It is possible to use fncychap with KOMA-book, even if not recommended. The
warning is caused by fncychap that uses the depreciated command /rm. To
avoid the warning insert these lines after the loading of fncychap in the
Preamble:
\ChTitleVar{\bfseries\Large\rmfamily}\ChNameVar{\bfseries\Large\sffamily}
Depending on style you might need to adjust the size of the font.
The recommended solution is, as Jürgen suggests, to explore the
possibilities of the KOMA-Book.

Strange xxx-lyxformat-474.lyx files
I work on several projects in LyX. Lately I have noticed that in the same folders as my .lyx files there is a second file called -lyxformat-474.lyx. For instance, if the regular file is called xxx.lyx. The second is called xxx-lyxformat-474.lyx. The 474.lyx files seems to be old versions of the regular files. I have no idea how och when the 474 files were created, certainly not by me. The only major tampering I have done lately is upgrading to LyX 2.2. I am on *Buntu 16.04 with LyX stable ppa added. Does anyone know what he 474 files are, and if it is OK to delete them?

Possible error in packages in the LyX Ubuntu ppa
I use the LyX devel release ppa ( https://launchpad.net/~lyx-devel/+archive/release) in (K)ubuntu 14.04. LyX wants to upgrade to LyX 2.1 but I recieve this error message during the installation process: /var/cache/apt/archives/lyx_2.1.0-1~trusty~ppa2_amd64.deb trying to overwrite '/usr/share/applications/lyx.desktop', which is also in package lyx-common 2.1.0-1~trusty~ppa2 The installation is interrupted and LyX not installed. I have tried to clean apt and purge the files before installation but the problem remains. Is there a package error in the new files or am I doing something wrong? I can try to get more information from the terminal and the apt command if needed, I just have to teach it speak English first.

I work in Lund and use LyX every day. I can make a try, but I have little knowledge of Macs (Linux user), so I can't guarantee success. I suppose LyX will be the same, but the TeX system vill be different to set up. I converted all files to plain text and imported them to LyX. I tested some conversion tools from LibO to LaTeX, but I think it is faster to use plain .txt. I could not produce the ps file in Linux but everything worked perfectly in Windows. I still don't know what went wrong in Linux, but I'll have another look on it now when I have no dead line and send a bug report if applicable. The ps file was converted to PDF in Adobe Distiller (another Windows victory) with the settings of the printing house. The printing house had never heard about LaTeX and is heavily entrenched in Adobes software. Still they accepted my PDF right off and our cooperation was very smooth. I think that they were surprised and impressed when I told them that the book had been made in Linux with free software that doesn't cost a single krona (Swedish coin). The cover was made by a specialist in InDesign and thus not produced in Linux. I think it is hard to replace InDesign for this, since the printing house expects an open InDesign file for final adjustments. I have typeset several academic books in InDesign before, but I must say that the process is simpler and with fewer hurdles in LaTeX and especially in LyX, despite the fact that I am still learning the program. This was my second book project in LyX. Nowadays I do all my writing in LyX and only use LibO Writer when I have to submit papers in word processor format. My wishlist includes an Adobe Distiller type of program for Linux and that more printing houses would learn about LaTeX/LyX and offer support and advice.

I used LyX for the layout (and to write my own contribution of course). It was a major project with some 20 papers and the book has nearly 400 pages. I managed to get a postscript file once from Kubuntu, but then I tried again LyX refused. I have converted images to .eps and sometimes back to jpg when the log states that it stopped at those images and still no luck converting to postscript. In Windows I have done the conversion several times without any problems. I am beginning to suspect that it is a bug in the software handling the process or in how memory is handled by the different systems. The file is rather big with many big images so perhaps this is the problem. I must be content with the postscript file made in Windows and I don't think that I am able to solve the problem on Kubuntu. As I said it is very strange since I can convert other very similar big manuscripts that also contain a lot of jpg images.

Durign the latest try I just recieved an error message (in Swedish): Ett fel uppstod vid körning av: dvips -t a4 -o "Symposieskrift.ps" "Symposieskrift.dvi" (An error occurred during operation: dvips -t a4 -o "Symposieskrift.ps" "Symposieskrift.dvi") or something similar in English. There were no log popping up and thus nothing to check. I retrieved the log from View -> Messages and attach it. I can't see anything obviously wrong, but the most logical for me is that the last images in the log should be the problematic ones and shoudl thus be converted to eps? log Description: Binary data

Thank You for your suggestions! I don't think that the culprit is ImageMagick, since several very similar documents with lots of JPG:s compile to ps without any problem. I will test to reinstall ImageMagick however. I have removed parts of the documents and managed to get some child documents to compile by converting images to .eps. Now I am stuck on a part where I have changed the images to .eps, but LyX still refuses to compile to ps correctly. The resulting ps-file opens, but is faulty: pages and images are not showing and images are misplaced. I have noticed that, my pdf-reader, Okular, uses a lot of power while showing the ps-file and even seems to freeze. Perhaps there is something wrong here, but Okular works fine with all other documents and ps-files. The logs does not say much, just that there may be problems with some image (even images that transfers well). The logs are surprisingly clean for such faulty behvaiour. I see if I can catch something useful to post. Since the manuscript must be delivered real soon I think that I have to do the final work in Windows and postpone some of the bughunt until after the deadline. I believe this is very strange and I intend to find out where the fault is.
Problem compiling document to Postscript
I have a large book-sized document with several child documents. I use LyX 2.0.3 on Kubuntu 12.04. I need to compile the file to postscript for further conversion ahead of printing. The compilation stops with no meaningful error messages (at least for me). The log may indicate problems with images. I mostly use JPG. I have converted some images to eps after these messages, but the file wont compile anyway. Should I substitute all JPG images with eps? The strange thing is that the file compiles OK to postscript on Windows 7 (LyX 2.0.3). Other very similar documents compiles OK to postscript on Kubuntu. Other formats such as PDFLaTeX work OK. I don‘t know even how to begin look for a solution. Any suggestions are appreciated! Regards Påvel

