RE: I can't open old Lyx files
Hi Scott, Many thanks for your email. One of your users helped me by opening my file on his computer, save it in the new version and sent it back to me, so unfortunately I deleted the old version. Very sorry about this. Dear Ross and Aaron, Do you have any example files that you can send us that do not open for you on newer versions of LyX? This could really help us fix bugs so that future users do not run into similar problems. Best, Scott

Thanks for giving this feedback. You are right that if you manually change the line LyX will not do the update. This could lead to strange problems. If you come across that problem again, it would be great if you can send us an example document that you can no longer open. This way we will be able to fix the root bug. Or perhaps it happens will all files? If so, then it is probably the case that LyX is having trouble calling lyx2lyx. I seem to recall several issues with Windows and Python in the past. But if this were the case, it seems we would also have trouble calling configure.py. Scott signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Either LyX is having trouble running lyx2lyx (we can test this by sending you a simple LyX document in the 2.0.x format), or there is a bug in lyx2lyx and it is not updating the file correctly. Yes, there is something wrong and the question is what. LydX is supposed to convert old files to the new format. Of course, there can be bugs that prevent this from happening, but those are, well, bugs, and we take them very, very seriously. I.e., we try to fix them as fast as possible. In this case, if there is a bug that is preventing files from being converted to 2.2 format, then we want to know about it NOW and get it solved NOW. So please report all such bugs. They can usually be fixed very fast if we have example files that we can use to investigate them. Re: I can't open old Lyx files
I often have the same problem. To solve I usually just open the file and edit this to match the current version of LyX. I must be doing something wrong because you'd think the files would be automatically upconverted but for some reason I have to manually edit them, but it works. Thanks, Áron PS: I am not a techy guy... Hi Áron, Thank you When reporting problems like these, it's always helpful if you are specific. When you say "I cannot open old Lyx files", that doesn't give us much information to go off of. Why can't you open old LyX files? LyX does not open? Or it opens and gives an error? How exactly are you opening the LyX files from within LyX using File > Open or are you double-clicking them in your file browser? Also when giving a bug report, it's useful to say what your operating system is and what the version of your operating system is. For example, I'm using Ubuntu 15.04. He did mention that he was using Windows 7. However, the suggestion that he provide more detail about what happened when he tried to open the files is helpful. BTW, I have no trouble opening 10+ -year old files, so there is something amiss. -- David L. Johnson Department of Mathematics Lehigh University

Finally, what is your LyX version? Is it 2.1.4? You can find this information in Help > About. Is there an old LyX file that does not open for you that is confidential, that you could send to this list (which would make it public)? Or are they all private (which is understandable of course)? Please respond to the list and not to me personally. Best, Scott signature.asc Description: PGP signature
