Re: Align Table and Graph
The two minipages way worked with a little tweak of the table (had to add some vertical and horizontal space at the beginning of the table to put in place), but the ColumnsTopAligned didn't. For the two minipages, you have to set the table minipage aligment settings to TOP;TOP, while for the graph minipage you have to set them to CENTER;TOP. Thanks guys. appendix heading in TOC without pagenumber
Hello, I am having a little problem using the appendix package in an extbook document. What I want to do is to have an Appendix heading appear in the TOC, with no page number, just before the first Appendix. I have these lines just before the first appendix like it says in the appendix package documentation. \appendix \addappheadtotoc \noappendicestocpagenum The result is that there is an Appendix heading, however a) there is a page number to it b) the page number is wrong, as it corresponds to the page number of the previous chapter*, in this case the Acknowledgements. It seems like the command \noappendicestocpagenum has no effect for some reason. Does anybody know why and how I can go around this? Thanks in advance. I have these lines just before the first appendix like it says in the appendix package documentation. \appendix \addappheadtotoc \noappendicestocpagenum Turns out that the \noappendicestocpagenum must come *before* the \addappheadtotoc command, though the documentation does not say so. Although the emphasized word appears in italics in LyX, it is upright in the PDF output. I've tried ERT \emph{word} and ERT \textit{word} with no success. Then I've tried ERT \it{word} which worked, unfortunately, it also changed all the other words of the rest of the title ... I use LyX 1.4.4 on Mac with article(koma) and the Title environment. Hi Bennett, since your file worked fine on my system, too, I tried to track down the culprit and it seems that it's the document setting on font ae. When I switched to palatino, it was ok. pass options to subfigure (or other package loaded automatically)
Hey everybody, I'm quite new to LyX, so please bear with me here. I checked the documentation and Google (which apparently does not know everything), but could not find the answer to the following situation. I have a document where I use subfigures. So I used the subfigure option in LyX, put a caption and everything works perfect. But I'm a freak and I insist on my captions being centered--which is not the default in LaTeX and for subfigures, even if you use \centering or load the ccaption package (ccaption deals with the figure captions, but not the subfigure ones). In pure LaTeX, I would load the subfigure package with the center option. But if I try to do that in LyX, I get an error of conflicting options, because LyX already loads subfigure, but with no options. So now we come to my question: Is there any way to tell LyX to load a package that it loads by default with certain options? I guess the same would hold for other packages (like natbib, for instance). Lyx article on OSNews
http://www.osnews.com/story.php/17373/Lyx-the-Multi-Platform-Document-Editor/ I wrote a quick overview of Lyx for tech news site OSNews. It's not a comprehensive overview as I decided to focus on some of the features that I personally make the most use of. Most of the article was written in 1.5.0beta. I started it in 1.4.4 while 1.5.0beta was compiling in the background (although I had some experience with 1.5.0SVN). OSNews require submissions to be web ready with only a subset of tags. I use the following converter string to export 2.0 HTML. noexist $$i ;latex2html -no_auto_link -no_navigation -html_version 2.0 -no_subdir -info 0 --split 0 $$i At that point, I still have to do a bit of hand editing. To begin with, OSNews don't accept h1 etc tags so I have to change them to b tags instead. As I am working with mark-up, this isn't a big deal as I can simply do a find and replace on H1 to change it to B. OSNews require that the HTML have no line breaks in the middle of paragraphs. Basically, using Kwrite, I have to highlight each paragraph by hand and do a ctrl+j on it to make it into one line. Another problem is that the html exporter creates paragraphs that open with P but with not corrisponding /P tag to close. This isn't strictly in keeping with the OSNews submissions guidelines but they have not complained so far (four articles for that site). I added plain English remarks to indicate where I wanted the images to be inserted. I have to hand add HTML hyper links as I have not found a tool that can export them intact from HTML. I usually add them as hypertext URLs from within Lyx and then hand correct them in the text editor. Quick tip for anyone who might be attempting a similar exercise in Lyx: don't be tempted to hand create section headings with the bold attribute to ease HTML conversion. I made that mistake with an earlier, 6,000 word article. In short, I ended up going through hell on earth, simply to save five minutes of search and replace and hand-checking at the end. BTW, I also used a mind mapping tool called Kdissert to plan the article. Lyx 1-4-4 neglects .eps bounding box?

