OK, so you're not using the official packages, but the development PPA instead.
https://launchpad.net/~lyx-devel/+archive/ubuntu/daily

As per the PPA's description:
lyx2.1 -- daily builds of the upcoming (stable) minor release
lyx2.2 -- daily builds of the upcoming (development) major release

If you want to use stable LyX, you need to install the package `lyx`,
nothing else. If you want to use development versions (*not
recommended* unless you know what you're doing), then you should
install either lyx2.1 or lyx2.2. In either case, all these
installations are independent so you can have them all installed at
the same time on your system (but beware not to edit a document in one
version, and then re-edit in another).

~/.lyx/layouts (I think) on *nix; C:\Documents and

normal default location for your personal home directory) (and the
latter may not be correct if you're stuck with Vista).

FYI, Help > About LyX tells you, where the personal folder ("User Directory")

When compiling LyX from source, additional packages are needed to
obtain full functionality. The default binary installation
(Synaptic/apt-get) will not install these additional packages because
they are not required nor suggested.

You can get the source from
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.5.5.tar.gz (this is the link
from www.lyx.org). Just download it and save it somewhere. Then
extract it (I just right-click and say Extract Here).

Then open a terminal and browse to the extracted directory and 'do the
rest (./configure, etc)'. In Ubuntu you will have to do:
./configure
make
sudo make install

Also, try to search in Synaptic for 'aiksaurus' the libaiksaurus-dev
package should show up. It gives you access to the thesaurus in LyX.

It is probably easier just to do
   apt-get build-dep lyx
on the terminal command line. This will get all packages Ubuntu needs
to build lyx-1.5.3, which will almost certainly be the same as
lyx-1.5.5. (and if not you can always get those individual packages

Programs available under Synaptic are pre-compiled binaries by the
package maintainers for Ubuntu. The only way you'll get a higher
version is if the maintainers update the package version or provide an
updated package through the backports.

However, it's extremely easy to compile LyX yourself from source. Just
install (from Synaptic):
automake
autoconf
gcc
g++
libqt4-dev
libaiksaurus-dev

Then get the LyX 1.5.5 source and:
./configure
make
make install

Done.

If you want to maintain LyX 1.5.3 (and have two different versions of
LyX) then you would:
./configure --with-version-suffix=-1.5.5
make
make install

If you know how to install LyX from the source, then it is not
difficult to create the rpm if you use checkinstall. In fact, it is
trivial.

Yes, but the problem is I haven't the required time to do it; more over, I
think my technical skills aren't apt for that.

A possible (and obvius) solution would be to erase the actual rpm installed in
my box and after try to install the newest version from sources.

Create the rpm yourself seems to be the best policy for you. You could
try to install the i586 rpm for Suse 9.3, but it is not guaranteed
that it will work fine.

Update LyX

2006-03-13 Thread Jordi Espasa Clofent
Hello,

I see the comments of the users are favourables about the LyX new version;
nowadays I use the 1.3.7 version in my SUSE desktop-production box an I'm
asking myself about the update is recommended.

I've seen there are two packets for SUSE distro in /bin subdirectory of
primary ftp LyX public server: 1.4.0 (Qt) for i586 machines and 9.2 and 9.3
and 1.4.0 (Qt too) for x86_64 machines and 10 SUSE versions.

My box mounts SUSE 10.0 and it's i586 architecture, so ¿How do I make the
update?

Thanks.

UPDATE: LyX to (html,ps,pdf) script

2001-07-12 Thread Fernando Pérez

Update:

A. Poenitz found a dumb quoting error I made in yesterday's posting of this
script (note to self: don't post code at 3am when too tired to think).

The attached version is fixed and should work (I *did* check it :-)

Subject: LyX to (html,ps,pdf) script

Hi Lyxers,

attached is a Perl script I wrote called lyxpub (short for "lyx publish",
for lack of a better name!). It borrows heavily from contributions by S.
Evers, but tries to be a bit cleaner and more robust (also do more).

>From the mini-documentation:

A simple Perl script which takes a LyX or TeX file as its only argument
(with or without extension) and produces HTML, PostScript and PDF versions
of the document.

I have tested it with some documents and it seems to work, but I'm sure
there are still many problems with it. Hopefully it will be useful to
others, and I would appreciate any comments/suggestions/bug reports/bug
fixes (especially the latter! :-)

Feel free to play with it and let me know what you think. Hopefully it will
ease the pain of making multiple versions from a LyX document in all the
cases when a simple lyx --export doesn't do what you want.

Regards,

Fernando.

PS: If anyone thinks it is appropriate, feel free to repost to the
lyx-devel list.

UPDATE: Lyx 1.1.6fix1 for Win32

2001-02-05 Thread Claus Hentschel

Due to the fact, that I have forgotten to patch two lines in the shell
script
/usr/local/lyx/share/lyx/configure
today I have corrected both downloadable distribution files:
lyx116fix1.zip
lyx116fix1u.zip
The file 'configure' itself is available, too for all who have downloaded
the newest release since 2001-02-02!

Furthermore: Because some users wrote about LyX hanging up when typing any
key I have made available the X11 DLL's from LyX 1.1.5fix2. Some of those
mentioned users were able to fix that problem by using the old libraries
instead!

Anyway! Have a look at
http://www.fh-hannover.de/mbau/tim/hentschel/lyx/index.htm
