[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 24.04 LTS Released!

2024-04-25 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 24.04 LTS has
been released. With the codename Noble Numbat, Lubuntu 24.04 is the 26th
release of Lubuntu, the 12th release of Lubuntu with LXQt as the default
desktop environment.

Download and Support Lifespan
-

With Lubuntu 24.04 being a long-term support interim release, it will
follow the standard LTS support period of **three years**, and will be
supported until April 2027.

You can download Lubuntu 24.04 here: https://lubuntu.me/downloads/

If you would like to upgrade your existing 23.10 installation, please
visit our manual page describing the process:
https://manual.lubuntu.me/stable/D/upgrading.html

Common Ubuntu instructions can be found here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NobleUpgrades/

New in 24.04

### Try or Install Screen

Lubuntu now ships an attractive "installer prompt", which provides a
simple, intuitive, and beautiful environment from which to connect to
the Internet, set your desired language, and choose to Try or Install
Lubuntu. If you select a different language and choose to Try Lubuntu,
the live session will automatically be updated for that language.

### System Installer

 Customize Menu

Traditionally, installing Lubuntu only provides a regular installation
mode (a single option for installs). This changes with Lubuntu 24.04,
where you can now pick between Normal, Full, and Minimal. A Normal
installation gives you a traditional Lubuntu experience. The Minimal
mode ships with just the desktop environment and essential components
(no web browser or snapd). A Full installation is the same as Normal,
but comes with several recommended third-party apps:

 * Virtual Machine Manager
 * Element
 * Thunderbird
 * Krita

In addition, you can choose to download and install updates during the
installation procedure rather than having to install them afterwards.
This can help speed up the installation process and get you
up-and-running quicker.

 OEM Installation Mode

Since our transition to LXQt over five years ago, we've been notably
missing one very useful feature - an OEM installation mode. In the past,
it was possible to install and configure Lubuntu on a system, then
prepare it for shipping to an end-user. This is useful for hardware
manufacturers or people giving a computer to someone else, but is not
functionality we retained.

We are pleased to report that the OEM installer has made a comeback in
Lubuntu 24.04.

If you're looking to sell, provision, or donate hardware with Lubuntu
preinstalled, the OEM installation mode is meant for you. OEM
installation is exactly the same as normal installation, except for the
user account created at install time is a temporary OEM user rather than
a permanent user. After installation, you can:

 * log in
 * install or remove software
 * run tests
 * configure settings
 * etc.

Once the system is configured properly, you can activate the "Prepare
for shipping to end user" icon on the desktop, confirm that you are
finished configuring the system, shut the computer down, and then send
it to its intended destination. When the user receives it and powers it
on, they will be shown a first-boot setup screen allowing them to
configure their own user account.

You can activate OEM installation mode by selecting "OEM install (for
manufacturers)" in the ISO boot menu. Alternatively, you can boot the
ISO normally, click Try Lubuntu, and then launch the OEM installer from
the Application Menu > System > Install Lubuntu 24.04 LTS (OEM mode).

### Applications and Utilities

It's not often that we add new utilities to Lubuntu, but this cycle we
added several new applications to our default install, providing several
new and powerful features we think you'll enjoy using.

 Bluetooth Management

We now ship Blueman as our Bluetooth manager. This provides a convenient
system tray icon for managing bluetooth devices. If your system is
Bluetooth-enabled, a status icon will automatically appear in the toolbar.

 SDDM Configuration Editor

Have you always wanted to configure the login screen? Good news, you now
can! The SDDM configuration editor allows you to modify the login screen
settings, changing the theme used, adjusting the reboot and shutdown
commands used, and much more.

 Software Updater

Our previous software update installer has been replaced by a
new-and-improved utility, "Lubuntu Update". The UI has been
substantially revamped, update notifications have been integrated into
the system better, and you can now manually check for updates and
install them whenever you want.

 Redshift

If you are one of the many users that benefit from having a night color
mode on your system, you'll be happy to hear that Lubuntu now ships a
night color feature via Redshift-Qt. You can enable it by running
Redshift from the application menu.

 Picom Configuration Utility

Re: [lubuntu-users] Lubuntu Noble Beta Released!

2024-04-11 Thread Walter Lapchynski
 1. gparted has a lot of dependencies. You can blame the GNOME folks. In
Ubuntu proper, it would be no big deal because their whole thing is
based in GNOME. Not so with us. You'd have the same problem doing it in
Kubuntu. That said, we do have the KDE Partition Manager already
installed. No additional dependencies needed.
 2. gphoto2 isn't installed by default. That's a red herring anyways. As
for lubuntu-desktop, it's how the entire desktop environment (and
subsequently X) is on the system to begin with. If you remove/purge that
package, you remove the thing that requires all of those packages to be
installed. At that point, if you `autoremove` you lose everything.
Incidentally, this is how *all* of the flavors work (and always have),
including Ubuntu proper.
 3. If you want some help, more details would be necessary.

shocked, i lost X too.
3. upgrade, also creating lots of garbage, and error notifications.

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu Noble Beta Released!

2024-04-11 Thread Walter Lapchynski
We are happy to announce the Beta release for Lubuntu Noble (what will
become 24.04 LTS)!

= What makes this cycle unique? =

Lubuntu is a lightweight flavor of Ubuntu, based on LXQt and built for
you. As an official flavor, we benefit from Canonical’s infrastructure
and assistance, in addition to the support and enthusiasm from the wider
Ubuntu community. We are thankful for the opportunity to call ourselves
an Ubuntu flavor; when there are common struggles, we step up to help.
When discussions arise that affect the entire ecosystem, we lend a
voice. This cycle was no different in that respect, but different in
many others.

