An error has ocurred when I was installing LyX on Mac OS

2010-10-27 Thread Eduardo Ruiz

Good morning,

I was installing Lyx. I have no problem moving LyX application icon to
Applications. But when I ran LyX-Installer an error ocurred.

The message of error was:

Cannot run texhash command to updateTeX Installation. Please run
manually.

I don't know what happens but I don't know what I have to do!

Please, sorry, for my English!

Thanks a lot!

You're trying to install LyX-1.6.7?

I'd guess, you have no LaTeX installation on your system?
Then you have to add it, e.g. MacTeX.
It's mentioned here: http://www.lyx.org/Download.

Hope that helps.

If you have installed the package in MikTex, you should be able to

Have you installed TeX first? (It's a requirement for LyX to produce
output.) If not, you need to. I'd recommend MacTeX:

You will need to be a bit more specific about what is going wrong. You

btw, I am using LyX version 1.6.7,so the path idicated in the first

Yes, you are looking in the correct place. Note that if you have all
the LaTeX packages used by the document installed on every machine where
you work, you do not need to copy any LaTeX files into your work

again: nomenclature convertion

2010-10-27 Thread Wolfgang Engelmann
I had posted earlier already a nomenclature Error
(was: Error 84 returned from iconv when converting from UCS-4LE to
ISO-8859-15:)
and filed a bug.

I ran now into another such case, this time just a comma
(see in the following)
subkutan von lateinisch sub‚ unter und ...
---^---

again the error occurs only if the character is in a glossary item, not, if it
is in normal text of the document.

as far as I understand the bug reports, it won't be fixed for the time beeing.

So my question is, how can I check a text for unsuited coding of characters?
Taking away half of the text, check the remaining for the error to occur or
not, and so on takes quite some time, especially if it turns finally out to
be just a comma.

Tennessee Carmel-Veilleux recommended the program regexbuddy. Or are there
alternatives?

Thanks,

Wolfgang

This MiKTeX bug won't be fixed, because it is not in the brand new

If you want, answer in german :-)

\end{document}

My first step was to do this:
\newenvironment{tikzpictureNew}
{\begin{tikzpicture}}
{ ; \end{tikzpicture}}    %  " ; " Semicolon!

It works, so I can use environment with the needed semicolon

But I can not do this:
\newenvironment{childNEW}
{ child{   }
{       }  }
to use environment and after that to use nesting in lyx :-)
I think - one step to have it.

Did your friend have everything involved (parent document, all child documents,

you could send him everything (or, if he is unwilling, zip it all up and
send it to me). It's possible the bug requires extra pieces to manifest. If

Also, is there anything special you have to do to trigger the bug, or is
it enough to park the cursor near the end of the chapter and hit F7 (which is
what I did)?

It is a derivative of my thesis template. Of course every University has its own thesis layout.
Therefore the thesis template is designed to give the user a basic feeling how a thesis will look
like. The template can easily be modified to fulfill the requirements of every university.
For example to get the structure of your thesis template can be achieved by moving Acknowledgements
etc. to the backmatter.

You need to have LyX 2.0alpha6 (or wait for LyX 2.0 beta1) and then look at the thesis template. I'm
open for every annotation. What do you think should be changed or simplified?

 Subject: relative path for images
 Hello to all,

 this is surely a very simple question, but I'm a total no-geek and is
 driving me crazy.

 I want to change the absolute path of the figures that I insert (the 90% of
 them as a float) to a relative path, since I'm working from differents
 computers and syncing the files with dropbox. I have found precisely this
 info in these help files, but I'm doing something wrong, since it is not
 working as expected.

This is *exactly* the way I'm writing my thesis. It works fine, though I
won't call it elegant. If it's safe to assume your document and image files
all live within a shared logical root in your Dropbox directory, and all
.lyx files will be in either the single directory or a uniform directory
structure, you can just edit the file path of the target image in the
Graphics dialogue. That is,
+ doc root is /Users/justin/Dropbox/_PhD/thesis
+ image files are then under thesis/_src/images/
+ lyx files are in structure thesis/chapters/ch1/

So once inserting the image file through the Graphics dialogue in an example
file under thesis/chapters/ch1/chapter1.lyx — which will use the full,
system-specific file path — you then edit it to be a relative path. If
example image file is

then it should be changed to traverse (in my case) two directories back to

Hope that makes sense.

