The "figure" box in the float is too small for that -and everything you
put in there appears in the figure index. I could do it in the main
text, but I'd rather make sure that it is just beside the float.

That depends on your topic. For example in physics everything is written to the caption of the
figure. The result are figures with huge captions. For engineers it is quite the opposite: the
caption only contains a short description of the image, all explanations and details are given in
the main text of the document.

How can it be too small ? I can put a work by Shakespeare in it.

>-and everything you put in there appears in the figure index.

Then you should try "Insert->Short Title" in the caption of the float. Only the
text within this "opt" inset will be put in the figure index. In this way, you
can have a brief description in the figure index (list).

So, I would put everything you need to understand the figure in the caption.
Any explanation, reasoning, conclusions, remarks, details etc. in the main text.

Hi,

Do you guys have opinions regarding which is the best place to add
explanations to a figure? A longish list of things such as "the pointed
line means blah, and the blue square stands for blah"...

The "figure" box in the float is too small for that -and everything you
put in there appears in the figure index. I could do it in the main

Nope, it's still broken on my system. I'd done all the installation
things (actually, MiKTeX did it all for me, except updating the .map
file), everything was in the right place, and Metafont was finding the
ifgeo10.mf file ok but choking on something in it (or in something it
subsequently loaded). I tried downloading the ifsym package direct from
CTAN, in case the MiKTeX version had a defective file in it, but no joy.

On the other hand, I don't really need the ifsym fonts, so no harm done.
But I remain confused (my natural state).

Follow-up (mainly for the archives): the problem at my end was a
MiKTeX-specific issue. Somewhere along the line, I did an update that
loaded a newer version of the MiKTeX base. Turns out I needed to
execute MiKTeX Options -> General -> Format files -> Update Now, after
which font generation worked.

I did a search on Google and found this pattern.

texmf-dist/fonts/source/public/ifsym/ifclk.gen
texmf-dist/fonts/source/public/ifsym/ifclk10.mf
texmf-dist/fonts/source/public/ifsym/ifclkb10.mf
texmf-dist/fonts/source/public/ifsym/ifgeo.gen
texmf-dist/fonts/source/public/ifsym/ifgeo10.mf

texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/public/ifsym/ifgeo10.tfm
texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/public/ifsym/ifgeob10.tfm
texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/public/ifsym/ifgeobn10.tfm
etc.

So on my linux distro texmf was under
/usr/share/texmf
so I copied ifsym.zip to the respective /public
directories and unzipped ifsym.zip. This will
create the ifsym directory if it doesn't exist
and put all the contents of ifsym.zip into it.

Then from the ./.../ifsym directory I ran
texconfig
which opens a menu window
and I chose REHASH
and now it seems to work to display the correct geom
symbols, "xdvi *.dvi" from any directory I tested. Only
saw one .tfm font so far, that matched with ifgeo10.tfm

Stephen

I downloaded the entire zip package and installed it in /usr/ifsym
since I wasn't sure what the proper path was. I copied texmf.dvi,
the test file, to the same directory. Then ran "xdvi texmf.dvi" and
in displayed properly. Before getting the ifsym package I got the

Hello David,

I was looking at this thread and it stirred my curiousity. It seems
that there is a problem when the metafont is used instead of the .tfm

I looked at my Windows Miktex installation (even though you use Linux)
C:\texmf\fonts\tfm\public\ifsym and found the following fonts:
Directory of C:\texmf\fonts\tfm\public\ifsym

09/01/2001 06:03 PM 380 ifweab10.tfm

So I took your example file posted on comp.text.tex

Wolfson wrote: "and if I run latex on a simple file:

Wolfson continued:
"I get no errors and a dvi file produced. The problem is when I try to

xdvi: Can't find font ifgeo10; using Type1 version of cmr10 instead."

SH: So I pasted your example input into a text editor and saved it as
texmf.tex Then I ran "latex texmf.tex" from the command line, producing the
following information:

and nothing in pdf. This is the same

processing through LyX or LaTeX on the command line.

This appears to be a problem with mktexpk, as if I look at the outputs from
xdvi (rather than running it from gui), I get:

mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for ifgeo10.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
xdvi: Can't find font ifgeo10; using Type1 version of cmr10 instead.

So as I understand it LaTeX now understand ifsym ok and writes the dvi, but
whatever tries to read the dvi (dvips?) doesn't. Does that sound right?