This started with the normal transitions that occur during the beginning
of every cycle, a list of which can be found on the release schedule for
Noble [1]. These transitions take time; we (as Ubuntu) perform rigorous
testing to ensure these packages are ready before publishing them for
general availability. Several feature uploads became stuck, but we were
looking forward to the opportunity to test after Feature Freeze.

We then faced two major transitions following Feature Freeze, the first
of which was time_t [2]. This allows for 32-bit devices to work past
2038. To learn more about the 2038 problem, visit this site [3].
Immediately following this transition, the xz-utils backdoor was found
[4]. We would like to thank the Canonical and community developers
involved in these transitions for their work around the clock to get
everyone in the ecosystem to a releaseable state.

= What does this mean for Lubuntu? =

We need extra help from our community to test this release. If you have
a few spare hours (or even minutes), please do help us test. If
something is not working, please feel free to check the Beta tracking
document [5], and file a bug if it is not otherwise reported.

If you are unsure how to file a bug report but just want to make the
issue known, that is okay, please either make a post on our Discourse
instance [6] or join our Development channel on Matrix [7]. Any help is
appreciated, and your one post or message will make a difference for
many users.

= What new features made it? =

For much more information, please see the Alpha status post [8].

Since then, we have made the tough decision to not include the following
in the final release:

 * Power management UX.
 * Active Directory support in Calamares before release; that pull
request has been submitted upstream.

That being said, a redesigned Customize menu has made it, in addition to
other bugfixes and features listed in the Alpha announcement.

Our final release announcement will have many more details, stay tuned!

= Where do I download it? =

From our downloads page, here [9].

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 23.04 End-of-Life Announcement

2024-01-25 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Lubuntu 23.04 has reached end-of-life as of today, January 25, 2024. It
will no longer receive software updates (including security fixes) or
technical support. All users are urged to upgrade to Lubuntu 23.10 as
soon as possible to stay secure. You can upgrade to Lubuntu 23.10
without reinstalling Lubuntu from scratch by following the official
upgrade procedure[1]. Alternatively, you can download Lubuntu 23.10 or
Lubuntu 22.04[2] and do a clean installation[3] if you prefer.

Nine months ago, on April 20th, 2023, Lubuntu 23.04 was released. It
shipped a number of new features including an enabled-by-default X
compositor (Picom), PipeWire, a new default screensaver, and the latest
(at the time) version of LXQt. While the innovation and stability
Lubuntu 23.04 provided served us well, it is now time to move on. We are
now focusing our support efforts on Lubuntu 23.10 and later, as well as
on Lubuntu 22.04 LTS. Lubuntu 23.04 will no longer receive bug or
security fixes from the Lubuntu team. Additionally, as the underlying
Ubuntu 23.04 packages Lubuntu uses have reached end-of-life, Lubuntu
23.04 will no longer receive updates for any core applications,
utilities, or OS components.

Lubuntu features two different types of releases – Long Term Support
(LTS) releases and interim releases. Interim releases are supported for
only nine months after release, and are primarily for users who are
willing or able to upgrade or reinstall frequently in order to get the
best that Lubuntu has to offer. Lubuntu 23.04 was an interim release,
and is being dropped from Lubuntu support accordingly.

Note that users of Lubuntu 22.04 LTS do not have to take any action at
this time. LTS releases are supported for three years from the date of
release. We will continue to support Lubuntu 22.04 LTS until April 2025.

If you are still running Lubuntu 23.04, we **strongly** recommend that
you upgrade to Lubuntu 23.10 as soon as possible. You can read about
what's new in Lubuntu 23.10 at https://lubuntu.me/mantic-released/.
Alternatively, if you are unable to use Lubuntu 23.10, or if you would
like to use our LTS releases and avoid frequent upgrades, you can
install Lubuntu 22.04 from scratch and enjoy another year of updates and
support before having to upgrade again.

Thank you to everyone who uses Lubuntu! If you have problems
reinstalling or upgrading, feel free to ask for help via our official
support channels. We're happy to help users having upgrade problems even
after Lubuntu 23.04's end-of-life date. You can find a list of places to
reach us by visiting our Links page[4]. We can also be reached via IRC
at #lubuntu on Libera.Chat[5].

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 23.04 (Lunar Lobster) reaches End of Life on January 25, 2024

2023-12-14 Thread Chris Guiver
If you’re using Lubuntu 23.04 (or any other Ubuntu 23.04 or 23.04
flavor), please be warned that EOL warnings are now out (1); meaning
you’re in the last six weeks of supported life.

---
Ubuntu announced its 23.04 (Lunar Lobster) release almost 9 months
ago, on April 20, 2023 and its support period is now nearing its end.
Ubuntu 23.04 will reach end of life on January 25, 2024.

At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include
information or updated packages for Ubuntu 23.04.
---

So if you’re using 23.04 still, please plan your release-upgrade
somewhat soon, and refer to this page in our manual for upgrade
instructions (2), and note any warnings in the Lubuntu 23.10 release
notes (3), or Ubuntu 23.10 release notes (4).

So this appears to be a workaround, but I'm not sure what causes it.

What version of VirtualBox are you using? Perhaps it's too old to handle
the kernel in Lubuntu 22.04 and you need to upgrade. You may want to
back up your VMs before doing this just in case the upgrade messes with
your other virtual machines.

