[lubuntu-users] XscreenSaver

2017-07-17 Thread Eric Bradshaw

?? ???

Howz about to add Xscreensaver as default lock screen in Lubuntu natively?!

?? ???,

A. DEACTIVATE NATIVE LUBUNTU SCREEN LOCKING
1. Go to Menu --> Preferences --> Default applications for LXSession
The database will show it's updating
2. Click the Autostart tab, scroll down and uncheck Screen Locker
3. Click the Core applications tab, scroll down to Lock Screen Manager
4. Delete lxlock and "X" out of LXSession configuration
5. Go to Menu --> Preferences --> Power Manager
6. Click the Security tab, uncheck Lock screen when system is going to
sleep and click the "X Close" button
7. Go to Menu --> System Tools --> LXTerminal (or Ctrl+Alt+T) and type:
sudo apt-get remove light-locker -y

8. Type: sudo apt-get autoremove -y
9. Reboot
You may now use XScreenSaver.

B. INSTALL XSCREENSAVER
and lots of related goodies at once:
sudo apt-get install xscreensaver xscreensaver-gl-extra
xscreensaver-data-extra xscreensaver-screensaver-bsod -y

C. AUTOSTART XSCREENSAVER
1. Go to Menu --> Preferences --> Default applications for LXSession,
2. Choose the Autostart panel
3. Type in the text box for Manual autostarted applications:
xscreensaver -no-splash then click the + Add button.
Lock your screen by simply checking the box and setting the number of
minutes you'd like XScreenSaver to wait before doing so.

D. LOCK SCREEN AUTOMATICALLY
Require a password to login
1. Go to Menu --> System Tools --> LXTerminal (or Ctrl+Alt+T) and type
(or copy and paste): sudo leafpad /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

A small file controls this in LightDM

[SeatDefaults]
autologin-guest=false
autologin-user=yourusername
autologin-user-timeout=0
autologin-session=lightdm-autologin

2. Comment-out [add "#" in front of] the user lines

[SeatDefaults]
autologin-guest=false
#autologin-user=yourusername
#autologin-user-timeout=0
autologin-session=lightdm-autologin

3. Save, "X" out and reboot
To auto-login again; follow the same directions above, but take away the
"#" marks in lightdm.conf and save.

E. LOCK SCREEN WITH A KEY COMBO
Use the "Super" (Windows key) and "L" keys to lock the screen.

1. Open home/username/ and go to View --> Show Hidden (or Ctrl+H)
2. Find and double-click .config
3. Find and double-click openbox
4. The only file inside is lubuntu-rc.xml
5. Right-click the file and Open With Leafpad
6. Copy the text below:

xscreensaver-command -lock

7. Press [Ctrl]+[F] and look for keyboard
8. Place the I-bar on the beginning of the line below
and paste
9. Finally, go to Menu --> System Tools --> LXTerminal (or Ctrl+Alt+T)
and type (or copy and paste): openbox --reconfigure

Now, your screen will lock whenever you press the "Super" and "L" keys.

Eric

God Bless You,

Also posting from above:

Not sure why these posts from 2016 came out in recent digest, but I would
support Nio & Aere's request for continuing to support i386 development, in
comparison to PPC, where it might be said that there aren't that many
machines, I would assume that there are quite a few extant PC's that are
still being used . . . around the world, and so having access to a
supported OS should be "viable" and therefore, helpful . . . .

Hi,

no, it's a user list, but actually Lubuntu is an Ubuntu flavour, so a
lot of questions might reach more people, when sending a request to
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users .

"What is this list for?

ubuntu-users is a mailing list staffed by volunteer community members
to provide technical support to Ubuntu Users.

Users of Ubuntu and officially supported derivatives (Kubuntu,
Edubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu) can get support here. Users of derivatives
(such as Backtrack and Linux Mint) are not officially supported." -
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuUsersListFAQ#FAQ1

Some domains have got individual mailing lists that don't belong to a
distro, if you e.g. need help with Linux audio, consider to join
https://lists.linuxaudio.org/listinfo/linux-audio-user . If it's
related to another domain, you much likely would get a pointer on the
Ubuntu mailing list.

Btw. a lot of us are editing Linux Wikis, including Ubuntu Wikis. It's
a little bit disrespectful to ignore this work and to whine on a
mailing list without an actual request.

"Before You Ask

Before asking a technical question by e-mail, or in a newsgroup, or on
a website chat board, do the following:

Try to find an answer by searching the archives of the forum or
mailing list you plan to post to.

Try to find an answer by searching the Web.

Try to find an answer by reading the manual.

