well enough.
In the final version nvidia (thx to nouveau) ati (open ati driver)

Other than that, I like it, running it in a VBOX with 384 RAM,
everything seems snappy. Will do further testing and post any bugs I

Hi,

I just created a new testing ISO. This is not an Alpha, but just a

Like others Alpha, you should be aware that it's not considered
stable,

see warnings for Lucid Alpha :

"Pre-releases of Lucid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a
stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional,

frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu

Changes seen the Alpha 2 :
* Main changes in the seed :
 - chromium for the browser
 - gnome-mplayer for the videos
 - network-manager for the network
* New artwork made by Rafael Laguna. It's not the final theme, but
it's
quite complete, so we can test with a non standard artwork. And I

it :)
* A new session (Lubuntu-Netbook), which launched lxlauncher. You
need
to logout, select Lubuntu-Netbook session instead of Lubuntu, and
enter

login "ubuntu" without password.

Known bugs:
* pcmanfm2 is not the default filemanager yet, it need more
integration

to be usable. It is still available by using "pcmanfm2"
* If you test on a USB, the first screen will freeze for a moment

you click on "Try Lubuntu ...". Just wait, it will continue as
normal.

There was not really a thread about games. I just said that maybe the
People who will use lubuntu wont have Internet at all, and Even if
they have a (slowly) connection, they wont know how to install games.
So no matter how many games there are available, they wont play them.
If we put one or too small Games into lubuntu, these people would
thank us . I thought about sth like minesweeper and snake, maybe also
a cardsgame'

To the colours: of course there are other distributions with green,
and maybe also some with lxde. But lubuntu wont Be a Small
Distribution with lxde, it will become an official ubuntu derivat . We
should concentrate on that fact and just see the logos and colours of
the other officially ubuntubased distributions such As xubuntu and
kubuntu. Both of them are Blue. And lubuntu: i don't like purple.
Green would fit into the philsophy of lubuntu and lxde: Not needing
many Ressources, you can use your old computer and don't have to buy a
New one. I would keep on green.

its just that lubuntuusers wont have to buy a new computer, they can still
use their old one (good for our planet). Lubuntu needs less ressources than
other distributions. lxde is leightweight, and i dont know, but i associate
that with green. like a flower or a tree that can grow on a little piece of
earth with some water and some light not needing much more, lubuntu will be
usable on (almost) every hardware.

I think its not that important if the program is simple. The people
who want to format a Partition of their hdd should get gparted cause
with that they have all possibilities. And people who don't Know what
they are doing shouldnt use the program, otherwise they would just do
sth wrong and erase some data or so. But how to keep These users away
from the program? We all know that a simple warning- sign would Be
ignored. I think if the program looks complicated, many People just
Close the window.
Of course this is not the best thing, but with gparted we would give
the users who know what they do a great hddtool, and we could also
keep the others from causing any damage on their data.

So what do you think?

download gparted from repositories - because anyone who will look

Not sure we will include games, well I didn't find good idea/example

another quick test: the alpha runs great, fast and quite stable. Some
problems with pcmanfm2 , but its still in developement so thats okay (for

[Lubuntu-desktop] Games

2010-02-26 Thread Jo Gerb
Hey team,

We should think about the games in Lubuntu. I think that with a little
cards-game (like solitaire) and a reaction-game (like snake) most of our
users would be happy. Maybe we also could add a little puzzle-game and
something like Space Invaders, but we have to remember that there's not that
much free space left. We now have to choose some good games with no or just
some dependencies that run fast on old hardware. Do you have any ideas?

We have to remember that lubuntu will be used on old hardware and the

3. make chromium to use the window border of the theme instead of

Good idea.

hm, thats difficult. when i first saw mtpaint, i really thought it was too
complicated and yes, even a bit ugly. But working with it is great and using

MT paint +1.

I think that might not be a bad idea, as long as they are kept

An icon on the desktop 'About Lubuntu' or something?

aren't there some tutorials on the ubuntu livecd? I never watched

want to try if they find everything without help. 10 mb more to
download makes a really long time with a slow Internet connection.
But anyway, we should make these tutorials: if the others vote for
including them, we should include them - but I could also imagine a
special startpage for chromium that has a big button "new to lubuntu?"

I have to say that I don't like the new design, and I'm sure that many
users think the way I do. But we will all get used to it and we can't
change it, so I'll just accept it. The important thing is that lubuntu
and it's design will fit into canonicals ideas. If that's the case,
I'm okay with the new design.

Yes, we're working on it. Canonical official anouncement was
released yesterd and surprised a lot. So Lubuntu really is an Ubuntu
family product we need to match the visual elements according to
some corporative recommendations under the graphic design manuals.

