thank you, finally I managed.
somehow i managed to completely get my installation stuck, so I reinstalled
(with the alternative installer), updated, configured, went to mikeTek
package manager and installed specifically the convington, I just played
around -
most of the documentation concerns Lyx, I didn't understand exactly how to
add packages and why wouldn't they be added and installed on demand,
yes, you're right, it's a GUI for latex. but I don't think I found in the
wiki explicit instructions how to add to mikeTek or install, you know?.. but
maybe i wasn't looking hard enough.

 The linguistics module manual (LyXHelpSpecific ManualsLinguistics
 Manual) lists the extra packages required for the module, and
 Covington is among them. I think the key thing to keep in mind here is
 that LyX is just a gui for LaTeX--even though it is now pretty
 sophisticated, it relies on the LaTeX distribution for certain
 functions.

 You should also have a look at the wiki page:
 http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LinguistLyX . it lists recommended packages
 that aren't always included in default installations.

Unless I have overlooked something, this is not yet possible, unfortunately. 
The InsetLayout does not know OptionalArgs. So the only solution now is the 
one you have chosen.

one is not messing with images for sure). The most simple way is to 
download the archive from

https://savannah.nongnu.org/files/?group=elyxer
and simply copy the elyxer.py file in it to the LyX script folder.
(on Windows, it's something like:
C:\Program Files\LyX 1.6.4\Resources\scripts  ).

Then reconfigure, quit LyX, reopen LyX, try to export.
Perhaps you'll find one that will suit you.

To fix this,
- wait for the next LyX release (LyX 1.6.5 will be available during this 
weekend)
- uninstall LyX 1.6.4 _completely_
- check if Imagemagick is now still in the list of installed programs in 
Windows. If so, uninstall it.
- open an Internet connection and reinstall LyX using the alternative LyX 1.6.5 
for Windows installer

This way you get the latest version of ImageMagick and a new LyX-HTML converter. This converter is 
called eLyXer and works much more stable than tex4ht converter that is the default on in LyX 1.6.4.

When I select View PDF (pdflatex) for a document just created (by  
making changes in an older document and doing Save As), I get this  
error message:


File does not exist:
/var/folders/fM/fMVJAuudF3mykCC-YewvpGq6JHA/-Tmp-/lyx_tmpdir.JL1277/ 
lyx_tmpbuf0/O'HalloranJoe(PhDPhysics).pdf


This does not happen with other lyx files. Any help would be  
appreciated.

latex2html is dead since many years. Better try to use tex4ht. Another option is to use eLyXer: 
http://www.nongnu.org/elyxer/

This is a simple Python script. To get it working properly you need to wait the 
two days for LyX 1.6.5.
If you still prefer latex2html, you should ask in the forums of RedHat since it seems to be a 
configuration problem.

Pavel -- thanks; couldn't go to 1.6.4.2 since I haven't gone to snow 
yet on my MacBook.


I've now found a non-template-based doc that crashes lyx 1.6.4.1.

Uninstalling lyx and everything tex; re-installing mactex and lyx 
1.6.4.1 didn't help.


Found a solution for that non-template doc by opening in 1.6.2 (on a 
G5); eliminating \ensuremath, exporting to tex, importing to 1.6.4.1.


However, template docs still cause trouble in 1.6.4.1 on my MacBook 
-- e.g., I can open a new beamer template maybe 1 time in 10 tries 
without lyx crashing. Just tried again, successfully opened and 
closed a beamer template 3 times in row but then lyx crashed after 
the last close with no other docs open.

adding appendix before Bibliography

After searching the forum I have downloaded a sample file illustrating 
using the appendix package. I want the appendices to come before the 
bibliography


I have added

\usepackage[titletoc]{appendix} to the preamble
and

\begin{appendices} and \end{appendices}


but the example file seems to have these commands wrapped in an 
appendix box, but I can't work out how to do this.


I would appreciate some help.

I usually use Grace (http://plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il/Grace/).