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 22.04 hangs on boot under VirtualBox

2022-11-14 Thread Ben Coleman
I've tried installing a couple of VMs of Lubuntu 22.04 under VirtualBox
6.1.40 under Win 10, and both eventually come up with the same problem:
while booting, it halts in the 'Powered by lubuntu' screen where the
penguin medallion should have a rotating light. There is no rotating
light and it seems to have stopped at the Southeast portion of the
medallion. This happening to one installation might be a glitch, but it
happening to 2 looks like an ongoing issue. Any ideas what could be
going on?

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 22.10 Feature Freeze Fast Approaching: What It Means and How To Help

2022-08-23 Thread Simon Quigley

Dearest Lubuntu contributors and users,

During every release cycle, we hit a milestone titled Feature Freeze,
where developers in the Ubuntu and Lubuntu projects are no longer
permitted to upload new versions of software without an exception, in
order to dedicate the remainder of the cycle to improving stability.

The Feature Freeze date for Lubuntu is Thursday, August 25th, 2022. I
will be around to process any final uploads from 3 PM to 6 PM US Central
Time on that date, after which I will declare Lubuntu to be in Feature
Freeze. If you're aware of any new features that would be beneficial to
include for users, please ping me in our development channel on
Matrix(/IRC/Telegram)[1] and I will address those requests first come,
first serve.

On my personal wishlist is the LXQt menu overhaul, yet another update to
Calamares, and further evaluation of the upstream LXQt code to ensure
there isn't a bugfix or feature we can cherry-pick. Unfortunately, after
speaking with LXQt upstream, they do not plan on releasing 1.2 until
shortly after the release of Lubuntu 22.10, and backports for non-LTS
releases are still up in the air. This weekend I will prepare a
QA-related document outlining every single commit we have cherry-picked,
why, and what users should expect to be different when reporting bugs to
upstream. My goal is to have this done in a thorough enough manner that
upstream LXQt will have little complaints. I have blocked off 1 PM to 6
PM on Saturday, tentatively, to do that.

You may be asking, how can I help? By testing[1], of course :) with
features no longer free-flowing into 22.10, this is the time to test
every "nook and cranny" of the operating system. What doesn't work for
you? Is there anything we can do better without vastly expanding the
scope of our mission?

If you have any questions, please do let me know. I will note publicly
at this point that the Lubuntu Council has granted me some of my former
permissions before my hiatus, including Release Manager capacity. I'm
glad to be back, and I hope to serve the Lubuntu project well once again.

Thanks!

Re: [lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 22.04 LTS is released!

2022-05-02 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
If you think ads are messing up your browsing, install an adblocker.
They're available as browser add-ons for both Firefox and Chrome. I use
Adblocker Ultimate, and I've also had good success with AdGuard. Even if
you have a more capable machine, adblockers are a good idea for security
reasons, since ads can sometimes attempt to install malware on your
computer without you even having to click the ad. And these malicious
advertisements have occasionally snuck onto legitimate websites. Install an
adblocker, and you're happy.

As far as the increased resource usage, I would suspect Snaps are the
problem. Firefox is now distributed as a Snap package in Lubuntu 22.04, and
the Snap package system has quite a bit of extra overhead compared to the
old way of doing things (where Firefox was just installed straight into the
system via the apt package system). Having Firefox distributed as a Snap is
a fantastic decision from a security standpoint (if something hacks your
browser, it might be able to get your passwords, but your files are more
likely to be safe), but it also isn't awesome for performance and can cause
some compatibility issues.

If you want to give it a whirl, you can install an official, non-Snap
version of Firefox directly from Mozilla by following Mozilla's directions.
You'll probably lose all your browsing history, bookmarks, and saved or
autogenerated passwords, so ensure you're prepared for that (back up your
passwords and bookmarks). Once you're ready, here's the instructions:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux#w_install-firefox-from-mozilla-builds-for-advanced-users
You probably should run "sudo snap remove firefox" before completing step 6
in the installation process. This should start up faster and be less
resource-intensive.

Last time I experienced almost-no-ADs was in socialism in Yugoslavia.
I doubt Lubuntu (even 26.04 LTS) could get me that ;-P
but advocating for sustainability by Lubuntu would be useful.

I am not convinced this is only the issue of web pages,
but would love to have more clarity as I can not test myself.

Other than that - I do appreciate your individual efforts.

On behalf of the Lubuntu release team,

Congratulations on the best release yet of Lubuntu.

With the color customization, and other features I like, I am actually
using this desktop, in favor of LXDE (which I've been using up to now).

I like it so much (along with additional new features available in the
repository), that I upgraded my production system from 20.04.

On behalf of the Lubuntu release team,

Thank you for your hard work on this release.

I've been testing it, and got some pleasant surprises.

The color-customization I so enjoyed on LXDE, now works on LXQT too.
And it now supports the SD-card reader in my Mac Mini.

It appears to upgrade reliably from Lubuntu 20.04, and it successfully
runs all my music tests.  I am quite happy with this release, so far.

Only other top posted offering, I mentioned synaptic because I think there
are a few different versions of "chrome" out there, and it might have been
that synaptic showed "chromium-browser" as the package in the repos?? but
I believe that whatever it was I picked that . . . whereas I think in my
other distros I might have used "apt install chromium" . . . ???

But, again, I had not previously logged into the LXDE session before your
post, so it was pre-loaded or pre-preferred . . . and chromium was there in
the menu . . . .

Trying to provide relevant data . . . I think I was running 20.04 since it
was alpha . . . really not too many issues, it's a fine release.

I originally installed Lubuntu as a test system, and I kept
updating it to the latest version.  I'm not sure which level I
started with.

