No - I do not have compiz installed (or is there another way?).

If there is a specific setting to check, please let me know where to

Thanks a lot for these tips! I was looking for such tools.

This time I have already invested in a AGP graphics card
for my system and it paid off. The lag is gone and I can use LyX 1.6
very smoothly again.

FYI, I purchased a geforce 6200 card PNY VERTO GF 6200 AGP 256MB retail
(G606200A8D24LPB).

The card was easy to install - even on in a narrow AGP slot - and in
Ubuntu 8.10 the nvidia proprietary driver got automatically pushed into
the system.

So, everything works fine now and thanks for sharing your comments.

I now tried to use it with the 1.6.0 package provided at:
http://www.getdeb.net/app/LyX

Still no change. So do I have to face the fact that my computer system
is 4 years old and never was speedy graphic-wise?

Thus, there might be only 2 options:

1. Go back to 1.5.6 (How to convert files from 1.6?) or try out 1.5.7
(No deb package available yet, have to check if the speed is ok there).

2. Upgrade my system: Maybe an AGP card such as Geoforce 6200 would
work in my system.

The question remains, what changed in 1.6 in terms
of new library usage that might have caused this increase in resource
requirement?

Well, I am on Linux so I am not sure if Mac uses the same shell
commands:

The standard Ubuntu package is in /usr/bin/lyx - I compiled
mine to /usr/local/bin/lyx. In Linux you can check with the command
"which lyx" in a terminal window.

Thanks for the comments.

I compiled it myself using libqt4-dev (Version: 4.4.3-0ubuntu1).

The commands I issued:

1. ./autogen.sh
2. ./configure
3. make
4. sudo make install

I am not sure if this stdlib-debug option is set automatically.

Is there a method to check (I have already deleted the compilation
directory)?

Yes - with 1.5.6 on the same system everything is very fast.

Another item what I have just realized, when typing fast on in
maximized window:

* With 1.5.6 the CPU usage of the lyx process is around 10-12% and the
CPU ussage of the X process is around 10-14%

* With 1.6.0 the CPU usage of the lyx process is around 1-2% and the
CPU ussage of the X process is very fast going up to 100%

Thanks for your comments. Here are further system details:

Xubuntu 8.10 with xserver-common version: 2:1.5.2-2ubuntu3
Usually, I use XFCE4 version: 4.4.2.1, I tried it now also with openbox
after Richard Hecks's tip. It was a little bit faster though, but still
not usable.

Graphics card is coming with the mainboard 865G chipset (integrated
graphic).

The problem is only happening for LyX 1.6.0. LyX 1.5.6 works as
expected on the same system.

FYI, I filed a bug report:
http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5582
A similar faulty situation seems to occur at
http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5524

Anything else to check? Thanks for helping me narrow down this problem.

Unfortunately, this actually did not solve it.

I have found another behaviour that might be relevant for experts to
solve this:

* Large window size of lyx (e.g., full screen or maximized)
-> LyX is slow

* Make the window minimal (only show a few lines and columns) -> LyX is
 fast

Thus, could it be that the library is overpowering my computer
(Intel 2.80 GHZ / 1024 RAM)?

I solved it, however, without knowing what was the original cause.

Here is what I did:

1. removed the lyx ubuntu package 1.5.6 from my system (wajig remove
lyx)

2. installed the same package again (wajig install lyx) - I did want to
test with the old version to see if the slowness also occurs there.

3. I started lyx 1.5.6 everything worked fine & the positive suprise
was, when I started lyx 1.6.0 the so much appreciated responsiveness of
lyx is back.

So maybe when compiling the source code some different
versions of libraries get installed then with the standard Ubuntu
package?

seacyd

Thanks for your comments.

In a development version of 1.6 I realized this problem and thus I
usually do not show the source code (view source unchecked). The
"complete source" item therin was also switched off. Automatic update
was switched on, switching it off does not change the situation,
however. The document is short, it has only 8 pages.

Any further ideas?

Thanks for your comments.

No - in Tools/Preferences/Look & Feel / Graphics is checked but the
item "Instant Preview" is off.

I un-checked also all items in this section such as "Enable tool tips
in main work area" and even tried to un-check all Session items as
well.

Still slow.

Fast typing - LyX follows slowly only

2008-11-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello,

For a long time I valued LyX for its swiftness when typing.
Something changed recently, however and I do not
have an idea what is causing this.

When I type the letters only show up slowly on the screen. This makes
working with LyX really cumbersome.

I assumed this could have something to do with "Auto Completion". But
nothing changed when I switched this feature of.

