Hmm, been trying to use some IPA in documents - does anyone else have
the problem that when instant preview is used and you can see the IPA,
the formatting of the document is really weird (as in, you can't put
it inside a large amount of text, there is a very large gap between
the display and the rest of the text). When you go back into editing
mode, it is fine.

Also, any ideas on how to get around shortcuts which use the pipe

into the equasion.

I think you have to fool mathed. The following hack works for me (the
mathematicians might come up with a better solution):

In preamble:
\newcommand{\breakline}{\\}

(the LaTeX commands \linebreak and \newline do not work)

And then:

Did anyone find out how to make it so glosses go under the nodes on
the tree - usually with the // command? Also, is there a way to make
it automatically preview all of the images once you open a document

I have edited the TIPA documentation. Most notably, xytree is not
needed at

all to enter \textipa.

thanks, jürgen! it's wonderful.

on a related note... i have a bit of a problem with trees that
contain greek letters (for syllables and moraic structure, for example):

sigma
   / \
mu mu

this should be easy to do, but for some reason lyx freezes when i try
to typeset. i use lyx 1.3.7 and mac os 10.4.4. i enter the following
in math/text mode:

\Tree [."sigma symbol" "mu symbol" "mu symbol " ]

and all i get is errors (missing brackets, etc.). qtree is definitely
working correctly, as i can view and typeset \Tree [.a b c ] w/o a
problem. am i doing something wrong? does anyone know another way of
making trees with greek letters as nodes?

Well, since it is a wiki simply write what you think is correct. If it
turns out that there is a better way, then somebody else will mention it,
but somebody needs to start.

To make things clear: xymatrix support is not going to be removed in 1.4
in general. It is possible that 1.4.0 will not have it due to the fact
that this bug was discovered only during the freeze, but 1.4.1 will have
it for sure. If 1.4.0 will not have it that will be mentioned in the
release notes, and those who rely on it will need to wait for 1.4.1.

I've set up covington by wiring it in as a paragraph environment and
modifying the default "article" class. The general instructions for
doing the latter can be found at http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/
lyx/index.htm#textclass_mod_tut.

This will not display the numbers themselves in the LyX file, but
everything (including the cross-references) will typeset correctly in
the PDF. In the LyX file, the numbered example lines will appear as
blue text. As for the layout file itself, mine looks as follows. Save
it as something like "article_numbered.layout" and copy it to the
layouts folder of your LyX app support directory.

It's obvious LyX can support this stuff, we just have to get it
implemented in a better way! I noticed when I went back to my
document, it forgot to do instant preview until I clicked the formula
boxes a bunch of times, which was inconvenient.

It's also bad that after just learning this, the support will go away
in LyX 1.4. Please vote on this bug too, to reintroduce xymatrix
support:

2006-02-17 Thread Maria Gouskova
Stacia, this is great--I thought the only way to do trees and IPA in
LyX was in ERT. I don't know how many linguists are on this list, but
what do people think of starting a wiki page "LyX for Linguists,"
similar to "LaTeX for linguists"?

http://www.essex.ac.uk/linguistics/clmt/latex4ling/

Linguists, as opposed to, say mathematicians, have pretty specific
typographic and formatting needs that aren't obvious in LyX, such as:

- a numbered paragraph environment, in parentheses, with numbering
sequential throughout the document
- table editing: double lines, dashed lines, shaded table cells (for
Optimality Theory)

- pointy hand symbol (for Optimality Theory)
- IPA fonts
- trees, syntactic and autosegmental/prosodic
- aligned glosses
- math symbols intermingled with phonetic symbols
- switching from one language's orthography to another in the same
document/paragraph/line

Some of this is covered on Doug Arnold's LaTeX for linguists page,
but it would be nice to have a LyX-specific translation for
newcomers. If one ends up doing everything in ERT, LyX loses some of
its considerable charm!

I'd be happy to contribute what I've learned about the tasks above.
(I don't know how to do everything in that list, though.)

That's nice indeed. Even if I knew we have some provisional code for tipa in
our sources, I never figured out how to use it, and stuck with ERT.

I think you should create an info page on the LyX wiki for this.

AFAIK xymatrix was removed because it was rather buggy. Anyway, I think
there's interest to readd it again soon, maybe even enhance it, see:

Sorry about the spam, but I figured out how to get simple trees from
qtree working (I much prefer it to xytree, but I thought only that
might work because of the xy library or something) Try a tree like
this:
\xymatrix{\text{\Tree[.S [.N This ] [.V is ] [.NP [.Det a ] [.N test ] ] ] } }

and then hit the convert to formula button. Yay! Doesn't work with
qtree, though, for some reason.

TIPA (IPA) and limited tree support previews in LyX, working!

2006-02-16 Thread Stacia Hartleben
Hi there! I was messing around after looking at this tutorial
(http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/XY-pic) on how to get XY pic to work on LyX
and I got some limited tree support with xytree and TIPA working!

Here's what you do. Install xytree and tipa packages. Then try some
example things like this:

\xymatrix{& \xynode[-1,1]{S} \\ \xynode[0]{NP} & & \xytrinode{VP} \\
\xyterminal{It} & & \xyterminal{is raining} }

\xymatrix{ \text{\textipa{ABCDEFGHIJKLMOPQRS} } }

The first will display a tree the second will display some text with
TIPA right before your very eyes. Read more on the xytree package
about how to make other trees and stuff. Just remember to replace
xytree with xymatrix. I heard that this support was going out in LyX
1.4, but this makes me very sad. Since it's so easy to add the support
for trees and TIPA like this, why not add it for real in the next
release? I'm sure it would make many linguists very happy.