When I upgraded to Lubuntu 20.04 (in a terminal session, using
"sudo do-release-upgrade -d"), things seemed to be working well,
and I was able to install my Eclipse Java development environment,
and things were working well.

My Ubuntu 20.04 upgrade (which I was thinking of switching to),
didn't end up with a working Eclipse development environment.

Using the LXDE desktop on Lubuntu 20.04, I was able to even use my
strange color scheme, which I like a lot, and things were working
in Eclipse.

So I restored my production files from 16.04 to the 20.04 system,
and started working with that.

That process proceeded without many problems, so I 'transferred my
flag' to the new system.

I'm just now cleaning up the last few 'rough edges'.

The thing I like most about the new system, is that Rosegarden now
loads channel recording filters (which it didn't on 16.04, and
LibreOffice Writer, once again allows you to produce HTML files
where graphics images are linked-to in the HTML file, rather than
forcing you to embed them as data within the HTML file.

I've been using an old copy of openSUSE Linux for editing HTML
web-pages, because of the need to keep the graphics images
separate.  But now, I can use my production system to do it once
again.

Sincerely,

Aere

Probably, the system I used, was a fresh-install of Lubuntu 18.10, to
which I added my MIDI music & KeyMusician Keyboard test applications,
and did my testing.

That system was upgraded (and tested) through 19.04, 19.10 (which I set
up to use the LXDE desktop), and finally to 20.04, recently.  The
release notes say you can't upgrade from 18.04 to any of the later levels.

I took that test system, installed a lot of applications (including the
Eclipse Java development environment, which is a snap-package), with the
idea of evaluating it as a production system.

I then restored all my home directory files, using the Backups
application (deja-dup) from a backup taken on my Lubuntu 16.04 system.

I installed a number of other applications I realized I needed
(including Chromium), and started using the new system.  I tried out
both the LXDE desktop, and the LXQT desktop.

Surprisingly, there were few problems.  Chromium not appearing in the
menu being one of them.

I have gone nearly a week with the new system now, and am able to do all
the things I normally do.

images are linked-to in the HTML file, rather than forcing you to embed
them as data within the HTML file.

I've been using an old copy of openSUSE Linux for editing HTML

But now, I can use my production system to do it once again.

By the way, chromium does appear in the menu, when using the Lubuntu
(LXQT) desktop.  It just doesn't appear in the menu on the LXDE desktop.

I tried the following in the LXDE desktop.

I checked the ownership and permissions of chromium-browser in /usr/bin,
and they are the same as things I can execute from the menu.

I purged (completely removed) chromium using the muon package manager,
and removed chromium using Discover (which uses snap packages).

Then I installed it using Discover.

Chromium did not appear in the menu.

I installed chromium using Synaptic Package Manager.  It still didn't
appear in the LXDE menu.

I was able to create a link to chromium-browser (in /usr/bin) in the
Desktop folder, so now I at least have a non-typing way of running
chromium on the LXDE desktop.

Yep. Or make your own. Same as on LXDE (except you'd get GTK not Qt
themes).

What are you wanting to customize?

The appearance of the windows, and color scheme (if possible).

The first one works the same way as with all version of Lubuntu: you
change the Openbox settings. LXQt isn't even involved. And there
certainly ways to change the latter.

I saw that, but as I recall, there were very few (or only one) choices.

The first one works the same way as with all version of Lubuntu: you
change the Openbox settings. LXQt isn't even involved. And there

I don't know how to fix it, but a likely cause is that between 18.04

than a traditional .deb package.

Ubuntu moved Chromium to a snap package so that they only have to
maintain one snap package for all currently supported releases of

Can you manually add an item to the launcher? That might be the simplest fix.

If I knew how to add an item to the launcher manually, I could probably

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 19.04 (Disco Dingo) reaches End of Life on January 2 2020

2020-01-12 Thread Walter Lapchynski
As you may have noticed from the [Ubuntu announcement][1], 19.04 (Disco
Dingo) will be unsupported starting 23 January 2020 and that naturally
applies to Lubuntu, as well. That said, we have composed a [blog
post][2] announcing as such as well as outlining the current support
status for all releases.

In any case, if you're using 19.04 (see `lsb_release -d`), please
upgrade as soon as possible, but certainly in the next 11 days.

That's because that's not our website. It has no association with the

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 18.04.3 Released!

2019-08-08 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, we are pleased to
announce that Lubuntu 18.04.3 LTS has been released!

Lubuntu 18.04.3 is a set of images produced for convenience so that a
fresh install of the latest Lubuntu LTS does not require as many updates
after install.

One notable change we made since the previous point release was setting
the correct lock program.

More info and download links can be found on the [official
announcement][1].

Huge thanks to Dan Simmons, Chris Guiver, and others for testing this
release!

Re: [lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 19.10 installer . . . errors!! second time . . . .

2019-06-21 Thread Fritz Hudnut
@Walter:

Thanks for the update, glad to hear you got a fix pushed through, it was
kind of a "nasty" one . . . . I had a few spare moments today, but not
enough time to mess with the download and re-install of 19.10; so I
"adjusted" my /etc/apt/sources.list to include the word "eoan" in various
places, I dropped into a tty and and then ran update/upgrade . . . showed
538 MB of packages to make the system into "eoan" . . . and a few minutes
later I rebooted into . . . "eoan" "19.04" . . . .

Seems to be pretty "zippy" in the Terminal . . . "revives" seemingly
consistently from suspend . . . . I'll test on with it and see if it turns
into "eoan 19.10" at some point.

Our fix for the kernel panic bug is now uploaded. I rebuilt the ISO last
night and confirmed it was working so this issue is officially resolved.

