Had another look around and the following doesn't work, probably because LyX uses babel: \renewcommand{\chaptername}{} However, this does work: \AtBeginDocument{% \addto\captionsenglish{% \renewcommand{chaptername}{}% }} So that's fixed now. Thanks for the pointers. John
