I would check whether you use the same font set in Tools->Preferences->Screen
Fonts and the underlying fonts are installed on your system.
For specific math we use various fonts from here
https://www.lyx.org/trac/browser/lyxgit/lib/fonts , but they should be
installed if you use normal ways how to obtain lyx on your system.

LyX 2.4.1 just entered backports, so if you are on debian bookworm

Never used that, and their web is very vague. On first sight it seems that
1) their preffered engine seems to be XeTeX, not maintained anymore
2) they claim not to clutter working directory, you already have that
if you use lyx - in the sense that all temps are saved separately from
   .lyx files.
3) they claim to download latex packages on demand instead of full
texlive install. You can get that with MikTeX automatically or
(untested) you might get that with texlive via texliveonfly.

As such I do not see much of addon value for lyx.

I have provisional agreement with debian maintainer that 2.4 will be
sooner or later backported to bookworm. But we were not aggresive
about timing so if you are no in hurry it will land, but probably
after 2.4.1. But maybe I can push a little.

It's quite trivial to build lyx 2.4 locally in debian:
https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyXOnDebian#toc5

(essentially you need apt build-dep lyx to get compilation deps right).

If you strive for docbook/epub, your deps from bookworm won't be correct
though and you'll need couple more commands to get it right.

2.3.7 -> 2.3.8 should be seamless. 2.3.7 -> 2.4.0 might need some tinkering

The main reason why 2.3.8 was released is that it can read 2.4.x files as well.
If you don't need that and the fixes described in the announcement sound
irrelevant you can stay with 2.3.7.

Ok, it is now at: https://wiki.lyx.org/uploads/Examples/gnuplot.xtemplate/
you can link to the file from wiki via
uploads:/Examples/gnuplot.xtemplate/file...

We have some mention of .gp files in user guide of lyx 2.5:
https://www.lyx.org/trac/export/f3c5ff9cb72c5231f1e1e81452e67d6f12dadecb/lyxgit/lib/doc/UserGuide.lyx

You can edit the footnote about gnuplot (with lyx 2.4 if you have it) to
mention the
template in wiki page and its advantage - then send the update of the UG to me,
I'll commit it.

Ok, I see. I think it would be good to put this explanation in the
wiki.

Apart from that, I could upload your scripts into wiki upload section
if you want to just link them. And we could also mention in in our

I could even see something like that landing as part of lyx 2.5,

Hi all,

we tried to open our trac for registration again and got thousands of new
accounts during last weeks. Tonight those accounts started creating bug
reports which were essentially ads.

I banned the registration (again) and made big cleanup. trac interface

error-prone. I probably removed few real accounts. If you can't login,

We are done with the transition.

Basic summary:

- ftp server for wiki (not the ftp.lyx.org) is deceased.
For uploading material use wiki-uploads.git, all developers have rw access.
We need to do proxy for users, but I haven't seen this usage in past years,
so we are probably fine with that solution.

- svn server is deceased.
dictionary repo moved to dictionaries.git, all devs have rw access.
www-user repo moved to www-user.git, previous contributors have rw access.

- www.lyx.org should work very similarly as before.

- wiki.lyx.org - there will be more changes here. Many modules seen updates,
some modules do no exist anymore/no one updated for new PHP. I tried to fix
the most flagrant cases, but I'm sure some corners won't work.

- bug tracker (lyx.org/trac) - updated to the most recent version, some
UI changes, but it should feel familiar. Few plugins were not ported
to new python and do not work anymore - most notable keywords.
We allow users to register again, let's see how that goes.
Gmail often refuses traffic from trac, JMarc has ambition to spin full
fledged mailing service with bells and whistles demanded by google
  at some moment.

I'll update relevant descriptions on our web/wiki to reflect the changes
in the coming days + smaller polishing left out.
If something does not work, please report back, we may or may not fix it ;)

This was a long ride, thanks JMarc for beating the trac dragon :)

Maybe you are mixing qt4 and qt5?

I would play with the following configure switches:

--disable-qt5

and perhaps

--with-qt-dir
--with-qt-includes
--with-qt-libraries

And you better purge all generated moc_* files in the tree between

Scheduled maintenance of LyX servers (Mar 21, 2024)

2024-03-20 Thread Pavel Sanda
Dear LyXers,

we plan to do the major transition of our web infrastructure soon.
Web and wiki were already moved to read-only mode, bug tracker (trac) will be
probably inaccesible altogether, probably from Thu morning (all times in CET).
The main switch is planned on Thu evening hours. The optimistic scenario
is that we will finish by midnight.

Git and mailling services should remain intact, you can keep the business
as usual there.