Try to find an answer by reading a FAQ.

Try to find an answer by inspection or experimentation.

Try to find an answer by asking a skilled friend.

If you're a programmer, try to find an answer by reading the source
code.

When you ask your question, display the fact that you have done these
things first; this will help establish that you're not being a lazy
sponge and wasting people's time. Better yet, display what you have
learned from doing these things. We like answering questions for people
who have demonstrated they can learn from the answers." -
http://www.catb.org/esr/faqs/smart-questions.html#before

This is not a paid support. It's possible to pay for a distro and to get
support. My first Linux was "Suse Linux professional 9.0" "student
version". I wasn't a "student", I was jobless, so they anyway sold me
the price reduced version. It costs 49,95 EUR and came with two books,
a user manual and an admin manual. The support did not include
everything! It's the same for Apple and Microsoft, they provide
support for their products and not for all the available software.

Nobody is forced to use Linux for free as in beer. If you expect the
help you are used to by paid support, then pay for support.

Btw. in my experiences mailing lists and Wikis and other gratis manuals
are much more important when using Linux, then paid support is.

Consider to learn how to understand the output of "apropos", "man",
"info", "--help" from command line. If this isn't what you want, then
why are you using an UNIX/POSIX alike operating system?

If I want to toast a bread I use a toaster and not a dish-washer. You
won't migrate from a toaster to a dish-washer and expect that the
dish-washer does the same as the toaster does. I'm sorry if you got the
wrong impression that Linux and it's communities are
replacements/competitors for/of Microsoft or Apple.

Linux isn't rocket science, most people should be able to become a
power user with less effort. However, it requires some interest and
the will to learn.

Regards,
Ralf

Hi,

please don't misunderstand this as a unfriendly rough reply, I only
try to explain something about a common misunderstanding.

Please read this reply:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-users/2017-July/010225.html

Correction of a sentence in the above post:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-users/2017-July/010226.html

Most, if not all of us power users, developer, geeks try to help people
as good as we can, for free as in beer, if we have got the time to do
so. We try to do this even if you are living on another continent and
even if you post nearly unusable information. You might not live next
door and actually at least I don't care if people want to use Linux or
not. It's freedom and freedom requires some effort.

You learned usage of a handkerchief or toilet paper, once you
parents and/or somebody else helped you and after a while you became a
super user in wiping the nose and cleaning your backside. They didn't
use a mailing list to teach you this. However, in the meantime you
learned to read and write, even while you might be a dyslexic (note, I
am a dyslexic myself) and perhaps you even learned how to do this in a
foreign language (I don't need to point out that English isn't my
native language ;).

Linux (in this context not just the kernel, but a distro with all the
user space software as e.g. provided by the Ubuntu flavour Lubuntu) is
not a competitor to proprietary operating systems attitudes. When I
started with using Linux, btw. I didn't migrate from MS or Apple, I
misunderstood the policies of different Linux distros, too. Nowadays
I'm using a Linux distro that distinctly mentions to be _not_ a user
friendly distro, see
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux#User_centrality .

Ubuntu and it's flavours are already user-friendly, but they still
follow a policy of "freedom". If you want something childproof, then do
_not_ use Linux. Children get more help than adults, but they are also
not free to do what adults are allowed to do. Freedom isn't for free,
you need to pay for it with attention.

I guess I could explain in a very simple way, where many newbies act
irrational. Do you think that "Lubuntu-users Digest, Vol 64, Issue 2"
is a good subject for your concerns? Would you use the subject
"Lubuntu-users Digest, Vol 64, Issue 2" for a letter of application,
too? With all due respect, the chosen subject is idiotic and you are
aware of this. You can not expect anybody to care for "Lubuntu-users
Digest, Vol 64, Issue 2". For sure, once upon a time you learned how to
write a subject and this was a long time ago before you subscribed to a
Linux distro's mailing list.

Ralf

Try searching for a local Linux User Group (LUG). Because they will have
the advantage of being able to look at your problem and do the technical
things to fix it, it might be a really good idea.

Re: [lubuntu-users] dropping i386/PPC (was: Re: [lubuntu-devel] State of PPC)

2017-07-17 Thread Nio Wiklund

[continuing top posting]

Hi everybody,

1. I think that we should keep making the current 32-bit versions alias
'i386' (with i686 kernels) of Lubuntu, Ubuntu Server, mini.iso and the
other flavours that want to keep it.

I agree with Aere's arguments (near the end of this mail).