Version: LyX 1.6.0 (7 November 2008) - compiled binary on Ubuntu 8.10

Any ideas?

latest MikTex beraks my Lyx documents of the letter (g-brief, German) class (latex error)

2008-07-18 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I just tried to write a letter with Lyx. For this I always use the
letter (g-brief, German) class. When I hit the button for PDF (or DVI,
it doesn't matter) export, I get the following latex errors:

"""
1. Undefined control sequence.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

2. LaTeX Error: Missing \begin{document}.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

You're in trouble here. Try typingto proceed.
If that doesn't work, type X to quit.

3. Undefined control sequence.

"""

I also tried documents of the same class that worked before, I get the
same errors. As I have recently updated MikTex, I blame this update to
cause the problem, but I have no idea what to do. I checked the document
language setting in Lyx, but this is set to german, so I don't know why
the error mentions english. I also exported to .tex and saw that
\begin{document} was there.

My System: Windows Vista with Lyx 1.5.5 and an up-to-date MikTex
installation.

Please let me know if further information is needed.

Thanks a lot for the help

2. I also know that .bib files have a certain format, and that I can get

How do I actually save a file in a *.bib* format???

You can write out the .bib file by hand using a text editor. However, it
is usually preferable to use a bibtex editor such as JabRef. Gui bibtex
editors are available for most operating systems.

Table of contents - breakline

2008-01-31 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hallo !!

I've got some long titles and some long figure captions..

When making toc and table of figures, them flow over the page border.

I know that exist short titles for this, but I would like to preserv titles and
captions in the form they are (quite impossible to shorten them).

Is it possible to break lines in indeces? How to do it ?

.There is something else about this I should have pointed out. When you
.use LyX dialogs to insert an image (second case), LyX also automatically
.adds \usepackage{graphicx} to the preamble. When you use ERT (first
.case), it does not. If, in the first case, you also had at least one
.image in the document inserted via LyX dialog, this is not the
.explanation; but if e-snake.eps was the only image, or if all images

Solution: Header problem ! .. and .. Bug?

2007-12-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks to M-L and Paul A. Rubin for their precious and fast helps.

I didn't know about LaTeX Log And i guessthat's really usefull.. this time
worke dto drive me to the right solution.

In the end it was just a directory problem, which probably is a bug too..

I solved it removing spaces for m directories. I mean: My LyX file was in
../Document 1/document.lyx and I soved moving it to
./Document_1/document.lyx.

So, if it is not already solved in 1.5.3, i suggest everyone to avoid spaces in
directories ...

The strange thing is that it was able to recognise the file did exist (so no
error messages were reported, but i t wasn't able to find it when having to
integrate it in the document.

Even srtanger is that the problem did occurr just in this case :

\fancyhead[C]{\resizebox*{!}{10mm}{\includegraphics{/Immagini/e-snake.eps}}}

but in this case

\includegraphics[width=1\columnwidth]{Immagini/e-snake.eps}

it did not have any problem.

The first was filled manually in an ERT box, the second is the source behind
normal LyX graphic insertion..

In lyx for win it did work properly, showing that little image in the cen=

In Lyx for win it doesn't work! it does show the header but no images in =

I really don't know which one could be the problem, so no idea where to l=

Could it be 'couse of miktex is able to render this code and don't-know-w=

Fonts look issue

2007-03-26 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi, I would like to obtain pdf files with exactly the same fonts look of this
pdf:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~alanb/scshort.pdf
(from http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~alanb/ )
After some searching I discovered that this pdf uses the cm* series of fonts,
which should be the computer modern serie.
For example the cmti10 (computer modern text italics size 10) is "embedded
subset". This is the same for every other cm* font embedded (see file, document
properties, fonts in acrobat reader).
I don't really know how to proceed. I experimented with various combinations in
document, settings, fonts but was unable to replicate the look. Selecting
computer modern didn't solve the issue. If I look with acrobat reader to my
document I discover that F15, F45, and other F* are embedded too. And also the
Helvetica font. I'm using lyx 1.5.0 beta for windows.
Thank you a lot in advance for any help.

LyX 1.4.3, pdflatex and EPS in OS X

I just tried the last version of LyX compiled for OS X and detected some
problems:

- pdflatex is not working (it was working with the last version).
- I cannot not see eps figures in LyX, event though they appear after DVI
in the generated pdf. This is something I also
detected in 1.4.2 but that worked right for me in 1.4.0 preview (I haven't
changed my latex install).

LyX Errors: what can be the problem? & Text Cross-references?