Yep, we've had this problem for a little while now and have been
struggling to figure it out. Probably should have said something about
it sooner, but I think we all high hopes it would resolve itself more
readily.

> if anyone wants to check
> this out, and file an appropriate bug report

Actually, we've had [one of those][1] for a while now.

> bug report people
> don't like being flagged on plays that aren't in their area.

As a "bug report person" I'd rather see a misfiled bug report than no
bug report at all. It's trivial to file it somewhere else. If worse
comes to worst, as it suggests on the [wiki][2], just file it against
lubuntu-meta.

> And, system
> won't boot to file an "apport-collect" . . . report.

This is true. In general, you'll want to use ubuntu-bug/apport to file
bugs but if you can't, no problem. All of us "bug people" aren't just a
bunch of big heartless meanies XD

That said, I'm happy to report that kernel master TJ spent a ridiculous
amount of time trying to debug this (he actually logged into a virtual
machine with the serial console)— something like 7-8 hours— and finally
found the problem which seems ultimately linked to a [change upstream in
initramfs-tools][3] and proposed [a fix][4] that I just confirmed fixes
the problem.

To fix the situation, follow these steps:

 1. Boot the live image
 2. Open the browser
 3. Navigate to the [raw diff][5] of the fix
 4. Right click and save it (~/Downloads/D15.diff)
 5. Open qterminal
 6. Enter `cd /etc/calamares`
 7. Enter `sudo patch --strip 2 < ~/Downloads/D15.diff`
 8. Run the installer like normal

I encourage you to report your results on the bug report and/or the
differential revision (aka "the fix").

Thanks for your patience.

Re: [lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 19.04 installer . . . no errors!! first time . . . .

2019-06-17 Thread Fritz Hudnut
et al:

Just to update, got the 19.04 live edition . . . used mkusb to create
startup flash drive . . . this am ran the install, basically repeating the
steps I did for 19.10 . . . only difference in this install the installer
asked me to flag the EFI partition as "esp" . . . which I did. A few
minutes later install was "done."

This time I shut down rather than reboot . . . and on cold boot (not
holding alt/option) Lubuntu loaded and we were logging in . . . .

Ran an update/upgrade . . . ran "update-grub" which it had already done . .
. sync'd into Firefox . . . in a few minutes I'll be shutting it down for a
number of hours . . . we'll see how things go on cold boot . . . . But, in
contrast to 19.10 "failure" . . . 19.04 install went well.

Possibly the 19.10 issues might relate to a problem I had over in Leap 15.1
where the recent kernel would not work with nouveau and/or nvidia card . .
. which I have, and could be that 19.04 represents a "falling back" in
kernels . . . and therefore it works in 19.04 . . . ???

O well, hind sight is 100% . . . supposedly a newer kernel is coming out in
a few days . . . perhaps I'll try to upgrade via console or GUI to 19.10
and see how that goes then??

Re: [lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 19.10 installer . . . errors!! second time . . . .

2019-06-15 Thread Fritz Hudnut
Folks:

Problem I think is "confirmed" . . . waited until the "6/15" daily showed
up on the server, zsync'd it to the latest version, the old one was "91%"
the same as the new one. Rather than re-using the U-MATE startup creator
app, I added "mkusb" to the sources.list and installed that . . . wiped the
flash drive . . . and moved the new version of 19.10 over and booted it up
. . . .

Desktop loaded fine and I set the time & location and then ran the install
. . . the only thing I did differently this time besides setting the
partition for "/boot/efi" . . . was to flag it as "bios_grub" . . . and the
install went fast (possibly too fast) . . . seemed like in 5 minutes it was
again declaring itself "done."

I rebooted and just as yesterday it loaded the OSX 10.14 dmesg window . . .
and then "froze" there. Used the power button to shut down and rebooted
with the alt/option key, got to the OSX Bootloader window and picked the
first disk listing "EFI Partition" . . . which as yesterday I figured was
for the "last installed" system . . . and the Grub window did load . . .
and this time I was able to arrow down through the list to the "Lu 19.10"
option . . . a line of "error -- disk 'hd2, gpt6' not found" lines loaded
followed by "hit any key to continue" . . . which after a couple seconds it
auto-loaded the Grub list again, and I scrolled down to the "Lu Recovery"
option . . . which brought the same errors . . . . So, again, seems like
something in the install didn't go well, whereas I seemed to get the U-MATE
18.04 system installed and booted up just fine in the same drive . . . .

I think I'm done with Lu 19.10 for a bit . . . if anyone wants to check
this out, and file an appropriate bug report I would be happy to report
this on the QA. I've had problems finding the "correct" place to file the
bug report . . . against . . . in the past, traditionally the QA won't
accept "negative" comments w/o a bug report, and the bug report people
don't like being flagged on plays that aren't in their area. And, system
won't boot to file an "apport-collect" . . . report.

I might try to make my way back to Lu 19.04 . . . in a few days?? See how
that goes, I did have that system running before the recent disaster . . . .

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 19.10 installer . . . errors??

2019-06-14 Thread Fritz Hudnut
Folks:

A few weeks ago I had a "sid" system problem that seemed to spread damage
across the two drives that I had linux distros installed on . . . so I had
to nuke the drive that I had U-MATE &7 Lubuntu 19.04 installed on . . . and
I've been working my way back to Lu babe . . .: -)

So after I ran the install of U 18.04 I looked around for a daily on Lu
19.04, and I saw that we are now up to 19.10 . . . so I went for that and
transferred it to a flash drive. Booted the system and the GUI loaded fine
. . . might have opened one app, then went for the install, using "custom"
. . . and all seemed to go well, the installer proudly announced that it
was "done" after a few minutes. I followed the instructions to "remove the
install media and hit return" for reboot . . . and it rebooted and it did
go to "grub" . . . but it first shows the ?? dmesg?? data for OSX 10.14 . .
. which **usually** then drops into the Grub window . . . but this
"froze." I shut the unit down and went for a bike ride.

