It would be also nice if anyone running recent-enough Android could test
whether "Debian noroot" app allows flawless install of LyX (basically
run "apt-get install lyx" as a root from its terminal).

Last time I tried similar thing with UserLand on older Android tablet
the app permission were not enough to finish full install.

The same here. My memory span what "Bookmark 2" means is in minuttes/hours max.
Usability might improve with the new visibility feature, but I do not think
it will turn me into heavy bookmark user.
I do not have strong pref for anchor position.

I use more often Navigate back, to quickly jump around. This feature was
designed to be similar to `` in vim.

I admit it might be confusing for users who expect something like back
button in web browsers, where each hit would bring you more and more
backwards in time. Such version of what "back" means would be fine
with me as well but would need more coding.

Interesting, I thought it was a nice feature how to go quickly back to last
editing point when no document is opened. But I see it might be confusing
once new document is opened and no editing happened yet.

This is not exactly what I observe:
Scenario 1:
1. open via (clicking on) file, set CT toolbar on.
2. close window (but not instance)
3. open via the same file
4. toolbar is lost

Scenario 2:
1. open via (clicking on) file, set CT toolbar on.
2. close window (but not instance)
3. open via the another file
4. toolbar is lost

Scenario 3:
1. open via (clicking on) file, set CT toolbar on.
2. quit the whole lyx instance
3. open via the same file
4. toolbar is remembered

Scenario 4:
1. open via (clicking on) file, set CT toolbar on.
2. quit the whole lyx instance
3. open via the another file
4. toolbar is remembered

So at least here (lyx 2.3.4.2 & big sur 11.2.1), its not the file identity,
but the fact whether you just close window or the whole app which matters.

Given that Stephan can not reproduce the best workaround is perhaps
permananetly change the ui file (see Eberhard's mail).

Actually I can. When I look into ~/Library/Preferences I see possible culprit --
there are two plist files: org.lyx.LyX-2.3.plist and second org.lyx.lyx.plist.

It seems that one of them is used when lyx is launched from icon and the second
when you click on some .lyx file.

Robert, if you click on some .lyx file and set VC Toolbar , then quit and again
click on .lyx file then the setting persists. Correct?

I see, then this is bug specific to mac only.
There must be something different when lyx is launched via its icon and
when clicking just on the file.

I do not experience your problem. The toolbars might get reset once upon a time
(for example if you are upgrading to a newer version of lyx) but generally
stay set consistently across sessions (linux here).

If you
1) close all your lyx sessions
2) open new one and set toolbars acccording to your needs
3) close session
4) open new session again the toolbar is lost?

Yes, there are problems with subdir detection, IIRC even the add problems were

Some fixes were committed for upcoming lyx 2.4, but the discussion about the

I doubt it's related to the tmp directory.

When you check out the file is should be read-write, once you check-in it
should-be read-only.
If this attribute is not set properly, RCS will fail.

So my first guess is that while Nextcloud transfers the content of the file it
does not properly transfer read-write attributtes of the file.
Can you check it?

Indeed, I can reproduce the problem, generally selecting line starting with
== to the very end of the document and then insert-note is enough to
trigger it.

Bisect leads to:
commit 5a58ca6576a1fa2d6bea8e9e7927d5779943e593

Fix caret height when inserting new inset

For now, the simplest thing to do it to compute metrics in all cases
before calling setCurrentFont().

In 2.5, a better approach will be to add a new virtual function
InsetText::setFont that will set correctly TextMetrics::font_ (a cache
of the reference font).

Fixes bug #12126.

Can you report whether you can build master sucesfully with Autoconf 2.71?
You can use the attached patch (or change manually those lines in autogen.sh).

We will bump the version once we have some report that it works.

I did not push you to use pandoc. You wanted something more xml-based
for home-baked conversions of the document. Docbook might help and it
would be more helpful to give some feedback than offer scathing
metaphores for dev(s) who made that happen.

.xml based format of lyx is not going to happen for 2.4.

Even better, you could give it a shot while 2.4 is in alpha stage a write

It should be possible to just change image size in its settings,
but that will break proper size in export to other formats.

This is actually regular annoyance I encounter when trying to
export to both pdf & html.
We could perhaps add xhtml-only setting which would be used

Most likely you are connecting to a keyserver which is down.
You can try different server (by passing it through
keyserver parameter). Server hkp://keys.gnupg.net tries
round-robin for multiple servers detected to be online,
so try e.g.:

gpg --keyserver hkp://keys.gnupg.net --recv-keys
FE66471B43559707AFDAD955DE7A44FAC7FB382D

If it does not work please provide exact error message, cheers,

I don't remember all the discussions involved, it's long time ago, one would
need to dig through archives, I even believe that orginal idea was actually
external calls.
Thinking from top of my head, both solutions have pros and cons. E.g. external
call might need more complex error checking (e.g. "git command not found" vs
"git returned error X", differences across OSes), parsing problems (output
messaging across different git versions, different locales or whatnot).
Checking existence of a single dir/file in all parent dirs does not look as
that bad alternative in this light...