It produces very nice results, is very flexible once you learn it, and is 
supported transparently by LyX: if you install LyX on a computer with Grace 
installed, you can use Grace project files as figures directly.

In any case this comes from the class. Switching to article fixes the issue.

It might be some APA-specific trick.

When I select View PDF (pdflatex) for a document just created (by  
making changes in an older document and doing Save As), I get this  
error message:


File does not exist:
/var/folders/fM/fMVJAuudF3mykCC-YewvpGq6JHA/-Tmp-/lyx_tmpdir.JL1277/ 
lyx_tmpbuf0/O'HalloranJoe(PhDPhysics).pdf


This does not happen with other lyx files. Any help would be  
appreciated.

latex2html is dead since many years. Better try to use tex4ht. Another option is to use eLyXer: 
http://www.nongnu.org/elyxer/

This is a simple Python script. To get it working properly you need to wait the 
two days for LyX 1.6.5.
If you still prefer latex2html, you should ask in the forums of RedHat since it seems to be a 
configuration problem.

Pavel -- thanks; couldn't go to 1.6.4.2 since I haven't gone to snow 
yet on my MacBook.


I've now found a non-template-based doc that crashes lyx 1.6.4.1.

Uninstalling lyx and everything tex; re-installing mactex and lyx 
1.6.4.1 didn't help.


Found a solution for that non-template doc by opening in 1.6.2 (on a 
G5); eliminating \ensuremath, exporting to tex, importing to 1.6.4.1.


However, template docs still cause trouble in 1.6.4.1 on my MacBook 
-- e.g., I can open a new beamer template maybe 1 time in 10 tries 
without lyx crashing. Just tried again, successfully opened and 
closed a beamer template 3 times in row but then lyx crashed after 
the last close with no other docs open.

adding appendix before Bibliography

After searching the forum I have downloaded a sample file illustrating 
using the appendix package. I want the appendices to come before the 
bibliography


I have added

\usepackage[titletoc]{appendix} to the preamble
and

\begin{appendices} and \end{appendices}


but the example file seems to have these commands wrapped in an 
appendix box, but I can't work out how to do this.


I would appreciate some help.

I've read there should be support for Octave (for example) but couldn't find

I usually use Grace (http://plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il/Grace/).

It produces very nice results, is very flexible once you learn it, and is 
supported transparently by LyX: if you install LyX on a computer with Grace 
installed, you can use Grace project files as figures directly.

removing [titletoc] from the load package line seems to let it work.

thank you, finally I managed.
somehow i managed to completely get my installation stuck, so I reinstalled
(with the alternative installer), updated, configured, went to mikeTek
package manager and installed specifically the convington, I just played
around -
most of the documentation concerns Lyx, I didn't understand exactly how to
add packages and why wouldn't they be added and installed on demand,
yes, you're right, it's a GUI for latex. but I don't think I found in the
wiki explicit instructions how to add to mikeTek or install, you know?.. but
maybe i wasn't looking hard enough.

Unless I have overlooked something, this is not yet possible, unfortunately. 
The InsetLayout does not know OptionalArgs. So the only solution now is the 
one you have chosen.

last month. Try the latest version (should be 0.37) and try 0.34 (this 
one is not messing with images for sure). The most simple way is to 
download the archive from

https://savannah.nongnu.org/files/?group=elyxer
and simply copy the "elyxer.py" file in it to the LyX script folder.
(on Windows, it's something like:
C:\Program Files\LyX 1.6.4\Resources\scripts  ).

Then reconfigure, quit LyX, reopen LyX, try to export.
Perhaps you'll find one that will suit you.

which package to install.

I usually use Grace (http://plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il/Grace/).

It produces very nice results, is very flexible once you learn it, and is 
supported transparently by LyX: if you install LyX on a computer with Grace 
installed, you can use Grace project files as figures directly.

OK,

The appendix box was a red herring as this wasn't what I wanted and 
removing [titletoc] from the load package line seems to let it work.
