I see, that is surprising.

We would like to avoid such hardcoding, but the strings we ask for
are not translated by babel (unless some new strings appeared in
new versions).

Lets stay with kaavio then.

Shrug. Kuvaus/Kuvausten luettelo was used, new version of yours Kuvaus/Kuvaukset
perhaps we can leave it in the old version until some chemist report complaint

Fine, so that's the version we have now.

Yes, the common convention is not to write that in the PDF. I'll refer
to this as an official authority:

/usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/babel-finnish/finnish.ldf
\addto\captionsfinnish{%
 \def\prefacename{Esipuhe}%
 \def\refname{Viitteet}%
 \def\abstractname{Tiivistelm\"a}
 \def\bibname{Kirjallisuutta}%
 \def\chaptername{Luku}%
 \def\appendixname{Liite}%
 \def\contentsname{Sis\"alt\"o}% /* Could be "Sis\"allys" as well */
 \def\listfigurename{Kuvat}%
 \def\listtablename{Taulukot}%
 \def\indexname{Hakemisto}%
 \def\figurename{Kuva}%
 \def\tablename{Taulukko}%
 \def\partname{Osa}%
 \def\enclname{Liitteet}%
 \def\ccname{Jakelu}%
 \def\headtoname{Vastaanottaja}%
 \def\pagename{Sivu}%
 \def\seename{katso}%
 \def\alsoname{katso my\"os}%
 \def\proofname{Todistus}%
 \def\glossaryname{Sanasto}%
 }%
We don't mention the word 'table' in the TOC either. The lists for
figures/tables aren't used that much in texts. There are some guides
for naming them in thesis / reports, but I couldn't find a single
authority that would be most correct and official one. I think this one
from babel-finnish would work the best. BTW wouldn't it be easier to
use that instead of hard coding the text in LyX?

I might have messed up some things when writing the
translations for the GUI. I feel the word 'luettelo/lista' might
clarify things in the GUI, but then again the printed version should
not show those. If both need to display the same, it might be
clearer to use the print version for both.

If they need different names, I'd use 'Kaavio / kaaviot' for
chart/charts and 'Graafi / graafit' or 'Diagrammi / diagrammit' for
some nonconventional graph/graphs. 'Kuvaaja' is just a synonym for
'kaavio'. I checked the translations and most presentations are called
chart <-> kaavio. That word covers most of the graphs/charts out there.

The word for that would be 'Rakennekaava'. The word for 'chemical
equation' is 'Reaktiokaava'. I'd imagine the chemists want to enumerate
both, but don't know which one is more common if only one is supported.

Right, so the 'ohjelmalistaukset' sounds more reasonable. I'm a
computer engineer myself and don't associate the word 'listaukset' with
program code. I can only guess the connection by knowing that the
package 'lstlisting' exists.

I just checked that all the "List" strings were recently checked by Martin
Vermeer,
so I think it was actually meant to be with "luettelo". (?)

Hi,
thanks, for the clarifications!

I see you removed the "luettelo" parts which is supposedly "List" in your
language.
Are you sure about that change?

If you have book with bunch of algorithm codes and you put somewhere into
appendix
list of those, they will be introduced by Algoritmit instead of Algoritmien
luettelo.
Was that intended?

Graphs/Chart/Scheme are for papers written in layout for American Chemical
Society
and apparently they don't even care to show Graph example in their demo
( http://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/achemso/achemso-demo.pdf )
so I think this particular tranaslation is not that important.

That's from linguistics and my understanding something similar to some logic
table.
Likely so specific that using Tableaux in your language is just fine.

Sorry, only had time now to study this further.

Here are the correct translations.

"List of Algorithms"

-> Algoritmit

"List of Charts"

-> Kaaviot

"List of Graphs[[mathematical]]"

I have to admit I didn't understand the difference between charts and
graphs and couldn't find this yet from the GUI. Chart is e.g. a bar/pie
chart? Graph is some other graphical notation for expressing data? This
is confusing without knowing the context. If there is no other
difference, the same translation works:

-> Kaaviot

"List of Schemes"

Apparently this is related to chemistry? Is the 'scheme' like 'Chemical
equation', 'structural formula' or something else? It's hard to
translate this without knowing the context.

"List of Tableaux"

-> Taulukot

Tableaux is just a synonym for tables in french/latin? I tried to google
this but couldn't find any special meaning in LaTeX/LyX other than the
plural form of 'table'.

"Listing"
"Program Listing"

-> Ohjelmalistaus

Basically all 'listings' in LyX use the lstlisting package? From a
translators POV, it's really hard to identify the context, whether we
are listing some generic items or program code.

"List of Listings"
"List of Program Listing"

-> Ohjelmalistaukset

Overtake layout translations from fi.po, ja.po, zh_CN.po

I guess you should make the translators aware of these changes
(if they were aware that those changes will be changed in pdf output).

Yes, I will.

Dear Translators, could you please check that the changes in
lib/layouttranslations
are correct in respect to pdf-output?

French does not seem to be concerned by this call, but I reviewed one more time
the file and I have a doubt about the translation of

"Listings[
]"

Does this refer to the word "Listings" as it appears in the List of Listings (as
the double brackets indicate usually in the po file), or to the "List of
Listings" phrase itself ?

My current transltion is

"Listings[
]" "Liste des listings"

Maybe I should change this to

"Listings[
]" "Listings"

BTW, the translation seems inconsistent in this respect along the different
languages, as far as I can understand.

Simply calling 'make layouttranslations1' overwrites lib/layouttranslations.
You only have to commit afterwards.

No, the target layouttranslations1 implies call to
po/CreateLayoutTranslations.cmake,
which in turn calls 'po/lyx_pot.py -t layouttranslations -o
{top_src_dir}/lib/layouttranslations ... '
The result is then copied to top src dir.

I'm lost and want to learn about this process. How did you generate your
patch "Overtake layout translations"? Did you just happen to see that
updates from po files matched with certain translations in
layouttranslations, so you figured that the layouttranslations
translations should also be updated? i.e. there was no command that you
ran?

At least 'make translations1' works. No, I did not so far. The changes
are because of the fi.po.patch from Jari-Matti Mäkelä.
Again, he should be asked if the new translation are OK for pdf.
But, as I see it, I would not touch lib/layouttranslations in the fi part ATM.
There are still about 2600 untranslated/fuzzy messages in fi.po. Jari-Mati
seems to be willing to work on this if he finds some time.

Jari, what about the following in lib/layouttranslations?

- "List of Algorithms" "Algoritmien luettelo"
- "List of Charts" "Kaavioiden luettelo"
- "List of Graphs[[mathematical]]" "Kuvaajien luettelo"
- "List of Schemes" "Kuvausten luettelo"
- "List of Tableaux" "Taulujen luettelo"
+ "List of Algorithms" "Algoritmit"
+ "List of Charts" "Kaaviot"
+ "List of Graphs[[mathematical]]" "Kaaviot"
+ "List of Schemes" "Kuvaukset"
+ "List of Tableaux" "Taulut"qgit show

The following is wrong (according to Jari, maybe also wrong in fi.po)
- "Listing" "Ohjelmalistaus"
+ "Listing" "Listaus"

Thanks for taking care of this, Kornel. Did you generate the patch with
the following make target?

make layouttranslations1

When I do that on current master, I get the attached patch.