We tried to prepare things ahead, but it's impossible to know all the
collateral damage until we pull the trigger. So expect evening outage
and I would ask you to avoid unecessery interaction with the services
from Thursday (commenting bugs, changing wiki etc) until I send further
announcement. Things could be probably more smooth, but time is
currently scarce resource both for me and JMarc.

Fingers crossed :)

Dear all, who knocked on our doors with donations, which we could not process.
As TUG accepted to collected donations on our behalf we changed the link on the
LyX donation
page. I hope it will work now. Thanks for TUG's help and sorry for taking
(literally)
years to act...

I can't be of much help here. Just FYI we are in the middle of slow
transition to a new git server, so you update process might need
some tinkering in near future (we'll announce here and on

Speed should be matter of initial clone only. Once you have it locally,
fetching updates are reasonably small even for connection speeds like 10kb/s...

What we could perhaps do on our part is to clone master branch, compress
it into single file and put on the http://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/
with short readme explaining the situation.
We have currently two chinese mirrors, so there is a good chance for you to get
the initial clone very fast and then continue by fetching from original source
(US, Oregon).

@Riki: we used to have something like this on the ftp in the svn-git times.
ATM it should be enough just to do clean clone, take only .git directory,
tar.xz(*) it, create signature and upload to ftp.
I can create some explanation on our web...

Pavel

(*) And zip? Dunno whether zipped clone on linux will work in windows
environment. Alternatively we could ask Euegen for windows based
clone.

Maybe this is different bug though. For me the dock widgets are freezing
anytime I try to move them from the docked position.
I reported this in 2018 and I just reviewed the report. So I must correct
myself now, there is claim that they fixed that in 2022 for Qt 6.3, but
without backport to Qt 5. Will see in the future :)

Detaching/Attaching panes in Qt is pain, does not matter if you are at wayland

When I try to compile it I see errors complaining that I do not have 'biber'.
Do you have it installed?

Also, when I change the document class to e.g. book, the bibliography works

Maybe it's possible even now with command-sequence lfun?

I could reproduce the problem with Inkscape. I can actually open the file in
Inkscape and it looks fine (though there are Warning on the console about svg
content).
It's the export when it breaks completely. I suggest to file bug against
inkscape itself.

For LyX purposes you could bypass this problem by using rsvg-convert instead of
inkscape (works fine here).
Another way could by to try luck in different vector editor, resave it and try
again.

Dear all,

this is one of my last items on the TODO list for the 2.4 release.

Bunch of people expressed their opinion that our default for paste operation
should preserve newlines. I do not have strong opinion but agree that in my
experience I have to go to Paste Special sub menu quite often to preserve
the newlines.

Before looking what would need change, is there reasonable unanimous agreement
that this should be the default or are there folks who prefer current behaviour
which joins the lines by default?

Herbert,

I plan to add -dALLOWPSTRANSPARENCY as a default for ps2pdf in LyX 2.4.

Is the option -dNoSafer really needed now? My shallow understanding is
that it was needed only initially for pre 9.53.3 versions of ghostscript
and since then -dALLOWPSTRANSPARENCY should work.

Navigate back was implemented so it reminds `` in vim. It does not work well
though and I was thinking several times to transform it to vim's g; indeed,

Indeed it looks your screen is too small to show the whole dialog.
It will be even worse with 2.4 and we should perhaps do something about it.

Anyway for the moment, even though you don't see the buttons you should
still be able to use them via accelerators, i.e. for OK button you need
to press Alt+O.

Does it help with saving your preferences?

Autocompleter uses as dictionary only words which are already written
in your document (or other opened files).

Yes I do that regularly. Note however, that LyX support is only very basic

Indeed I see your problem and we need to either update the code or guidelines.
Essentially the problem is that "git init" is not enough for LyX to recognize
that the directory is under git control.
Once the first file is added via "git add" the recognition (of not just the file
but the whole dir) works and register command will proceed.
I'll try to look on that once I have some free time.
At the moment your workaround is to start new git repo via init + add file
on the commandline (or via some git frontend).

Note that you might want to install LyX only locally to your user
directory and not to mess up with your base system in /usr (because
this might backfire later if you want to upgrade your distro).

You can do that by adding --prefix in configure (e.g. something like
--prefix=/home/user/lyx/ where user is your login; the installed files
together with executable will be find in ~/lyx/).

Not easy for the whole document. But if you are coder I can see that within
couple hours you might come up with a script which does something along these
lines:
1) copy paragraph which is selected in lyx into text file
2) seend it to DeepL API via curl
3) receive the response
4) paste it back into document

Special formatting, equations/ images etc will be gone in this transformation.

But having in LyX some better handling of such exchange for external services
would be useful. From time to time I am checking grammarly for evolution of
their
API interface, which would be closer to C++/Qt world so we could directly use
it...