2004-06-29 Thread Luyt Du Chavoux, Mnr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Hi
I'm pretty new to Linux (Knoppix3.3 -> Debian testing/unstable) and LyX. I liked what
I saw about LyX and want to write my thesis in it if I can. However, When I try to
export my LyX file to pdf I get 4 latex errors all in this one place. What could be
the problem? This "paragraph" is of type "Description" (It is the closest I could find
to what I need below a figure). The two formulae is in math mode (with the little blue
box around them)
Fig.2 The relation between animal gain and stocking rate (Jones & Sandland 1974).
Using different stocking densities they determined experimentally that the gain in
mass per animal (Average Daily Gain) drops linearly with an increase in stocking
density having a relationship of the form: Y = a - bx (Y is ADG per animal, x is
stocking density and a and b are parameters determined experimentally). The production
per hectare on the other hand, is a relationship of the form: Y = ax - bx^{2} with
the same parameters as above. In this example, up to about 1 animal per hectare there
is no change in productivity per animal, usually ascribed to too much low-quality
vegetative material (Morris et al. 1999) or maximum gain physiologically possible
(Jones and Sandland 1974). Then, when the "critical stocking rate" is reached, there
is a linear drop in production per animal. Assuming no change in the vegetation, the
economic carrying capacity (max production per hectare) is reached at a stocking
density of about 2.6 animals per hectare and if reproduction equals mortality (K) at
the point where animals only just maintain their own body mass, ecological carrying
capacity is reached at a stocking density of about 4.8 animals per hectare.
The four errors (I don't think they are exactly in the right places, but all are in
this paragraph) are the following:
1.
Missing $ inserted.
...s a relationship of the form:Y = ax - bx^
 {2}
I've inserted a begin-math/end-math symbol since I think
you left one out. Proceed, with fingers crossed.

2.
Missing $ inserted.
\end{description}
I've inserted something that you may have forgotten.
(See the above.)
With luck, this will get me unwedged. But if you
really didn't forget anything, try typing `2' now; then
my insertion and my current dilemma will both disappear.

3.
LaTeX Error: Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item.
\end{description}
Try typingto proceed.
If that doesn't work, type X to quit.

4.
LaTeX Error: Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item.
\end{description}
Try typingto proceed.
If that doesn't work, type X to quit.

Is there a quick way in LyX to turn the view of the document from LyX (just formated
text) to LaTeX so that I can change the raw LaTeX? Should I do this at all (or is
there another way to solve this problem)?

Another question: Is it possible to use cross-references where the Label (that is
referenced) uses the first few words of the following text instead of a number and the
cross-reference then display these words (when I try this, it just displays an empty
space in the PDF!)? I want to use this for my reference list. I decided not to use
BibTex (or rather Pybliography) because I already have my references in a Paradox
database (in a Delphi program) together with keywords and my own notes that can be
used for searching... it looks as if it will take too much time to get the whole
database into Pybliographic (and I don't know how much of a searching capability
Pybliogrphic has). It is easier for me to just copy and paste when I need a new
reference in my paper.

Thanks
Chavoux Luyt

chapterbib example fails also: Re: Including bibliographies ....

2003-02-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

Thanks for suggestion, but it did not work.
I am using Lyx 1.2.0 on two machines ... Wintel and Linux.
On neither machine does the procedure of multi-part document files
produce the correct bibliographic entries.

Case 1: If each chapter is compiled separately, then the bib entries
are numbered according to their sort order in the chapter bibliographic list
When the parent document is re-compiled (using dvi-view), then there is a
bibliography at the end of each chapter but there is NOT one at the end of
the complete document unless there is an explicit inclusion of a bib
list reference.
(This does NOT come with the chapterbib example from Herbert's site)
Once the bib list is included, yes I get now bib lists at end of each
chapter
and at end of book. BUT the reference numbers from the chapters do NOT
refer to the entries at the back of the book but to the sort order for
the chapters,
that is, in different chapters the reference [1] will refer to different
documents,
and they will NOT match the reference [1] at the end.

Case 2: If I try to simply add a bib list at end of main document and delete
them from chapters, then I get nothing in the main bib list.

It seems to me the example provided in Tips'n Tricks is no longer
applicable,
at least to LyX 1.2.0. And that the process for including bib files in
multi-part
documents does not work very well.

I tried removing temporary .tex files, I have disabled the /tmp
directory and
so on ... nothing seems to help.

How should this work?

Goffredo

sometimes LyX/LaTeX (I don't know) did not recompile the new editing

Including bibliographies ....