2. I can understand and accept that PowerPC support will end.

Best regards
Nio

Den 2016-11-16 kl. 23:58, skrev Walter Lapchynski:

Aere: I think what Ubuntu is discussing is removing i386/x86/32-bit,
i.e. going all amd64/x64/64-bit. And yes, it would very negatively
impact many Lubuntu users as well as the goals of the Lubuntu project as
a whole.

Unfortunately, I was not able to make it to the session. For those of us
in the same boat, here's some links:

 * IRC: https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2016/11/16/%23ubuntu-uos-core.html#t14:55

The majority of this conversation concerned PPC. I think the long answer
is there are some rather annoying endian bugs and a yaboot issue that no
one currently supporting PPC (Lubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Server) has
the resources to deal with. Not to mention upstream. I'll let those
leading the discussion (cc'd) confirm this, but it sounds like by when
support for existing PPC releases end, it will be time to stop providing
any sort of PPC images.

As far as my perspective is concerned, I'm perfectly happy with dropping
PPC. It makes me sad. PPC brought me to the Lubuntu community. However,
it becomes increasingly harder to make PPC users happy. The successes
that we have had in recent times are largely by accident. Neither
Lubuntu nor Ubuntu MATE have the resources to support PPC. It does sound
like Ubuntu Server will be dropping PPC. I think it only makes sense for
us to follow suit.

Apparently, there are plans in place to evaluate the health of the PPC
port during the Z cycle and so a decision on removing PPC from the
archives will likely come in 6 months time. Even then, it sounds like
that's going to be a temporary delay to PPC's inevitable removal.

Turning to x86, one of the things that was brought up in this discussion
was limited support for x86 among browsers. Chrome (and yes, upstream
Chromium) dropped support for it entirely. Firefox continues to provide
x86 support though there is [some talk][1] about removing support for
some CPU extensions which could affect a small subset of x86 users.
Probably not a big issue. Suffice it to say, this seems to be a moot issue.

However, there was some discussion about the fact that since the vast
majority of new machines are x86_64, much in the way of development and
QA (even upstream) has been done on x86_64, and as such x86 bugs are
popping up that were not otherwise being noticed.

Ubuntu has moved x86 download links to alternate downloads, so you have
to actually hunt for them. Apparently, there's not a lot of backlash on
this. Of course, we all know Unity isn't exactly all that usable on
these vintage of machines.

One thing I'm happy to hear is that no one's talking about removing x86
outside of Ubuntu Desktop and Server (nothing definitive yet). It
doesn't sound like it's going to be removed from the archives. The
feeling appears that it's well supported upstream. That said, it's on
the shoulders of flavors to decide on what to do.

I'm woking this day, so I will not be able to attempt :-(

Walter & Julien:

What is meant by the proposal of "dropping i386"?

Does it mean dropping all 32-bit machines (as 'i386' in Debian
packages would imply)?

If so, I think that would be a very extreme, draconian thing to do.

In my particular case, it would mean that seven of the machines in
my test-bed would have to be consigned to the junk-heap.

If it affects me this drastically, I'm sure it will negatively
impact a lot of other users.

Even if a machine can run 64-bit, if it doesn't have a lot of
memory, I will use the i386 version of the OS, because it uses the
limited memory better, and requires measurably less memory for the OS.

@et al:

I also am sad about the "demise" or withering of the PPC port, both from
Debian and Lubuntu . . . and from the slated decision by Firefox to drop
support for PPC . . . . As I've posted before, there seemed to be a vortex
of neglect that precipitated this "event" . . . the devs seem to be looking
only at one "screen" (so to speak) and end users such as myself try to wade
through trying to figure out if problems are the inevitable "pilot error"
or . . . e.g., due to "big endian" issues that nobody is bothering to fix .
. . . I find it also a problem that the notice for the video conference
went out to Lu users list only a couple days ahead, and that no one had
posted anything about it on the Apple User sub-forum, etc.

As an example of the difficulties experienced by users of the PPC systems,
I recently went through a bug report cycle on LP on an issue with U-MATE
possibly 14.04 on my Powermac relating to failure of the optical drive to
mount disks . . . it took many months to get passed the "Are you sure this
problem is happening, to you?" line taken by the devs . . . even after the
multiple times I posted the data that when I simply logged out of MATE
session and into an XFCE session the problem went away . . . months went by
with no response or effort . . . finally I believe we had "exceeded the
time limits" on the bug report . . . and there were some further posts on
whether the problem was "real" . . . . And, then suddenly, as the bug was
being closed, a minor miracle after running an update/upgrade . . . the
problem had been silently "solved" . . . & MATE was able to mount DVDs in
my Powermac. Nobody ever posted to the bug saying, "hey we found the
problem . . . this is what we did" . . . the problem persisted as
"unresolved" and marked as "not verifiable"--then gone, but months later.

