I am doing some part time study and for my assignments I have been writing them up using LyX. some of the parts of questions that I answer end up in the format 1) i) a) b) ii) 2) 3) i) or similar. For my first assignment I was using enumerate with some holding text and the numbers did

I just confirmed that on Mint (Linux), LyX 1.6.4 ignores the personal dictionary setting when using aspell. (I did not try any other spelling checkers.) There also appear to be a couple of other bugs involving the associated dialog. I've reported all the bugs. Meanwhile, as Stephen said,

I'd suggest you delete your fledgling layout file (you were on the right track, but you need more detail than just the header), then have a look at the LyX layout file provided at http://www.scss.tcd.ie/Eamonn.Linehan/code-latex.php. Modify Dr. Linehan's layout file to point to your thesis .cls