LaTeX writes out a DVI file which contains a command to load the ifgeo10
font. When your DVI viewer (xdvi) tries to load the document, it
discovers that the ifgeo10 font does not (yet) exist in your font
directories, so it tries to run mktexpk to generate the specific font
files. (Fonts are more complicated than I care to get into, but
basically the ifsym package includes font definition files that are
supposed to tell metafont how to generate the needed fonts. I think
mktexpk calls metafont on your system; on my system, it's makepk calling
metafont.) There seems to be a problem with the font definitions
supplied, so metafont fails. After mktexpk returns (unsuccessfully),
xdvi still can't find the needed font, so it substitutes a known font
(cmr10), which produces the 'a' where you expected to find the filled arrow.

You might want to ask on comp.text.tex whether anyone there can figure
out why metafont is failing. (I've looked at the error messages on my
system and can't figure out where the problem exists.) Posting the
contents of the missfont.log file might help.

I had a search through the group and found this:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.text.tex/browse_thread/thread/3a3cf8a882c381f0/f95bb70317f65139?q=install+font&rnum=3#f95bb70317f65139

I followed the instructions on the URL in the above post to:
http://www.tug.org/pipermail/tugindia/2001-August/56.html

which were similar to the instructions in the .ps file you described. I ran
texhash on a simple Tex file, and got an error:
kpathsea: Running mktexmf ifgeo10
! I can't find file `ifgeo10'.
<*> ...=ljfour; mag:=1; nonstopmode; input ifgeo10

so I ran:
mktexmf ifsysm

This appeared to generate a metafont file, which one placed in the texmf tree
(and after another texhash) appeared to sort all the LaTex errors. I then
included the package in a Lyx file preamble( \usepackage[geometry]{ifsym}),
and \FilledTriangleUp in ERT and again this ran fine.

Unfortunately, the output was not as I'd hope. Instead of getting a triangle,
I have an 'a' in the DVI, and nothing in pdf. This is the same processing
through LyX or LaTeX on the command line.

Is this a similar problem to the one you described before?
>Metafont choked trying to generate the
>necessary fonts. It seems to think there is a syntax error in either
>ifgeo10.mf or (more likely) ifgeo.gen, which the former includes.

Thanks for all the help. I've learnt a lot about installing a package now, but
it would be nice if we could get it to work. Are there any more guru tips to
get this going please?

That's consistent with the package not being properly installed.

The ifsym package should include a Postscript file named ifsym.ps, which
is the manual (in German). Section 2 explains where to store the
pieces, after which you have to rebuild the TeX file database (see the
URL above).

Paul,

Thanks for the reply - sorry not to get back to you sooner, I took the
weeekend off!

a) not that I'm aware of! I think this is what I really need some guidance on.
Do I need to install it on the system, as part of Tex/LaTex/Lyx? Is there a
'howto' out there I should look at?

# kpsewhich ifsym.sty

er - ok. I'll have to google some of the terms here, but I get the impression
you saying it worked - nearly.

Cheers,

Dave

PS off to check the local library for The LaTeX Companion, I guess I have some
reading to get up to speed

I think you need \usepackage[geometry]{ifsym} to get \FilledTriangleUp.

surprised to hear that I get another error:

This would suggest that ifsym is not properly installed. Did you (a)
install it and (b) update your TeX file database? If so, try 'kpsewhich
ifsym.sty' from a shell to see if the system knows where to find it.

 \usepackage
{babel}^^M
*** (cannot \read from terminal in nonstop modes)

So I'm guessing that I need to install another font. I've found ifsym at CTAN:
ftp://tug.ctan.org/pub/tex-archive/fonts/ifsym/

but have no idea what to do with it!

I've been looking round the archives/google/CTAN, and have found the rather
intimidating (103 pages) of 'the font installation guide':
ftp://tug.ctan.org/pub/tex-archive/info/Type1fonts/fontinstallationguide/fontinstallationguide.pdf
and some information in the TEX FAQ:

http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=instfont

which goes right over my head! Do I need to go through all this with Lyx, or
can someone point me in the right direction please?

I'm using Lyx1.3.5 installed from rpm on mandrake10.1...

Thanks very much,

Dave

FWIW, I had no trouble installing ifsym (MiKTeX), and no problem
compiling a LyX document containing \FilledTriangleUp (meaning it
generated the DVI file), but Metafont choked trying to generate the
necessary fonts. It seems to think there is a syntax error in either
ifgeo10.mf or (more likely) ifgeo.gen, which the former includes.