When I got back I again tried a few attempts to get into Lu 19.10 via grub,
but, it failed, and then after one attempt it showed the words "kernel
panic" . . . which I assume to mean that there was a . . . kernel panic???

I got back to U-MATE and ran "sudo update-grub" . . . and it showed the
various options and it did find the "Lu 19.10 Eon Ermine"??? option, but
then I couldn't arrow down through the list, only the top hit, last system
standing is the U-MATE, and that does boot up and I'm typing this post in a
MATE system . . . .

So, point is, that something in the Lu 19.10 installer didn't seem to find
the EFI boot partition?? Or, did something "wrong" . . . looking at
GParted in MATE shows "5+GB" "used" in the partition I set for the "/" . .
. but something is causing a "kernel panic" . . . which isn't letting me
get to the Lu system . . . even though now Grub has "found" it . . . but,
now Grub seems to be "frozen" via the latest installs of ubuntu based
systems.

I think I could get over to the "sid" system via its Grub list, but that is
in another drive than the one where the ubuntu options are located . . .
might be that the Lu 19.10 partition might have to be wiped and
re-re-installed in a few days??

F

I was able to get to a Grub window

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 18.04: freezes at Login-Screen

2019-05-17 Thread michael
Hi,
I probably did a very stupid thing without knowing what I was doing, inspired
by a friendly chatter on Lubuntu.me. Now my Lubuntu 18.04 freeezes at the
login-Screen and I cannot do anything :-(

Details

I tried to execute "synclient TapButton1=1" (or 0) in LX-Terminal of Lubuntu
18.04 (to be able to toggle Touchpad Tap to Click off/on, that was the chat
suggestion) and got the answer:
"Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?"
So, "sudo apt-cache -n search synaptics driversynaptics driver" and had as
result among others:
xserver-xorg-input-synapticsxserver-xorg-input-synaptics - Synaptics TouchPad
driver for X.Org serverand
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-hwe-18.04 - Synaptics TouchPad driver for X.Org
server
So, (and this was NOT in the chat) "sudo apt install
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics". No tpuchpad toggling after that. So"sudo apt
install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-hwe-18.04", and rebooted (I think I forgot
to reboot after the first install of
xserver-xorg-input-synapticsxserver-xorg-input-synaptics).

Everthing went fine up to login; normally I am able to put my password under my
user-icon, but not since then. Everything freezes, not able to put a singel
letter into the pasword filed. "Ctl+Alt F1 though F8" won'r work, nothing. I
have to switch the notebook off and choose one of my other multi-boot systems
from the boot menu.
Will I have to reinstall Lubuntu 18.04 anew or is there an other more soft
possibility to repair the system.
Thank you for any help,
lubucub

Here's how I did it when I did a roundup for the Reg:

https://www.theregister.co.uk/Print/2013/04/26/xbuntu_round_up/

Virtualbox. Identical VM for each distro: then, 1GB RAM, 8GB hard
disk. Default install. Reboot. Do a full update with:

sudo -s
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade -y
apt-get autoremove -y
# remove obsolete packages
apt-get purge
# remove leftover config files
apt-get clean
# empties the cache

Reboot again. Log in. Wait for the system to "settle" -- no disk activity.
Then I used ``free'' and ``df -h''.

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu compared to other distros

2019-04-24 Thread Mark F
After upgrading to 19.4, which finally moved me to the LXQt form of
Lubuntu, I thought now would be a good time to re-visit other distros. See
if something else beckons me. (I did this about 3 years ago.).

I was struck by how similar (in appearance at least) Peppermint 9.2 is to
Lubuntu LXDE. I'm also liking Mint MATE better than I did when I last
looked at it (about 3 years ago). In terms of full-blown (not intended to
be lightweight) desktop, I liked Neon KDE/Plasma. It didn't feel that
heavy, and the memory wasn't that much.

Anyway, as I was giving distros a quick exploration, I would open the
terminal and run "free". This is what I got for memor used:

===
Cinnamon 19.1 = 515,888 Zorin 12 (core) = 487,088 Xubuntu 19.4 = 397,528
Mate 19.1 = 391,800 (disable background img immediately reduced to 367,068.
disable animated window/glitter stuff: 348,588) Neon KDE/Plasma 20190418 =
388,356 Lubuntu 19.4 (LXQt) = 342,604 Peppermint 9.2 = 314,108 Bodhi 5.0.0
= 201,652 AntiX 17.4.1 = 159,252 Puppy 8.0 = 150,468 (but, after closing
the automatically opened setup dialog: 139,692)
===

[In case that's garbled, I uploaded a screenshot here:
https://i.postimg.cc/kgTDr34j/distros.png ]

Those may not be great comparisons. In most cases I had to open menus to
reach the terminal. (That might increase memory use by the time "free" is
run.). Other times the terminal was on the panel bar.

Also, some distros like Mate were very quick to release memory (after
disabling background image or Compiz effects). Others seemed to leave the
memory allocated until required by something else (which could be better in
actual operation). So, a more valid comparison would require installing
each distro, making config changes (screen image, effects, etc.) then
reboot. (Even better if each installation had a memory usage widget
installed on the desktop so it could be seen without any interaction which
might change the memory used.).

