Please see attached for how I use vphantom—it's not pretty in LyX, but it
works well in the final PDF.

Note: I did/saved this with 2.4.0a1.

I've attached three screenshots. The first (shot1.png) shows LyX open
with a new document, containing two copies of your example. The first
copy is pasted into an ERT box (so that I can see what you are
shooting
for). The second has most of your example, but not the nested
brackets,
typed into a multiline math environment. The first line of the
multiline
formula is selected, so that I can put a left bracket in front of it.

The second screenshot shows the delimiter insertion dialog. Note
that I
unchecked the "keep matched" box below the left pane, then selected a
left bracket in the left pane and "(None)" in the right pane.

The third screenshot shows the formula after I click "Insert" in the
delimiter dialog. There is a large left bracket at the start of the
first line and "phantom" bracked (dotted line) at the end of the
first
line. To insert other brackets, do similar things, selecting the
content
of the bracketed area and where appropriate selecting none on the
left
and a closing bracket on the right.

Paul,

Thanks for picking up the thread!  If you provide the LyX file for

Thanks for the reply. I can't see how to do this. Inserting
Delimiters seems to insist on inserting a pair of delimiters - I don't
see any way to just get \left[ for example.

To accomplish this, I prefer to use the Insert Delimiters capability (the
subject of an adjacent thread). Using "none" will let you give the
appearance of matched delimiters that vertically scale to contain the
contents. The "Swap & Reverse" button is meant as a convenience to control
delimiter insertion in this manner. Finally, if you have lines that vary
in vertical extent, a vertical phantom (\vphantom) with the proper contents
will ensure consistent delimiter sizes.

Hope this helps,

Use the large brackets, blank on the left, } on the right, and put a

Well, this is what I want to have, but I don't see any predefined option for

There is only an option for double braces { } in the equation editor of LyX.

When in math mode on that same menu bar that shows the {}, there is

Use the large brackets, blank on the left, } on the right, and put a
matrix inside it of size nx2, where n is the number of cases you want.

how to input multiline equations

2011-01-18 Thread xiaochu

hi everyone:
I used \eqnarray to input an equation with both very long left hand
side and right hand side. to enter display mode first, then
Command+enter. there are three boxes at each row. No matter how I
adjusted the position of the equation in these three boxes. The result
turns out to be quite ugly. Can anyone help? thanks a lot.

Is it a single equation that you want to break onto two lines? If so, use the
AMS multline environment instead of eqnarray. If not and I have misunderstood
your problem, you solution is still to use one of the other AMS environments;
even if you get eqnarray to produce roughly the result you want, it gets the
spacing slightly wrong.

To use multiline:
 1. create some math (inline, display, or whatever)
 2. right click on it and choose AMS environment, and from that submenu
choose
AMS multline
 3. type the left hand side of the equation you want to typeset (this line will
be left aligned)
 4. press ctrl+enter, which puts you onto a new line
 5. type the right hand side of the equation (this line will be left aligned)

If you repeat 4 and 5, so that you have more than two rows, then only the last
line will be right aligned and the ones in between will be centered, even
though
LyX doesn't show them like that.

If the left and right hand sides aren't *too* long, this may not look right.
Instead use an AMS align environment, putting everything on the right hand
side, and prefixing all lines except the first with \qquad.

default math mode for multiline equations

2009-07-28 Thread Oscar Lopez

Dear lyxers

I would like to know if there is some way to customize the math
environment that lyx provides when Ctrl+Enter is used (multiline

Now I would like to use lyx memoir book together with AMS math package
but using gather environment as the default environment for multiline
math expressions. However, I cannot find at the preferences or layout
files where this can be set. Sorry if I have missed something evident
but I've checked documentation and gmane mailing lists and I couldn't
find any answer. Can I customize lyx behaviour to get gather multiline

the problem is the use of boxed and not-boxed
equations. delete all the stuff from latex
preamble and choose the above for boxed math
arrays and than all should work well.

Re: Boxing multiline equations : variations

2001-06-25 Thread krzys

 1) Would it be possible to have outside the box a
 number for each equation ?

same as for standard formulas. hit ctrl-enter to
get an array and than alt-m-n for numbering each
 line.