Re: announce: template to write Ph.D. theses with LyX

2010-10-27 Thread Waluyo Adi Siswanto
 It is a derivative of my thesis template. Of course every University has its
 own thesis layout. Therefore the thesis template is designed to give the
 user a basic feeling how a thesis will look like. The template can easily be
 modified to fulfill the requirements of every university.
 For example to get the structure of your thesis template can be achieved by
 moving Acknowledgements etc. to the backmatter.

Actually all lists in my thesis template is in frontmatter, I guess
you mean frontmatter.

Anyway, in users perspective; it might be useful if the lyx templates
are grouped into three types (folders): articles, books, and theses.
When users open new documents from templates, they will see three
folders.

We have already various article templates, but don't have thesis and
books. So my suggestion, under thesis and books there are also several
examples. Users can choose which one they can start with to customize.

However, this just a suggestion that could be considered by developers.

PS: I put cc to developers list.

Then you have to add it, e.g. MacTeX.

Have you installed TeX first? (It's a requirement for LyX to produce

Yes, you are looking in the correct place. Note that if you have all
the LaTeX packages used by the document installed on every machine where

again: nomenclature convertion

Thanks,

Wolfgang

If you want, answer in german :-)

following just the minimum example

OK, here is my example (child{} has to be nested):
I want to do this in Lyx:

\documentclass[a4paper]{scrartcl}
\usepackage{tikz}

\begin{document}

\begin{tikzpicture}

\node

  child {node {links}}
  child {node {rechts}
     child {node
  {unterpunkt}}

  }
;\end{tikzpicture}

\end{document}

My first step was to do this:
\newenvironment{tikzpictureNew}
{\begin{tikzpicture}}
{ ; \end{tikzpicture}}    %  " ; " Semicolon!

It works, so I can use environment with the needed semicolon

But I can not do this:
\newenvironment{childNEW}
{ child{   }
{       }  }
to use environment and after that to use nesting in lyx :-)
I think - one step to have it.
Can anyone help me out?

Did your friend have everything involved (parent document, all child documents,

you could send him everything (or, if he is unwilling, zip it all up and

If
example image file is
/Users/justin/Dropbox/_PhD/thesis/_src/images/AR4/Fig7.20-aerosol_effects_schematic-semi-direct.png

then it should be changed to traverse (in my case) two directories back to
the shared root using the standard OS ../ pointer.
*
../../*_src/images/AR4/Fig7.20-aerosol_effects_schematic-semi-direct.png

Hope that makes sense.

 btw, I am using LyX version 1.6.7,so the path idicated in the first link:
 Layout
 - Document - Praeamble, is the same as Document - Settings - LaTeX
 Preamble, which is the only one I've found ?

"Cannot run texhash command to updateTeX Installation. Please run
manually."

I've been playing bridge all night last evening, so I might be able to help you.

If you have installed the package in MikTex, you should be able to

Have you installed TeX first? (It's a requirement for LyX to produce
output.) If not, you need to. I'd recommend MacTeX:

You will need to be a bit more specific about what is going wrong. You
might also try posting a _small_ example document that does not work

Yes, you are looking in the correct place. Note that if you have all
the LaTeX packages used by the document installed on every machine where
you work, you do not need to copy any LaTeX files into your work
directory. The advice in the first link refers only to LaTeX packages
that exist only on one of the machines.

I've MacTeX with TeXLive-2009 installed here - but it should be similar (I
hope)...

In Terminal.app I can do:
% which texhash

texhash: Updating /usr/local/texlive/2009/texmf-dist/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /usr/local/texlive/2009/texmf-var/ls-R...