2003-02-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi All,

I know this has been answered previously, but I can't seem to find the
reference,
and the tips and tricks discussion of it doesn't seem to work in my case.

My problem is this ... I have one main document which has a number of
chapters. Each chapter contains bibliographic references (bibtex
references),
and the main document also contains a bibliographic environment at the
end. Now I want the bibliographic data to print only at the end in the main
document, once all the chapters are collated, and I don't want
bibliographic
matter at the end of each chapter. How can I do this?

I have tried doing a dvi on the main document, and then on each chapter,
and then removing the bib references in the chapters, but nothing seems
to help in getting the bib references at the end of the main document. This
seems to be very ricky to get right, and I don't know how. (As I said the
instructions in Herbert's page does not work for me ... )

Thanks for help

Re: Problems with Meta_L in Danish keyboard (Windows)

2002-12-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi Christina,

yup I had this problem too ... I think ... until I noticed I had two Alt
keys on the keyboard, one on the left and
one on the right. My Meta key was mapped to the Alt on the right, not on
the left! This caused me some
frustration until I worked it out (btw this is on W2k and W98 (laptop)
boxes).

I hope this is your problem too.

Hi,

just FYI. I noticed Treepad will soon be available for Linux platform.
It exports trees/articles in XML form, so it should be very easy to write

RH 7.3 Circular Install Troubles ....

2002-11-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi All,

I upgraded my Linux to RH7.3 and desired to upgrade my LyX too (of course :))
I obtained two rpm's ... one for xforms and one for lyx ... but then ended
up with a vicious circle when trying to install them LyX required
xforms as a dependency, and when I tried to load xforms, xforms required
LyX as a dependency. So ... effectively I can't use rpm to install either
one ... The README file from the download site didn't help much ...
Solutions as always will be much appreciated.

newbie question

2002-10-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings.

I'm a new lyx user, and have just finished the very helpful tutorial
at http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/lyx/index.htm.

I'm writing a course, and am trying to duplicate the course layout of
microsoft technical courses (it's a unix related course so naturally I'm
refusing to use microsoft authoring products).

The course needs the following formatting:

shaded boxes (a la fancybox package)
graphics in shaded boxes (any graphics format that will work)
horizontal lines ( ERT \rule )

My questions are:

Should I look at creating a LaTeX document class for this, or can
these needs be met within lyx layout and using ERT ?

Also, is there a way of having a macro to stuff in repetitive ERT
as needed?

Thanks in advance, and forgive me if these questions are overly dumb.

2002-07-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My brother asked me to design a web page for his band Tainted Emotions. At
first, his site was nothing more than a few paragraphs describing his
unique psychotic
melodies. Although a good start, mere words failed to convey the complete
Tainted Emotions experience. For that, I needed graphics. Not just any
graphics though.
Fast, sleek, and professional images that only my brother's band deserves.

I found all the free public domain photos I needed at freewebgrafix.com.
They had everything an aspiring graphics designer needs to transform a
texty site into a
graphic sensation. Animated GIFs, backgrounds, banners, and of
course--photos.

Yep, I had figures sized to a certain percentage of the page in 1.1.6 and
that was interpreted as a % of the distance from left to right margin. In
1.2.0 that's interpreted as a % of the page size, so the images are larger.
For example, I put two images side by side in the same float and sized them
to 48% of the page. In 1.2.0 they do not fit side by side and one is
stacked on top of the other.

What does it do? I could try it on my document if that helps...

How to place a frame (visible on the screen) around a displayed equation with a label

2002-02-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I would like to place a frame (visible on the screen) around an equation which is
displayed (not inline). I have tried a table with one cell and it works fine but there
is one big problem : I can't insert a label for that equation (the label command is
inactive then) !

Is there another solution than \boxed{} (which do not display the frame on the screen)
?

Thanks.

Hi lyxers,

I noticed that path to picture stored within a lyx doc is relative to

Storing the complete path to picture could solve the issue, i guess.
Are there different solutions?

framed paragraph

i would like to frame a paragraph, ie longer than a few words.
fbox{} is not good enough, as it does not works for more thatb one line.

the fancybox package, inlcuded in tetex helps a lot, but most of the
commands
need somrthing like

fbox {
\begin{Benumerate}
...
\end{Benumerate}
}

the customisation guide helps me understands that i can create a laout
the
fbox (with Latextype commnand), or \begin...\end (with Latextype
Environment)

, but i dont know how to do it it both at the same type, ie a layout
that would emit fbox { \begin{Benumerate} athe begining, and
\end{Benumerate}
} at the end?

do i have to create a latex package for this ? (im complete novice in
that)