I'm in contact with branding people, waiting for colour and other
graphic specifications. Don't care, Lubuntu will be released
according Canonical's normatives.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu on ARM devices

2010-03-14 Thread Jo Gerb
I love the idea. At the moment I'm looking for a little netbook with
arm CPU ( you know these little things imported from china, with 266
MHz CPU and 128 mb ram), and as soon as one of these pcs is less than
50€ on eBay, I'll buy one. I would love to test lubuntu on that
device, but actually I don't have the time for doing it all by myself.
If someone wrote a howto, man, that would be awesome.

If this could become an individual project, we should make a new
mailing list .

Hi guys,

I was just wondering - since ultra-lightweightness :) - will there be
an ARM compilation of lubuntu? or more likely - just a way to compile
it by self and being able to use all the system's functionality? I
just got the idea that if lubuntu handles easily old and modern low
end/energy efficient hardware (like netbooks) - could it run on hi-end
mobile devices (MID and smartphone) like HTC TOUCH pro II, etc? I
believe that the hardware efficiency should be enough to handle
lubuntu - and it would allow access to a very large repository of
software to be usable on the phone - the only problem would be that it
would just lack the pure phone service, drivers and software... but
still, personally I'd give it a shot, if I knew how to compile a
system for ARM devices.

AND, of course, there will be some regular netbooks based on ARM
(tegra?) hardware, and since netbook is quite popular idea of where to
use lubuntu - why not also non-x86 netbooks?

I know that there is an ARM compilation of ubuntu and there is going
to be made something similar to UNR for ARMs. so is it possible to use
that ARM kernel and lubuntu-desktop package, or is it a bad idea?

I'm not talking about any official thing for lucid release - more of
an unofficial tip with HOWTO, that maybe would become new unofficial
branch of lubuntu in far away future. what do you think?

best regards, Kuba

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] When will we have Lubuntu 10.04 beta 2?

2010-04-11 Thread Jo Gerb
i think because we are not in the ubuntu-family yet we dont have to bring a
beta2 when ubuntu releases one. We should take the time, include some more
programs (such as games) and release it when its ready. Even if the first
lubuntu is not an official *buntu, it should be a great, well tested distro.
In my opinion, we dont have to follow the canonical timetable that strict.

Hi,

as promised I've had a chat with a very nice man regarding Lubuntu
and the main ubuntu support forum. I see that we have two options
available:

1) A Lubuntu 'tag' much the same as the xubuntu / kubuntu etc. tags
work

2) A separate sub-forum.

#1 is the easier one to achieve as #2 has the problems of the mods
then having to herd stuff from the general area onto the lubuntu
area. If you feel that #1 is un-satisfactory you may ask the Forum
Council to discuss it at the next meeting but
"I do not think we have a separate xubuntu or kubuntu section, so
good luck with that =)"

was the reply.

I hope I have not exceeded what I said I would do in 'asking
around' but, for the lubuntu tag I got
"I will ask the rest of the staff re: lubuntu tag, should be easy
(I hope)"

Personally, I'd prefer the lubuntu tag rather than us being hidden
away in some dark corner of the forum, it will encourage people to
read about lubuntu & hopefully try it out. As always, your views on
the two options are needed.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu games

2010-05-02 Thread Jo Gerb
Hm, I think that the completeness of lubuntu is quite important. We
also aim at people who own an old computer and just want to write some
letters and emails. Of course it's no problem for us to install games
to our pc with lubuntu, but these people won't know how to do that.
They will look for a 'games' section in the menu, and because there
isn't such a section they will think that there are no games for
lubuntu. Ok, there are hundreds of great games in the repos, but what
if the users who never really worked with a pc won't ever look in the
repos or even install something from there?
We don't need many games. We already had the topic, I think we agreed
on one tetrisclone (tint?) one game with cards and maybe also xinv3d.
They are lightweight, have no dependencies and are just some kb afaik.
The people who use lubuntu for a server know how to remove the games
if they don't want them, but many others wouldn't know how to add them
if we didn't include them in the final distro. So in my opinion it's
clear: two or three little games and everone will be happy :-)

Best regards,
Jo

I think that games are a very personal thing. One should have the
games he likes (for example, I installed Extreme Tux Racer and
Wormux), not a set of pre-defined games that he may or may not like.
And since Lubuntu aims for low-end machines, servers in which the
owner wants a graphic environment, and the like, maybe we should let
the user what games he wants or doesn't want.

A small suggestion, checked out the forum and understand the
considerations for and against having default games installed viz...
o not too 'weighty' to weigh down the lubuntu distro
o need to have some games to show 'completeness' of lubuntu.
May I suggest fltk1.1-games as a pre-installed game base?
It is small, quite fun to play? (I don't really know, not a games
type

of guy), but at least, it's something.
