Pavel -- thanks; couldn't go to 1.6.4.2 since I haven't gone to snow yet on my MacBook. I've now found a non-template-based doc that crashes lyx 1.6.4.1. Uninstalling lyx and everything tex; re-installing mactex and lyx 1.6.4.1 didn't help. Found a solution for that non-template doc by