No, this is misunderstanding.
You use Acknowledgments in the traditional sense as unnumbered section at the
end of the paper.
What I'm talking about is that we currently also offer numbered "theorem-style"
acknowledgments,
i.e. you could have it multiplte times as many subsections in the paper.

I don't think anyone uses it and we based it on amsthm package manual section
4.2, which
even AMS folks regard as a mistake.

Both are correct.

So neither on the server nor on the way to your computer anything changed.

Remaining are two options:
1) False positive from VirusTotal.
2) Developer's machine creating the windows installer got infected so
the binary is infected from the very begining.

Given that we get regularly get various false positives I tend to think
this is again the case for 1. However if you are still concerned you can

We do not provide debian packages. If you really strive for 2.4 you will have to
compile for yourself from the tarball (lyx-2.4.0-beta2.tar.xz).

Note that this is preview release and once you edit in 2.4 you won't be able to

One way how to select the theme you want is to use commandline parameter
-style, e.g:

The problem might be that ubuntu installs only limited set of styles
(I see only Fusion and Windows styles on Debian).

(and if you download 2.3.6 tarball the build script still work on your system,
right?)

Ok. Do you know what Qt version was used on your system for previous 2.3.6?

Are you always starting with clean compilation tree?
(once moc_* files are generated with wrong Qt version, new configure switch
won't help)

You could use scripting, e.g. if you are on linux:
$ LAYOUT=`lyxclient -c LYXCMD:server-get-layout|sed s/INFO:server-get-layout://`

Then manipulate the result in LAYOUT variable and pass it back again via
lyxclient.

We actually have more detailed page here https://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/ListNetiquette

This is strange because the binding works for me (005c version).

We have it at https://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/MinimalExample , but can link it from
list netiquette statements at https://www.lyx.org/MailingLists#toc8 .

Could you create such explaining page at our wiki so beginners get it?
We could add the netiquette links to initial subscribe-list emails.

Agreed. The fact that other lyx users are happy to respond to tikz question
already shows it within reasonable perimeter of possible topics.
If one does not like tikz question there is nothing easier than to
ignore it and move to the next thread.

> (Unlike, say, that bottom posting is preferable.)

Good point, it maybe worth of repeating once in a while that our list
netiquette nicely asks for
a) bottom posting and
b) not quoting irrelevant parts of the messages in the reply.

Advantages of both points become very clear once there is some need
to discuss some issue at depth. Alas, even some developers are lazy
to respect others time and ignore it ;)

What our netiquette indeed does not cover is kindness and I find
it impossible to impose it from outside. What can we do as a
community is to decide that we might not want to scare user
newbies -- if you the only thing you have to say is RTFM, just
leave the thread and move to another one.

I must confess though that in cases where someone is repeatedly
outsourcing his effort to *at least try* to find some solution on
his own, the RTFM might be approprite input... In my view of course,
but if there is some community sense that we should try to declare
some positive approach in the netiquette, we are free to discuss it
on this list and set our boundaries :)

All related material for export including figures is first copied into
temporary directory and only after that the export to e.g. pdf is done.
Often you need to do some specific conversions (e.g. figure in .eps -> figure
in .pdf) or final pdf assembly. Similarly with bibliography etc.

If you do all this intermediate stuff in your original directory with
.lyx/figures there will be lot of messy and orphaned files around.

One can approach this on different levels:
1) systems-wise via xmodmap (if you are on linux)
2) lyx-wise via keyboard maps in prefs (no guarantee how much maps still work)
2) lyx-wise via keybinding esc to "unicode-insert 005c"

It might be better idea to bind to different key than getting rid of escape
though :)

Does Nuance Dragon Dictate allows outputing the sequence of characters?
If yes you probably don't need to invent binding catalogoue for LyX at all.

E.g. if you are in math mode (ctrl+m) you don't need keybinding for \varOmega,
you just need to type "\varOmega"+space and its done.

Alternatively you can avoid math mode and write in pure LaTeX in ERT
(via ctrl+l) as others suggested.

In both case there seems nothing to be done on LyX part.

Good luck,

Bug tracker accounts

2022-07-13 Thread Pavel Sanda
Dear LyXers,

we recently suffer massive spam abuse in our bug tracker. For the moment
we disabled automatized account creation and removed approx. 30k fake user
accounts.

While we tried to avoid removal of legit accounts (by pairing to existing
bug reports) some of this work was manual and could possibly lead to
inadvertent removal of real user (sorry!).

If new account needs to be (re)created, please send the request to mailling
list and we'll do it for you until new solution is found (captcha/migration
to different platform).

Sorry for the inconveniece,

Not sure what you mean by "scratch", but generally you create title
by using environment Title (left top combobox in the toolbar).

Completion "In Text" works only in normal written text, not within
direct latex command you insert via Insert -> TeX Code.