 2) Would it be possible to have a frame without
 numbering at all.

yes, alt-m-N toggles numbering for single rows
 and alt-m-n for all.

Sorry, I should have told that I've tried that before
writing here, it does not work :
-If I toggle numbering for all rows, or individual,
numbering appears inside the frame, AND one numbering
appears outside the box.
-If I want no numbering, there is still the one
outside the box which remains.

I should tell you too that my LyX version is 1.0.4
(? is this the problem)

 3) To optimize the size of the frame box, it was

what is optimize? as wide as possible or something
else??

To adjust the size of the frame to the size
of the equation the eqnarray is redefined :

\renewenvironment{eqnarray}%
  {%   code for \begin{}
  \stepcounter{equation}%
  \let\@currentlabel\theequation
...

The problem is that the multiline equations
for which I don't use the \mybox{...} function look
bad :
there are not centered anymore (they are left
aligned)
and the numbering comes right after them.
(LyX version problem ?)

Boxing multiline equations : variations

2001-06-23 Thread krzys

Hi,

I have used the Math-Tips from Lyx-Tips
(http://www.educat.hu-berlin.de/~voss/lyx/mathmode.ht
ml#equn_2) page to box a multiline equation. OK :
there is a frame box around the equations and outside
the box a single number for all these equations :

1) Would it be possible to have outside the box a
number for each equation ?

2) Would it be possible to have a frame without
numbering at all.

3) To optimize the size of the frame box, it was
necessary to redefine the eqnarray environment so,
all the others multiline equations without frame look
bad. I imagine you have to do a copy of the eqnarray
environment before redefining it ...

I am not good at LaTex programming yet, so please
help.

Example: 2 multilined equations, only the second one

a = b+c (#)
d = e+f (toto)
I want to clear "toto" so that the equation is still
numbered but not labelled anymore: (#).
Insert-Label-Clear doesn't work.

multiline equations

2000-09-19 Thread oliver Grampp

Hallo,

i have a question and don\'t no where to ask it.
 I work with SuSE Linux 6.4 and (K)Lyx (Klyx 0.10.0 / Lyx 1.1.4fix1.
I want to write an equation with more than one line ({eqnarray}).
The manual says that i can make a new line with CTRL-ENTER. But this
 doesn't work.

 What's wrong?

When i write a Latex document with \begin{eqnarray*} and
\end{eqnarray*} and import this file with lyx it works. But when i have
inserted some lines and delete some of them the size of the mathed box
doesn't become smaller.

best regards

Oliver

if you were in the inline-mode, it's not possible to choose eqnarry.

multiline equations

Oliver

Multiline Equations: Arrays, Display Size, HFill and Brackets

2000-06-21 Thread Alexander M. Budge

My documents contain many multiline equations which I typeset in arrays
to get the alignments right. I am having three problems-- one real, one
aesthetic, the other somewhere in-between.

The real problem being that I cannot seem to get (math-size display-style)
to stick to any cell but the first. No matter where I issue the command,
LyX seems to place the \displaystyle LaTeX command only in the first
cell of the first row. Do I need to highlight the target cell in a certain
way, or issue a command to select the target cell?

The aesthetic problem being in the usage of the fixed-sized brackets. It
would be very nice if LyX rendered the \Bigl[ \Bigr] series of commands,
which are necessary whenever a bracketed expression doesn't fit on a
single line! I really hope LyX already does this and I just missed it in
the UserGuide -- if so, let me know how!

The in-between problem: why can't I place an \hfill in a math equation
using Insert-Special Character-HFill? (p.s. of course, it would be super
nice for readability if LyX rendered the \hfill, but it is very understand-
able that it doesn't and it would be mostly "icing on the cake," as they
say.) I sometimes accomplish a similar end by using \multicolumn in LaTeX,
does LyX support this for arrays as it does for tables in some manner?

I really appreciate LyX's ability to render the majority of the mathematical
expressions and would be very disappointed if all this power and beauty is
lost for the simple but long expressions that I use very often! (p.s. what
prevents LyX from rendering \ell, \epsilon, \mp, \circ, \triangle and the
like? Is it a font mapping/availability issue?)

Thanks,
Alex