Thus, only the figure was seen in Lyx the a4 page was not. However, Lyx-1-4-4 apparently neglects the bounding box created by the above method, and both in Lyx and Yap the whole a4 page is visible with the wanted figure in the middle. Do you have any idea that can help? I usually draw with OpenOffice Draw program. This can export the figures to .eps files but the dashed lines below 1 pt are pale or not visible. help with citations (jurabib package)
Can anyne help me with the jurabib package? I believe it is this package I need to use to get citations for a thesis in the style of the humanities. Specifically, I need to have my citations in endnotes. The first endnote would look like this: Plunket-Powell, Karen. Remembering Woolworth's. (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1999), 51. If the thesis cited Plunket-Powell for the next reference, but on page 52, it should look like this; ibid, 52. If the thesis then cited the same author and the same page, it should look like this: ibid. I have looked at the jurabib documentation and the most I can get get is for the ibids to come out like: Plunket-Powell ibid, 52. I don't need the author there. I am not having a problem getting the endnotes to work. (I could also use another package and simpy put the citation in an \endnote.) (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1999)} Then when I want to put in citation, I tell LyX to insert a footnote, and use ert to type: \Cite[, pg 51.]{\PlunketPowell} In order to get ibid to work, I have to export the file to latex and then run a python script, which checks the preceding reference, and if it finds the same author, it uses ibid. I would feel better not having to hack the document this way, especially the part that uses the python script.
Lyx 1.5.0 beta1 screen fonts antialiasing?
Hi, I am using Red Hat EL4, Qt 4.2.2 and Lyx 1.5.0 beta1. Comparing to the old Lyx 1.4.3, version 1.5.0 looks lacking of the anti-aliasing processing on the screen fonts. While in 1.4.3 the screen fonts look pretty smooth, those in 1.5.0 have fractures or spikes and that made them unclear, even though I tried switching the screen fonts several times. My 1.4.3 and 1.5.0 runs on the same computer. I don't know if that's the problem of QT4 or Lyx, or could I set some preference to have the anti-aliasing back? Thank you. best, Sam
Maybe the problem is Beamer? Play with the alignment of the mini-pages. With beamer, you have control on the columns alignment, AFAIR (there is a ColumnsTopAligned style). appendix heading in TOC without pagenumber
Picture of the mind map here: http://www.rhyder.34sp.com/lyx_tree.png As ever, much gratitude to the Lyx team. -- http://www.unmusic.co.uk - about me, music, geek sitcom etc. http://www.unmusic.co.uk/amhs/ - alt.music.home-studio

I also tried the methods given in Lyx wiki but none of them gave really good results, there were problems with the line thicknesses. help with citations (jurabib package)
(I could also use another package and simpy put the citation in an \endnote.) Paul PS Right now I have hacked the document to get it to work. \let\footnote=\endnote \newcommand{\Cite}[2][]{#2#1} % I will have many of these references \newcommand{\PlunketPowell}{Plunket-Powell, Karen. \emph{Remembering Woolworth's}. (New York: St.
Thank you. best, Sam
I am using Lyx 1.4.3 in Debian Etch. -- Alexandru Cabuz Doctoral Student Université Montpellier II France Tel: +33 (0)4.67.14.47.34 --- Please no Word or Powerpoint attachments. Re: appendix heading in TOC without pagenumber

Now it works. Dear list, sorry to have bothered you. -- Alexandru Cabuz Doctoral Student Université Montpellier II France Tel: +33 (0)4.67.14.47.34 --- Please no Word or Powerpoint attachments. LyX shows the related keyboard shortcuts in the status bar. Why the heck I never noticed this? Maybe this is an indicator that tool-tips would do better to achieve user-awareness. But maybe it has to be considered as an indicator that the user (me) was a bit dumb :-o Daniel

Good to know :-) What about document compatibility? I know that 1.5 has a new document format which probably can not be read by 1.4.x However, can I use the old (1.4.x) format with the new version as well? I have to collaborate with users who are still using 1.4.x... Daniel
Re: documentation of Lyx1.5
Wolfgang Engelmann wrote: > Is the documentation of Lyx1.5 available without downloading the new > version? I understand it has been changed considerably Not really. The biggest change (the new embedded objects manual) is also in 1.4.4, the other changes are mostly tiny bits related to new or changed features. Georg

I have to collaborate with users who are still using 1.4.x... This should work without problems if you don't use any of the new features. If you use a new feature and export in the old format the conversion might ignore the new feature (e.g. booktabs tables) or not convert it completely or convert it to ERT. If you are using 1.5 for production work please be aware that it is still beta software, so make frequent backups etc. Georg

What this means is that the feature is not designed correctly... As the feature is already implemented in some way, would it be possible with little effort to have tooltips instead of status line information? Combined with an option to switch off this behaviour in the preferences, this could help to make new (and not so new) users of the keyboard shortcuts. Regards, Dominik.-

lyx and apa
hi there, i'm having problems getting apa and apacite packages to run with lyx. i've installed both packages correctly, lyx and latex are finding them (verified via "view > tex informations" in lyx) but i cannot choose "article (APA)" under "format > document". what am i doing wrong? i've re-hashed tex, done a configure and re-started lyx several times. i'm using lyx 1.4.3 under linux (kubuntu 6.10 edgy). thanks in advance, rob
Single emphasized word in a long title
Hi all, I've run into a little but bugging problem. I'm trying to write a single word in italics in the title of an article and all other words of the title upright. Thanks Deane Harder

Re: Single emphasized word in a long title
Hi Bennett, since your file worked fine on my system, too, I tried to track down the culprit and it seems that it's the document setting on font "ae". When I switched to palatino, it was ok. Are there no italics in ae? I used this font because it was recommended on the LyX on Mac Wiki page. Thanks again Deane

pass options to subfigure (or other package loaded automatically)
You can always pass an option to a package by délaring it as a class option Document->Settings->Document Class->options But it will be passed to any package understanding it...
