I got no answers there and maybe there are some French speaking users subscribed 
to lyx-users and not to lyx-fr.


This said, the questions in the two last messages  are less important since the 
developers abandoned the export in LaTeX of these strings which are mostly used 
in English speaking documents (achemso or agu papers). But the need for the 
interface itself remains.


The first question about the translation of Aknowledgement in Theorems AMS is 
still important for the 2.0 release.

babel.


I asked him about the inconsitency, and more generally about the translation of 
'table' in French.

and 'tableau' which have not exactly the same meaning, table is more informal 
(one would not say e.g. 'tableau de matières' for toc), but in most situations 
where a table is a presentation of numerical results, the word 'tableau' is more

'table' for each individual caption, but was reluctant to change it mainly

Figure and Tableau, so he may be convinced.


He suggested to raise the question on fr.comp.text.tex, but I declined the 
proposal because I guess I will end wity 50/50 rating between table and tableau, 
not to speak of possible flame wars.


Anyway, even in the present situation, the correct instructions to change the 
captions and more generally the layouttranslations strings should be provided in 
the LyX doc, in the line of the recent answer I made to an user on the lyx-fr 
list (sorry, this is in French):

To conclude, currently LyX knows 'tableau' as the standard homogeneous 
translation for the table environment in the GUI, that's why I think it would be 
more correct to provide an homogeneous translation in the  LaTeX output, with 
accompanying appropriate explanations (in the French version).

Here are the strings present in frenchb.ldf and in the first version of

Btw, there are some peculiarities that the mechanism is unable to manage, like

babel about the translation of table:

(\def\tablename{{\scshape Tableau}} would be better IMHO),
so I would have preferred LyX to overwrite babel defaults to make them

pdfpages is a great package to do this, you may even keep the headers and
foiters of the main document.
You can stay in LyX to do it, just use TeX code to call pdfpages command
and arguments. You will need to dig a little bit in the doc to tune the result
to your needs.

Contrast in the preamble window

In the Document->Settings->Preamble window, the comments are greyed out in such
a way that they are quite difficult to read when one wants to uncomment some
piece of code.

Is there a way to tune the foreground color for the strings after % in that
window ?

Shortcut conflicts in the French interface

While editing an example file for crossref implementations in LyX,
I found a couple of shortcut conflicts I had overlooked (in math context 
menus, like

Menus.cpp(587): Menu warning: menu entries "Ajouter une ligne
au-dessus|A" and "Environnement AMS|A" share the same shortcut.

If you are aware of such conflicts, please post me the messages that you 
may see in the command window from which you started LyX (on Linux, I 
don't know where to see these messages on Windows).

Compilation error in French with varioref and hyperref

Hello,

With my installation, I get an error when creating the pdf version of 
the UserGuide, that I narrowed down to the attached simple example.


Before taking into consideration the solution that I proposed (the 
source code must be patched), the developers would like to understand 
why nobody ever posted about this bug.


Would you be so kind to load the attached file in lyx and try to view it 
as PDF, then to feed back the result ?

I used to cat the text in a file and to \input it in the LyX window.

In a more sophisticated way, I also used to build tables in latex code
in the external app where the calculations are made: if you find a typo in the
external code, you have just to run the external batch, run LyX
from the command line and you're done (you may have to review your
comments about the data however :-). That's a kind of offline mimic
of the inline data update offered by some text processing tools.

This makes a lot of auxiliary files: with the new embedded feature
developed by Bo Peng for 1.6, it won't be a problem any more.

Menu fonts

Hello Lyx users

After installing 1.5.0 on Solaris, I get fonts in the LyX window as simple serif
fonts, which are ugly.

I can easily turn these in my usual screen fonts using Tools->Preferences.

But the menu fonts are also ugly. How can I change them ?
I did not find anything in the doc.

I support this remark, it looks like a real regression: I strongly miss

Does Ctrl-Arrow keys help ?
Once upon a time, Mark on (Ctrl-@) was useful to select over pages, 
but I don't recollect how it worked.