If there is a way to see guest memory use from outside Qemu, I have all the
.iso files and could do that. (I couldn't find a way. I saw some things
saying it's not possible because KVM is a black box).

@Marc:

It's possible that you might have to do "fresh install" . . . I tried to
bring an old PPC iMac up to the last PPC variation of 16.04 from 12.04 . .
. but it "failed" along the way, certain packages weren't available for the
jump from 14.04 to 16.04 . . . running the "do-release-upgrade" method.

I then tried to change the something . . . /etc/sources.list . . . by
editing the name of the distribution . . . all instances changed to what??
"xenial"??? trying to get from 14.04 to 16.04. And I ran the upgrade via
console . . . and it showed that it was "working" . . . lot of packages
downloaded and "installed' . . . but after all that . . . error message of
"supreme failure" . . . . That was Lubuntu/Xubuntu and PPC had "issues"
along the way that made that upgrade difficult . . . but it does seem like
the "archives" for the older distros aren't up to the task of upgrading???
Possibly going freshly might be the best option

@Ludwig:

The **other** option is to "do nothing" and just run the machine to ground
with the last operating system you have in it now. It's very likely that
it is perfectly adequate to do everything you might need, usually there
continues to be basic upgrades available for awhile, and possibly you
could, if apt doesn't do it, **manually** download your choice of browser
and install it??? Those of us who were/are PPC users have had to suffer
the "loss of the latest offering" for awhile now . . . "stuck" in the past
with 16.04 . . . . . . . The machine might break
down before the OS would become totally useless, etc. Time is more
valuable than shopping around for another linux distro . . . . : - 0

Well, it probably won't be. I mean, who wants to use mobile apps on
desktop? One of the most exciting things I've seen on this front is DeX
from Samsung. It allows you to basically plug in your device into a dock
connected to input/output devices and essentially run the phone in a
bigger format. However, you're still using the apps on the phone. More
recently one of the "apps" they brought to DeX is [Ubuntu][1]. Think
about this: Samsung, essentially the #2 player in the smartphone market,
and thus the #1 player in Android, didn't bring Android to desktop, but
instead decided to run a desktop Linux distro on their devices.

If you want that, use a text browser, but then most sites will be

Then wouldn't it make more sense to concern ourselves with how the

I think it's erroneous to assume that software will simply remain the
same. Also, it would be erroneous to assume that Lubuntu wouldn't be
caught by the same changes shaping Ubuntu, at least on some level. We're
not using the same desktop interface, but we are using the same kernel.
We're also using the same init system. This is particulary relevant as
16.04 was the first LTS release that used systemd.

systemd is something that we could spend hours writing about pros and
cons of. In fact, it's been something of a holy war in the world of
Linux. Far too much time has been wasted arguing about the pros and cons
of it. The reality of it is that, for Lubuntu, since Ubuntu is using it,
we're using it. And that means we're mostly at the whims of what Ubuntu
decides to do with regards to configuration.

However, one should note that unlike the previous init system, systemd
is lazy or dependency-based, which is like saying it doesn't load things
until needed. Oddly, this can mean that sometimes if a service is not
loaded as early as possible, the *overall* boot time can be increased.

Which gets at another thing: you can affect the system and customize it
for yourself. The first part of that is analyzing things. You can find
out a little bit about that here:
https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/systemd-blame.html
https://wiki.freedesktop.org/www/Software/systemd/Optimizations/

The other thing I'll mention is that since Lubuntu has historically been
focused on limiting resource use as much as possible, we have used zram.
However, because of a bug in initramfs, boot times were increaed
because of this. We plan on fixing this in 18.04 and so on, but
meanwhile you can use the manual workaround mentioned there if you are
affected:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/1781746

Do you think systemd has anything to do with it? I don't know much about
this, but it seems like I read some things in the past couple years about
systemd causing problems like this, and being disliked by Linux purists
because it's monolithic(?) architecture is prone to such problems? (Be
gentle, I know nothing about this. I just recall getting the impression a
few times systemd might cause this.).

Isn't there a tool the OP could run that shows where boot time is spent?

I'm sympathetic to his complaint because I experienced the same thing in
the past. It seems much better now. But, in the 16.xx range, I had some
*very* slow boot times. I remember running a tool which showed a graphical
display of what was taking how much time. It pointed to (what appeared to
be a) black hole of systemd. From what I could tell just from listening to
the machine, it sounded like it was interrogating hard drive connected to
the laptop. I could hear the head moving, resetting. I have the same drive
and things are much better today. It seems a little slow booting, but not 5
minutes like it used to be. (Booting used to be like running gparted. omg.
Why can't that thing figure things out faster? I haven't run it in a long
time either. Maybe it's better. It used to be unuseable unless I executed
it command-line, passing the actual drive I wanted to work with. Otherwise
I could spend *hours* doing just a dozen things.).

To the OP: What do you consider slow? How long is it actually taking?
(Maybe I'm drawing a comparison to my experience that doesn't exist.).

Our [documentation][1] doesn't say as such, but the b43 driver does
support the BCM4312 chip with PCI ID 14e4:4315, as you can see from the
[upstream documentation][2]. That said, I would suggest that you install
the b43 driver, which is usually as simple as doing installing the
firmware-b43-lpphy-installer package, since you have a LP-PHY version.

