sidecap
I try to use the sidecap package to get the legend of my figure at the side. I do get the desired position of the caption if I use the pdf output of the embedded objects lyx file However, including the (what I think important) document preferences: ### \usepackage{sidecap} % Definitionen um Legenden neben Tabellen und Abbildungen zu setzen \newcommand{\TabBesBeg}[1][1.0]{% \let\MyTable\table \let\MyEndtable\endtable \renewenvironment{table}[1]{\begin{SCtable}[#1]##1}{\end{SCtable}}} \newcommand{\TabBesEnd}{% \let\table\MyTable \let\endtable\MyEndtable} \newcommand{\FigBesBeg}[1][1.0]{% \let\MyFigure\figure \let\MyEndfigure\endfigure \renewenvironment{figure}[1]{\begin{SCfigure}[#1]##1}{\end{SCfigure}}} \newcommand{\FigBesEnd}{% \let\figure\MyFigure \let\endfigure\MyEndfigure} ### and inserting \FigBesBeg figure (as "Embedded Object) {\FigBesEnd} in the text does not give me the sidecap. The terminal output does not tell me anything conspicious: Running: pdflatex "EmbeddedObjects.tex" > /dev/null This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (TeX Live 2013) restricted \write18 enabled. entering extended mode (./EmbeddedObjects.tex LaTeX2e <2011/06/27> Babel <3.9f> and hyphenation patterns for 78 languages loaded. Running: xdg-open "EmbeddedObjects.pdf" What am I missing? Wolfgang

Guess what. It crashed on first trial. LOL Oh, for information: this is the LyX users list. And not the MiKTeX users list… Regards, Stephan

It is available for Windows too (just look on Ctan). Perhaps it'll solve some of your problems. I mean, what did you expect people to do when you said "it's windows problem"? Does that give any concrete solution or workaround?

So your *good* experience is a fluke, you lucky guy :) In another instance, ie in another Win7 64bit, I tried to define its compatibility to Vista and it worked. That means the setup has not been modified since prehistory (I mean 2006, more than 8 years ago)?? > but discovered that biber was missing from that distro -- evidently the > 64-bit distro is still "experimental" -- so I went back to the 32-bit > MiKTeX 2.9 (the Basic distribution of 160 MB or so, and then added the > packages detailed under LaTeX Configuration in LyX's Help menu). I would certainly avoid using it if there's alternative LaTeX distribution.

I once had problem installing VMware Workstation in an updated version in my Windows XP. But the problem was resolved in the next updated version. But the key word here is *in the past*!! That is to say I totally disagree with you! Come on, we are already in 2014! Windows 7 has been released more than 4 years ago. Don't they have enough time to fix problem in their setup during all this time? Saying that it's windows problem is purely a lame excuse. If they are unable to adapt, that simply mean they are not good enough. QED. Thinking about evolution, if a species is unable to adapt to its environment, it's damned to disappear soon. I would bet this "natural selection law" also applies here. And don't give me the lame excuse that because it's free, it has to have problem. There are myriads of free programs out there in the Internet, most of them don't have problem. Why did they manage to do so? "Skillful people fix things immediately. Unskillful people give excuse immediately and blame the wrongs on others."
