Charactersstickingtooneanother (Memoire class)
Dear all: I'm using Book Memoire class to set books, using Palatino or Times Roman. A peculiar problem: when I set a word in italics, it tends tosticktothenextword, unless I manually place an inter-word space between both. This can be quite time-consuming. Converting doc to Lyx
Dear all: As we work in Lyx to create our alternative books here in Goa, India, we often run into the headache of having to convert entire doc files into Lyx. This is a time-consuming and fraught-with-errors process, and a line-by-line manual method. Recently, thanks to the very efficient Lyx-Users list [lyx-us...@lists.lyx.org] list, I learnt of some ways through which to convert doc files into Lyx. The formatting often works, and with a quick clean-up, it's possible to preserve formatting and import it straight into Lyx. This really saves a lot of time, energy and trouble. Let me share it with you here, while thanking Stefano for helping me convert some of my files! Jim Oldfield : One way would be to open the file in Word and from there save it as an HTML file. Then in LyX import that HTML file. I doubt the results would be very good, but they would probably at least preserve the italics. stefano franchi : The conversion is never pretty, I am afraid. I usually follow this path: 1. in word (or equivalent) save from doc to rtf 2. convert rtf to latex with rtftolatex2e (in Linux and, I think, MacOs X. I do not know if a version for windows exists) 3. clean up the tex file in a text editor (in particular, remove all the \tab commands, take a close look at the font commads) 4. import the latex file into lyx Notice that most of the formatting is done via ad hoc latex command (i.e. changing the fonts, inserting spaces, etc), instead of using the proper Latex commands (i.e. title, chapter, emphasis, etc). That is how the rtf-to-latex converter works. If you want a "proper" Lyx file, you would have to clean up the file, by removing all the formatting instruction in ERT boxes (i.e. the boxes with \tab et similia), and by fixing the formatting with lyx formatting commands. For instance, the paragraph spacing should be uniform, etc. But the lyx file should get you going. Dr Eberhard W Lisse : I have had to do this a bit recently and find that the easiest way is to open the file in OpenOffice, and export it to LaTeX (you need an extension, google for it) using the ultra-clean option. Then I use TeXShop to get rid of some unnecessary stuff and change the header to what I like in LyX and then run tex2lyx. Works very nicely. It may work for you. I am a long-time (2-3 years) Lyx users, but just only recently ran into the NAVIGATE > OTHER LISTS feature on this software, after upgrading to 1.6.1 Just to say: I cannot tell you how useful this is, for updating the index, correcting footnotes and whole lot of other tasks. Kudos to the developers for creating such a useful feature. Other features on one's dream-list: * A kind of automated indexing: which lists all the occurances of one word, and asks the editor whether s/he wants to include each entry. * Better help files. * More and better latex chapter-page templates, which offer neat layouts... * Closer integration between layout on Lyx and typesetting (on wordprocessor), so that when one file gets changed, the other gets automatically updated. * Easier installs on Windows, to help editors to work with authors seamlessly. Linking Lyx text to external file
Is there some way I could link a Lyx text to an external file (say, in Jstar or any Linux wordprocessor) so that when I make changes in the file the Lyx text gets automatically updated? Or am I asking for too much :-) FN -- FN * http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com M +91-9822122436 P +91-832-2409490 http://twitter.com/fn On Facebook: http://www.new.facebook.com/people/Frederick-Noronha/502514643
Typesetting verse
What's the best way to typeset a poem or two? And how does one attain the spacing needed between lines? Thanks so much, FN -- FN * http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com M +91-9822122436 P +91-832-2409490 http://twitter.com/fn
TOC not picking up chapter names
I'm working ona book (document class: book), but suddenly my Chapter* titles won't show up in the table of contents. It works fine if I switch to Chapter (with the chapter numbers). But that's not what I want. Could I correct this somehow? Thanks, FN -- FN * http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com M +91-9822122436 P +91-832-2409490 http://twitter.com/fn
Book (AMS), quote* getting indented
Hi all: I'm trying to use Book (AMS) class, and in it, the quote* text seems to be getting indented at the start of every new para. Actually I don't want the indent, because I've not implemented it throughout in the book. Question: how do I achieve this? Many thanks! Chapter styles...
My friend Derek sent me this note about how to introduce interesting chapter-styles in a page. Just thought of sharing it with you, and thank the guys (from France?) who put this together! Change tracking ... in Lyx
What's the way to track changes made in a Lyx document? I know there's a patch for earlier versions http://wiki.lyx.org/Tips/ChangeTrackingLyx1-3-2 but is there something now for 1.6.1? Thanks, FN -- FN * Independent Journalist http://fn.goa-india.org M: +91-9822122436 P: +91-832-2409490
1.6.1
Just shifted to Lyx 1.6.1 today and it's very nice! I particularly liked its superior NAVIGATE functions, that allows you to reach to specific footnotes, etc. Thanks guys and ladies, who worked on it! Photos for offset printing
Sorry to raise what might be an off-topic query here. Is there any tutorial (Lyx- or Free Software-connected) tutorial on how to prepare your photos for offset printing? Many thanks. FN -- FN * Independent Journalist http://fn.goa-india.org M: +91-9822122436 P: +91-832-2409490
Halftones
Sorry about not phrasing my question adequately, but this is what I meant to say earlier: To print in offset, my B&W photos need to be in halftones, if I am to output it properly on a Lyx file, made into PDF. Please could you tell me how to convert my images into halftones? What is the best format for photos to be used in Lyx (EPS, JPG, TIFF)? What should be the resolution for B&W printing? Is there any primer on how to prepare a Lyx file for offset B&W printing? Many thanks! Query on printing with 'screens'
Hi all: I'm a Lyx user in Goa, and hope you won't mind me intruding. Every time I go in for a book, to be printed via offset, my printer has a problem. He takes the PDF file and attempts to do crazy things like importing it into Windows/Corel Draw, etc. He says the photos won't print because they don't have a screen. Query: * Is he right? * Is there some way of putting a screen on the photos? LyX takes TeX commands, so maybe if there's one I could use it. Earlier, he was struggling to find how to print the file laterally inverted (mirror image), and we found the command after some search. Book (AMS) default type
Please could someone tell me what is the default type used for Book (AMS)? I would like to include this in the publishing info of the book, but can't seem to find the name of the type. If I've hiked the default type (base) to 11, what would be the resultant linespace? Thanks! Watermark across a book?
Is it possible to use Lyx to create a 'watermark' across all the pages of a book -- say, something in grey to read 'Unedited Rough Draft'? I've seen this on another draft copy of a book (not done in Lyx) and was wondering if similar capabilities existed here. Just need to use this while submitting books, which should not be taken as the final version. Thanks!