Two possible ways how to address the original problem
- improve current detection for registering, in a similar way we do in findFile
- or explicitly show all VCS registrer functions in the menu for all backends
  (File>VCS>"register in {rcs,cvs,svn,git}").

To the somewhat complimentary question - what should be the default VCS used
in case the file is not tracked? I tend to think that RCS is a good one,
because its way less intrusive (single ,v file next to your file) and
you don't need machinery to handle errors around creating new repositories
before you can actually add the file into it.

...from a totally different perspective I am not sure how good idea is
trying to push less tech-savvy people to actualy use our VCS machinery
unless you want to be constantly behind their back any time some VCS-related
problem happens. LyX handling too barebone to actually solve underlying
issues within any of the VCS backends we have...

It would be interesting to try different apps than xfe or gedit, some which
use Qt framework as does LyX.
Qt's handling of clipboard can be tricky and buggy at times, but if other Qt
based apps do work we should have a look at it.

Anyway, if LyX reasonably works under WSL2 it would be worth to create LyX wiki
page
with intructions how to set it up and then I can make direct link from our
official
Download pages.

I am thinking for some while that WSL-based LyX could become in longterm the
best
way how to get LyX working under Windows -- all the LaTeX/python deps and
security
updates for ghostscript and imagemagick solved at one shot by the underlying
distribution... In more than decade we lost so much energy in dicussions and
fights about the windows installers and associated MikTeX bugs which could be
avoided this way.

Interesting. I do not see this problem here (qt4), umask is respected by
lyx so the user2 resaves the file as -rw-rw-r-- with umask 002.

What is not working is group preservation, i.e. the resaved file
has different group ownership. This is sort of buggy, but expected
because IIRC we do not care in the code about group preservation.

Anyway, even if fixed it won't solve your problem and I don't know
how it's triggered.

Yeah, just beware that 2.4 is still moving target (DocBook is stil under
further development) so do not invest too much time to further tuning
of the output until at least 2.4 release candidate is out.

The more positive part is that if you find some problems or bugs in

Most likely no. I have similar problem with Czech keyboard and it boils
down to changes in underlying Qt library, you might be suffering from the

Hmm... either having tristate check box automatic(default)/on/off or list with
these three options would solve it.

But when I am more thinking about it, the best option would probably be to do a
more generic change.
As noted we put additional settings into hypersetup instead directly into
options when declaring usepackage.
Maybe we should allow it to go directly to usepackage options (or create new
field for it, see also #10319).
In that case we would add one more check in the condition above ( &&
!hyperset.contains('unicode=') ).

Editing the same file by alternate booting to both Windows and Linux is a brave
move and I hope you do regular backups :) If by chance your Windows hibernate

you try to edit the lyx file in linux on the mounted drive meanwhile, you might
end up with data loss after new reboot to windows...

Anyway, if the images are stored not that far away, you can use manually

The problem is not really lyx-specific. Our main goal is to produce
source code. So at the end it is the users ditribution who needs to
ship certain version of Qt. Possible year-lag is not a huge problem.

What is concerning here is rather whole Qt-KDE community interaction.
Nontrivial percentage of Qt contributions comes from OSS comunity around. Now,
being such developer, are you going to accept that you need to pay for your own
work if you need the fix soon? The worst possible outcome could be forking Qt
by the OSS community and that's where the "interesting" times would start :)
It wouldn't help the long-term future of the codebase neither for Qt-company nor
for the OSS community, but it might happen if QtC decide that mid-term revenue
is most important thing now.

For LyX itself there is not much to worry about, we'll likely just follow the
big players like KDE or distributions choice :)

Git points to 9b13535e778b9
PDFOptions.cpp: add two hyperref options for better compatibility for non-latin
titles, etc.

It might have been wrong to hardcode it this way, anyway we can't just drop it
from compatibility reasons now. But adding new unicode option to the dialog (by
default on) seems correct solution.
I don't have time to write the patch though.

I agree, it looks like this, and related to commit d30da478d4f (Fix encoding

You have reasonable chance to get that fixed if you upgrade to lyx 2.3.4.

:) The beamer was completely reworked while ago. It is now more powerful, but
the workflow is more harder esp. if you get used to the older ways.

If you are inside slide and want to start next slide (that's why you want
the end of frame separator, right?) you just go to the Insert menu ->
Separated Frame below. This will insert frame end && new frame after that.

I strongly advise to look on new beamer examples, this is not the only
surprise you will encounter...

As we figured out in background, the problem is using ligature 'fl'
as one character instead of normally using two characters. Replacing
them fixes the problem.

Attached is minimal example.

I was not capable to have lyx segfault because of it.

Question, I guess either for Juergen or Guenter, is whether
we should know unicode inside nomenclature and should be fixing
this issue or this kind of use should not be supported.

I think it's time to fill the bug for your distribution.
Theese restrictions were pushed because of new vulnerabilities found
in the imagemagick code and fixed since then. My guess is that they
left those restrictions in place "just for sure" without caring that
some apps like lyx will be affected.

With looking at the code I have idea what could be the problem.

