Well - it is not only 94 bit -
It is also Hardy (8.04) for which only 1.6.0 rc3 is available (And I
would prefer not to compile from source).

read anything in the UTF .bib file (so the references dialogue doesn't show
anything) although BibLaTeX can read everything fine and produces
a UTF extended encoding for my Document.

100% yes. I just checked, because I have still version 1.6.0 installed. LyX