That's what the hint "Cannot run texhash command to updateTeX Installation.
Please run manually." suggests.

again: nomenclature convertion

Thanks,

Wolfgang

This is a bug in MiKTeX, see

The workaround is:
1. start a command prompt window as administrator

3. run: initexmf -u

This MiKTeX bug won't be fixed, because it is not in the brand new

implement nested commands in *.layout or *.modul

If you want, answer in german :-)

following just the minimum example

OK, here is my example (child{} has to be nested):
I want to do this in Lyx:

\documentclass[a4paper]{scrartcl}
\usepackage{tikz}

\begin{document}

\begin{tikzpicture}

\node
{Oberster Punkt}
  child {node {links}}
  child {node {rechts}
     child {node
  {unterpunkt}}

  }
;\end{tikzpicture}

\end{document}

My first step was to do this:
\newenvironment{tikzpictureNew}
{\begin{tikzpicture}}
{ ; \end{tikzpicture}}    %  " ; " Semicolon!

It works, so I can use environment with the needed semicolon

But I can not do this:
\newenvironment{childNEW}
{ child{   }
{       }  }
to use environment and after that to use nesting in lyx :-)
I think - one step to have it.
Can anyone help me out?

Did your friend have everything involved (parent document, all child documents,
all image files etc.) or just what you posted here? If the latter, perhaps
you could send him everything (or, if he is unwilling, zip it all up and
send it to me). It's possible the bug requires extra pieces to manifest. If
he (or I) still cannot reproduce it, it probably is something unique to your
system.

Also, is there anything special you have to do to trigger the bug, or is
it enough to park the cursor near the end of the chapter and hit F7 (which is
what I did)?

The zipped document appears to have changed a bit -- in the image you provided
with your original post, the source window shows the cursor being the "Quantum
correlations" subsection heading, with that listed as paragraph 124 in the
document. It's paragraph 150 now. Perhaps more importantly, the banner for the
LyX window in the picture shows "(version control, locking)". I have no idea
whether that impacts the bug, but I cannot reproduce the version control lock
here, and perhaps neither could your friend. What happens if you open the
document without version control? (You might run the zipped copy from your
post.) If the bug does not manifest there, but continues to manifest with
version control, then version control is part of the problem. Other than that,
I'm stumped. I take it this does not happen with other documents?

Hi Uwe

What would be the LyX thesis template in LyX 2.0, there will be only
one example based on your template or from others too..
I have prepared recently a thesis template in book(koma-script),
documented here:
http://sites.google.com/site/lyxthesistemplate
however the structure and the format are different with yours.
There are also some different formats from other universities found in
lyx wiki thesis example.

I am just wondering, how can I contribute and participate in providing
thesis example?

Sorry for joining this discussion as I think this is relevant.

You need to have LyX 2.0alpha6 (or wait for LyX 2.0 beta1) and then look at the thesis template. I'm
open for every annotation. What do you think should be changed or simplified?

Sorry for joining this discussion as I think this is relevant.

You're welcome.

Hi, I have not solved problem yet. I've done the following, I created the
file in lyx and then I exported as Latex (simple). The person who resive
this arhive. Tex see"??" in lieu of reference which I have done in the tex.
The literature also does not appear when he open this file. tex. What I can
do? Someone could help me?

Did you create the list of references using some bibliography manager,
like JabRef? If so, then you need also to send the person the *.bib
file, which you have referenced in the Bibliography inset.

Richard

Thank you very much

Hi, I need to send a document produced by lyx in latex format (. tex).
The option of "save as" is not available. But I'm wondering if copying
the
source code that is producing lyx in a simple text file to save as tex
type
could be works for people who receive it. Do Citations, cross
references,
floating and other lyx procedures work?

Thanks in advance

Specifically, File>Export>LaTeX, where there are two choices for that.

Be careful, LyX do not allows you to select the place where that file
should be exported, so if you have pictures or other stuff included,
all preprocessed files will be put into the same directory structure,
so as an effect you will get messy mix of your sources and results.

If
example image file is
/Users/justin/Dropbox/_PhD/thesis/_src/images/AR4/Fig7.20-aerosol_effects_schematic-semi-direct.png

then it should be changed to traverse (in my case) two directories back to
the shared root using the standard OS "../" pointer.
*
../../*_src/images/AR4/Fig7.20-aerosol_effects_schematic-semi-direct.png

Hope that makes sense.