Could by chance try the following experiment:
1. find configure.py of your lyx installation
2. find string "LaTeX (plain)" there and replace it by "LaTeX .plain.", save
file
3. reconfigure lyx
4. try whether import starts showing .tex files

This would not be proper fix, but we just check possible culprit.

I tried to reproduce the problem when using Qt 4.8.6, but still no luck.
Also tried old version of KDE tied to Qt 4.8, but could not reproduce.

If you can compile lyx on your own, you could try to bisect with git
which commit introduced this within the 2.3.3->2.3.4 cycles if you believe
its lyx's fault.
Otherwise I am running out of ideas.

For reporting backtrace ('bt' command in gdb) to give us clue where the crash
occurred the most important is to compile lyx with debug info included
(./configure --enable-debug). Otherwise you loose info about line numbers.

Unless you want to actively step through the code and watch variables

I see, that's basically bakoma fonts we include in lyx, except
two glyphs are missing (\leg being one of them).

If arch packaging systems allows it I would suggest they flag
ttf-computer-modern-fonts and lyx as mutually exclusive packages
so they do not get installed by accident at the same time.

The best would be to get the backtrace if you run lyx under gdb with and
debuging symbols were linked to the binary.

If you are 'lucky' enough to trigger this crash once a day this would be bery
helpful and we can help you to setup you up for the stuff mentioned above.
If you can't reproduce the error anymore then we are probably out of luck to

2.3.3 is already in sid so there's good chance it appears soon in
debian-backports as well.

No it does not. The best you could probably get is either to find
xhtml->tex->lyx conversion route or open xhtml in browser/editor
and try copy/paste into LyX window.

Word count statistics

2019-06-17 Thread Pavel Sanda
Hi,

LyX has currently an issue that the word count statistics does not include
citations. I am unfortunately afraid that there might not be agreement whether
these are proper words or not, depending on the publisher/journal.

In your experience with different publications, how many words constitute these?
[1] : 0/1*
(Goldman et al., 1976) : 0/1/4*

I tend to implement the starred version unless it causes controversy...
Alternatively we could count citation words separately, but I do not like
this solution.

If you can't see any previous error in the messages pane, what Document->Latex

It is *newest* for Mint repository you are using, that's rarely
the same as newest out there in the upstream.
In your case newset version contains basically 6.8.9.9 plus some
minor patches from Mint people.

Because you have it already installed on your computer.

Ok, we are finally nailing down what's actually going on, I think.
There has been security bugs in imagemagick last fall and as a first
defense measure some distros banned conversions from postscript,
while waiting for the proper fix inside imagemagick.

Now, you have either unupdated packages or Mint maintainers decided
to ban imagemagick forever (or they just forgot all about this,
maybe it's worth filling the bug report or query).

Now the workaround is to change file in which they ban the conversions,
that's usually something like file:
/etc/ImageMagick-6/policy.xml

(or wherever you find policy.xml in /etc/ of your machine).

You probably find ban lines like:

and you have to comment them on your own by adding

beyond those "coder" lines.

Note that if you do this workaround and your distro still ships
vulnerable version of imagemagick you should not process through
it pdf/eps/xps files from people you don't trust...

can you try: convert out.eps out.png

I wouldn't switch to debian just because of this.
I am also sceptical that your problem is realted to qt version,
more likely conversion proces fails.

You could try two things:
1. Does pdftops/magick works on your system? Try running

  dftops -eps cancer-development-n.pdf -f 1 -l 1 out.eps
  magick out.eps out.png
and check whether correct out.eps & out.png was generated.

2. If the above works could you
 a) turn on view->messages pane
 b) in setting tab of the pane check selected and choose graphics on the right
side
 c) switch back to output pane
 d) insert in new document cancer-development-n.pdf (which fails as i
understood)
and post here the output from messages pane.

If you don't mind sharing it, you could take *one* part which takes
lot of time, anonymize it little bit via buffer-anonymize lfun and
show it to us, I am willing to have a look and test whether time
on more decent machine actually helps or it's lyx speed problem.

If you are on debian why not use debian way?

1. add stretch-backports to your /etc/apt/sources.list, line like:
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian stretch-backports main

2. update package database
apt-get update

3. install to current lyx stable:
apt-get -t stretch-backports install lyx

Does it work for you?

You mean 3 (none of them major one) out of 66 antivirus toolkits, reports

Given the history of false alarms on this list, my guess is that it speaks

few toolkits than against the current lyx win installer...

It's not code, but changes in fonts and symbols file - nothing processed by
compiler.

Just next burden on your shoulders, but in principle yes.
Cherrypick commits listed in #8493 it should work with Qt5 (I tested only in
Linux so you need to check stmary10.lyx in Windows).
The bug is there for a long time and we get rarely reports like this, so I
assume it's not big issue...

It will be fixed in next major (2.4.x) release.
Not nice workaround but it should be at least visible if you have instant

Interesting, that shouldn't matter in Qt5. Is it that you still use Qt4 in your
config?
My problem is with Qt5.

Agreed, this is just wrong list to ask for the fix, the problem is either
in the config of X/DM or Qt code and it might be difficult to spot who is
actually responsible for the problem...