Possibly those newer to the PPC experience would have long ago moved on to
something else . . . thus supporting Martin's report of "less than .01
percent of downloads are of PPC systems." The point is that historically
there has been finger pointing from devs that "the responsibility is with
PPC users" . . . and PPC users (I'm gathering evidence from the Ubuntu
apple sub-forum) find that "nobody is listening" . . . and in that sense,
both are right . . . .

But, still, as was mentioned by "slangasek" . . . in the video conference,
and myself in the past, here and on the sub-forum, "the AmigaOne guys are
breathing new life into PPC" . . . possibly they could run 64 bit, I don't
know on that . . . point being that they will, if not now, be looking for a
system to run on their computers . . . and it could be Ubuntu-based . . .
if it is there. Otherwise, people just shop on to what works . . . .

Seems like the death knell would be the dropping of PPC by FF, there are
other choices, on my PPC units Qupzilla and those other browsers mentioned
don't run too well, also they are not as full featured as FF . . . my
personal PPC units are falling behind the technological curve for basic
stuff like flipping around the web, but otherwise for simple word
processing they are still running . . . Xenial . . . which for them might
be enough; but at a certain point if FF stops providing upgrades . . . will
mean the potential usefulness is diminished, even if the kernels would be
maintained--but the machines are in fact still running quite fine . . . .

So, even though it seems like there might be other OSs to choose from for
PPC, someone mentioned Arch, which seems to be a new learning curve for
those of us who started with Debian/Ubuntu/mintPPC options, and someone
mentioned "Puppy" for low spec machines . . . for someone who found their
way to linux as a way to keep what were perfectly good machines that Apple
had "unsupported" . . . it is indeed "sad" to see the benign neglect given
to PPC ports and OS's in the last few years . . . .

Sayonara, linux on PPC . . .

Hi All,

Did a few more tests.

Using personal test list, "Lubuntu - Additional things to test for".
* Installed HP LaserJet.
* Went OK but got a "Sorry, Ubuntu 17.04 has experienced an internal error"
/usr/share/hplip/systray.py
* Installed LibreOffice. Opening a .odt file runs AbiWord. Shouldn't it run
Writer?

I've attached my personal test list as a PDF, in case someone is interested.

Re: [lubuntu-users] [Networking] wi-fi disconnects and won't reconnect 16.04

2017-07-17 Thread George Tremoulis
I have had this same problem for months now since. Very frustrating as it seems
so random. I have gone as long as a few days without losing connection and
other times I have to reboot several times a day. Never had this problem with
prior version of Lubuntu.

disabled bluetooth, disabled bluetooth coexistence, disabled power

things that I do not recall at the moment.

[lubuntu-users] repositioning files within a directory by drag and drop

2017-07-17 Thread oldmarathonrunner
Very basic I know. I can drag and drop files on desktop. I can drag and drop
files from external media into pictures for example but I am not then able to
drag and drop within to reposition them. I would be more than grateful for the
terminal command to permit this . I am just a user with no interest in the
internal goings on. Yakety yak is the version I have and as I update and
upgrade regularly hope it is up to date.

Hello, I use Lubuntu and it's really great!
I only have one problem: I download Kiwix program in 32 bit to use Wikipedia
and it does not open!
Any solution to this problem?!
I change the permissions of the executable file, but it does not work...

2017-07-17 Thread oldmarathonrunner
Another great solution to a problem that many many people have had not only
with the new version but past versions too. Of course nobody has actually fixed
the problem they just tell you to reset your entire panel. This is why most
people can not get on with Linux distros. I have lost my on off button too but
I simply can not be arsed to reset the entire panel yet again. It only
disappears because the entire panel is disfunctional, but hey let's not worry
about that chaps!

 When I installed my latest ?Lubuntu? (17.04) I had a ?log-on/log-

off? button at the right hand end of the panel, (bottom of the

 desktop).

However, after I have re-arranged the panel items as I want them, I

find that the ?log-on/log-off? button had disappeared.

I prefer to have the button, but can?t now find where it is hidden.

I would assume it is in the ?add/remove panel items? somewhere but

can?t locate it. Can anyone solve this mystery please? Where is it?

From the order of things in my task bar (including it, and things

before and after it), it appears to be called "Application Launch

Bar", but that name does not seem correct to me. Perhaps it is named

 badly.

Right-click on the panel and select "Panel settings" go to the the "Panel

Applets" tab and select "+Add" and then select " Application launch bar".

 That should do it.