I think I have understood that many LyX-users are scientists. I am a lowly scholar in the humanities, an archaeologist, and LyX is a suberb tool for writing and designing our kind of books too. The book is in Swedish with the title: ”Att aldrig vandra vill Johan Haquin Wallman Sveriges förste arkeolog”. Translated to English: ”Never to wander astray: Johan Haquin Wallman, Sweden’s first archaeologist”. It‘s a biography over an archaeologist from the early 19th century. It mostly contains images from my projects in .eps and .png formats. Is it safe to empty the cache subfolder? Is there a way to flush it from within LyX? I have tested the chapter* and addcontentsline solution, but it messes up
the automatic chapter and section numbering since I can't manage to
transfer the correct chapter/section number to the TOC for the headings
that need to be changed and the book is rather long (500 pages), and
manually number all headings is little too much work.
The Context menu > Insert short title solution seems to work very well for
my purposes. It is strange how easy solutions in LyX are when you discover
them!

Is it possible to distribute long headings on two lines in the text but on only one in the TOC?
Sorry for the enigmatic title, English is not my first language. What I am trying to do is to make some long headings evenly distributed over two lines in the text by using \\ in ERT. It works well with one exception: In the TOC the headings are cut in the same place as in the text. This looks rather ugly. I use a two column layout (Koma book) so there is less space for headings in the text than in the TOC and manually corrected headings looks much better than a heading automatically justified by LyX with just a single word on the second line. Is there a way to distribute headings on two lines in the text and on a single line in the TOC? Best Regards Påvel

I am typesetting conference proceedings with papers in several different
languages and the problem with sidecaptions was a stopper for me going to

useful addition.).

I'm not sure why but LyX 2 adds a bunch of lines to the preamble that
look like this one:
\addto\captionsbritish{\renewcommand{\SCfigurename}{Figure (side
caption)}}
In short, it's trying to redefine the macro \SCfigurename, but this
macro isn't defined in the first place. I fixed it by defining it in the
module, with the line
\let\SCfigurename\figurename

I came up with a similar, but perhaps not as good solution: activate the
captions package in the preamble and give an ERT command just before the
caption: \captionsetup{margin=xcm,xcm} where x is the distance from the
text margin, left and right. I have to experiment here too. The box
solution is perhaps better, since it combines image and caption.

it is possible to achieve some examples would be appreciated!
Put the image and caption inside a box. Specify a width for the box (you
will have to experiment to get it right). Leave the box in a float, of
course.
Justify captions in figure floats
Is it posible to justify the width of some captions in a book project to the width of the figure? The book has two columns. All figures are placed inside floats. Some figures are wide and span columns, but do not entirely fill the text width. With the standard settings captions fill the text width, even if the figure doesn’t. I think it would look better in these cases if the caption had the same width as the figure. I have looked on the Floatrow package but is seemed very complicated. I have had my fair share of printing disasters. I have done several book sized projects in InDesign and rather recently swithced to LyX. There are always things that go wrong in every project. All in all I am amazed over how good LyX is and I think I have found the software I have been looking for. I guess that a pdf scare now and then is a reasonable price. In one way it's good to hear that others have the same problem as I. Late last night while working on my book I thought I was going crazy. I have never seen so strange pdf:s. I also have an updated Ubuntu 10.10 installation. I guess this basically means that my LyX files are OK and I could continue work on the project. I also suppose that the final pdf output should be done in another program than Evince just to be on the safe side. Hello All! I hope I don’t ask too many questions... I have another problem with my references. I want text and references to look something like this in the output: As stated by Nicklasson (Nicklasson 2009 p. 23, Nicklasson 2010 p. 244). In LyX I have: As stated by Nicklasson (Nicklasson 2009, Nicklasson 2010 p. 244). It seems impossible to insert a page number for the first reference in the reference field. I have searched the LyX wiki and the documentation for Natbib, but not come up with a solution. Is it possible to do? I use Natbib, Author-Year setting and sweplanat as style. Hello and Thank you for your replies!
I have tested the solutions. I use a Swedish style, sweplnat, that
(generally) works well. When I try Günther's solution, Shött disappears
from the Bibliography. It may be that I am not enough familiar with LyX
and make some basic mistake.
I have looked into Wolfgang's solution, but I must do some checking up on
how to install/run Biblatex and Biber first.
I will do more tests and perhaps drop Zotero/LyZ and test JabRef. I also
think I must learn more LyX. It is truly a fantastic program, but is
sometimes a bit strange for a newcomer!

Indeed. You could try if there is a "swedish ..." style that solves
this for you, or you can help bibtex, e.g. with the suggestion from
btxdoc.pdf:
in the database (*.bib) file:
@PREAMBLE{ "\newcommand{\noopsort}[1]{} "
# "\newcommand{\singleletter}[1]{#1} " }
author = {{\noopsort{Harald Sch~tt}}Harald Sch{\"o}tt}

entries with special Swedish characters are sorted correctly

Sorry, there was an error in my first message. The incorrect entry is
the second one from the pdf-list, not the last!
I do not know whether the circumflex on the first character impacts the
sort order, but the absence of a comma suggests that BibTeX is reading
the author entry as a single name, rather than first name-last name. It
might help if you posted the Gillberg entry from the .bib file.

I had to enter extra { } around the Swedish Å, then the entry sorted OK.
I guess this is the kind of strange problems you encounter as newbie in
Lyx and Bibtex!