A colleague of mine found no other way than uninstall SW, install LyX,
reinstall SW (keeping fonts previously installed by LyX).

In fact, secure mode was the default with previous versions, but it did not
include absolute or relative (..) path check.

The important point here is that the path is absolute.

If you're using TeXLive-2005, the dvips default behaviour has
shifted to secure: in particular, dvips won't accept absolute paths,
which LyX uses in the temporary.
You should run dvips -R0 in the Preference->Converter section, where dvips
is involved, to come back to unsecure mode.

If you're not admin, maybe this has been changed on your TeX distribution,
which could explain how it could work again magically.

In which shell does LyX run latex ?

Hello,

I have LyX installed on a Debian with two latex distributions:
 - teTeX-2.0 deb package
 - TeXLive-2004

I work under tcsh, and set the PATH so that TeXLive bin comes
before teTeX binaries.

LyX reconfigure finds TeXLive OK, and all worked fine.

Recently it appeared that LyX runs teTeX in the background,
the only changes I can think of  is a regular apt-get upgrade
and a download of the tex2lyx deb package, after which I 
pasted all LyX-1.4/share/lyx/lyx2lyx/*.py scripts in /usr/share/lyx/lyx2lyx.

I strongly suspect this last operation to be responsible fro the problem.
Any confirmation ?
This seems related to another question I posted a few weeks ago
about the htlatex compilation phase.
I've seen a general wrapper in the scripts dir: coould it explain
why my PATH env variable seems not seen by the LyX internals ?

Useful if you have everyting OK with latex and want a pdf.
Makes it hyperreffered on the fly (good for papers,
which have no toc: you get it in the left column for free,
as well as all the crossrefs).

Moreover, the typography is provided by global optimization program
which computes the layout, whatever the importance of the change
(i.e. changing a character or restructuring completely the document).

You must get confidence in this program (thanks to D. E. Knuth),
as it provides very good layout in any case, and never left me with badly
presented documents since I use LaTeX, directly or through LyX.

In that line document layout checks are not that frequent, mostly
during the last fine tuning (figure placement, widows and orphans, etc).
LyX helps much because it gives an idea of the layouts of the components
(math, tables, figures) inside a clear understanding of the document
structure (navigation menu, sectioning).

So you can *really* concentrate on content...

I guess they want to keep it installable from CD, like in 2004.
(i.e. not compressed, as protext-1.3).

I think the discussion will be more thorough when the dvd/cd collection
will be out. The TeXLive images are currently test images, and the official
TeXLive is still 2004.

The TeXLive DVD/CD comes with 2 different distributions:
 - on the DVD, a TeXLive-2005 installable on many platforms (including
Windows);
 - on the CD, a ProTeXt-2005 self-extracting version.

I guess protext-1.3.iso (a zip file) will be one of the CDs
of the nest TeXLive-2005 distro. Did you get it by download or from
the dvd/cd ?

OK so protext-1.3 does not seem in sync with TexLive-2005.

In fact I created an iso image of all the Windows executable needed
by LyX (with protext-1.2, I use only the miktex part there, just unzip
and install), to provide autonomous LyX installation from CD.
It's a near miss to have the miktex.exe unzipped, but no way, the
size is over 700Mb in that case (454 w/protext-1.2).

A version of MikTeX (called ProTeXt) packaged with files of TeXLive
first came out with the 2004 TexLive distribution.
Since then ProTeXt grows with its own version numbering
(two releases since TeXLive-2004, the second one very recent).
Should we understand this recent release of protext-1.3 as the MikTeX
equivalent of TeXLive-2005 ?

In that case, the self-extracting and self-installing feature
of ProTeXt may fit better than TeXLive with the LyX Windows installation
procedure, to get the same version of packages.

Compared to the small, medium and large MikTeX installations, ProTeXt
seems more complete (near 400Mo compressed, near 700 ready to install).
Unless you like (and can) load the packages on the fly, it's worth spending
an hour to get everything handy.