The other thing you will need to check is to make sure that other
drivers aren't loaded. It doesn't seem like you have the proprietary
non-open source driver (wl) installed but to be safe, do this:

sudo modprobe -r b43 wl brcmfmac brcmsmac bcma
sudo modprobe b43

If that provides any errors, let me know. Otherwise, it's going to
either help your situation or leave it in the same basic state as when
you first asked. If it does help we need to make it permanent. Look in
/etc/modprobe.d and if there are any files ending in .conf with
blacklist in the name, edit that file and add the following lines:

blacklist wl
blacklist brcmfmac
blacklist brcmsmac
blacklist bcma

And then update the system that loads your kernel modules (read:
drivers) at the beginning of boot:

sudo update-initramfs -u

Now if the modprobe commands did not produce errors, but did not help,
that's a different situation. That may require using the proprietary
drivers, which is not something I would normally suggest. To do that,
you'd want the bcmwl-kernel-source package. Then follow all the steps
above, except you would want to swap b43 and wl in all the commands.

P.S. I've included the list so that others can chime in if they have
further advice.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Lubuntu is, at its core,
Ubuntu. They certainly both share the exact same kernel, which is the
sort of thing that would have an effect on whether or not a device would

What is the ID of this device? `lsusb` should tell you, at least

This is really unnecessary if you use synaptics command line tools like
syndaemon and synclient. I've historically included the appropriate
commands to get the settings I want in autostart and everything works
the way I want every time.

However, it should be noted that synaptics is effectively deprecated in
lieu of libinput. In fact, you'll see GNOME went so far as to
[discontinue support for synaptics][1]. Upstream [Debian is even
generally superceding synaptics][2] (which means it affects Ubuntu).
synaptics still exists but you can see [development is halted][3] while
[libinput rages on][4]. You can use them both, but really, you should
just switch to libinput. The libinput and xinput commands should do the
trick, as covered by [Arch][5].

For what it's worth, there was never an exposed interface for touchpad
settings in any previous version of Lubuntu.

We've included it as a [goal for 19.04][6] but I'm sure as you'll see
from the linked upstream bug, it's not the easiest of issues, so it may
not be possible for 19.04, but we're hoping.

libinput has been built to support Wayland from the get go. So it just
works. Not so with synaptics.

I used the following in the past:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/atareao
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install touchpad-indicator

I'm not sure if that ppa is safe, or if there's a better source for that
app. But, it still works in Lubuntu 18.04. You could try it in 18.10. It
puts a menu item in Accessories. When you execute it, it creates a task
icon near the clock, battery part of the task bar.

I don't use that. I wrote a shell script (executed from .profile at login)
to set synclient parms.

It seems like you should be able to find the .desktop file of the app you
installed. It should be in /usr/share/applications or
~/local/share/applications . (Maybe there are other common places for it).
For example, the one I installed above is at
/usr/share/applications/touchpad-indicator.desktop (If I browse that file,
it says it executes /usr/bin/touchpad-indicator).

Maybe the app you installed is present and you could create a menu item, or
simply execute it from the command line?

in the notes, however, it contained a link written as "How to Write Bugs
Effectively". It should read "How to Report Bugs Effectively". As an on and
off programmer, I have never needed a guide to introducing bugs :)

This evening I downloaded and installed the 18.10 32-bit release of lubuntu
via USB flash drive:-
38e0bf05b6bfc3faa700f779e94cc1b7 lubuntu-18.10-desktop-i386.iso

*In a nutshell:*
I don't think it is a calamares bug - from what I understand, calamares is
the installer.
The problem is something to do with window management. When a window is
created, whatever is creating the window does not take into account that
the taskbar takes up vertical pixels. The result is that you sometimes end
up with some windows that have some of their contents hidden by the taskbar.

*Hardware details:*
Samsung NC10 Netbook, hostname: hawking
Intel Atom N270, 1.66GHz, 32-bit, 2GiB RAM, 149.05 GiB hard drive, no
optical drive, Ethernet and WiFi connections, lubuntu typically installed
via USB flashdrive
https://gist.github.com/21b61903871ee685fc79
Screen dimensions: 1024 x 600 pixels, 270 x 158mm
Resolution: 96 x 96 dots per inch

*Notes from this evening's install of 18.10*
Installing from USB flash drive onto netbook.
The "Welcome to the lubuntu installer" window's buttons - e.g. "Next" &
"Cancel" are obscured by the taskbar. Maximising this window not only fixes
the problem for this screen but for quite a few following screens (that is
"Location","Keyboard", "Partitions","Partitioning").
When I chose to edit a partition, the resulting subwindow had to be
maximised for me to see the "OK" and "Cancel" buttons which appeared to be
obscured by the taskbar.

*Conclusion*
I don't know whether this is a window manager (openbox) issue or if it is a
problem with the display manager (sddm). What do you think?

BW,

Ian

Does anyone have solution to this issue.

There is no touchpad issue with the Lubuntu 18.04, that I am using.

In my testing, I noticed the same thing.

You can change touchpad settings manually from the terminal.

I personally have a FLTK based application that I use to fine-tune
synaptic touchpad settings.

open a terminal and type

synclient

This will list all your current settings if your touchpad is supported
by the synaptic drivers.

Then simply run synclient again when you find the setting you want
with the name and value

probably you want something like:

synclient TapButton1=1

But, you can try each setting that you want to explore and it will
instantly change your settings.  You probably need to save these to a
script to automatically be run each time you start your session.

Israel:

Thank you for providing a work-around for the problem.

Fortunately for me, the systems with the problem are only test-systems.

Hopefully, this problem will be solved before I am to the point of
considering migrating my production systems to Lubuntu 19.04.

Though some people like command-line-interfaces, I hope this work-around
isn't the permanent solution to the problem.
