Braven 650 Premium Bluetooth Speaker System

2013-07-17 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I've ordered one of these and I hope to have it by the end of the week so I'll
be able to write a mini review on the product.

The Braven 650 system is supposed to be far better than the Jawbone Jambox and
that product wasn't bad except for its absolutely dreadful hands free speaker
phone feature, the other fact that stopped me using it was its Bluetooth
compatibility, the Jambox isn't - as far as I know - compatible with Bluetooth
4.0 devices such as the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy etc, Bluetooth 4.0 provides
superior bandwidth to previous Bluetooth versions and it can be used without
problems for dictation, Siri and the like.

Re: Using Pages With Mac and iOS

2013-07-17 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hello:
I use Pages in both platforms and it just works fine. The only thing, is that
when you edit a document in mac and you include certain paragraph stiles, those
stiles can not be viewed in Pages for iOS. But it doesn't really matter, as the
document it self doesn't change.
I find this really useful, because I use my iPad a lot of times during meetings
and I love to have my info updated on the go.

I need to change an account from Pop3 to IMap

2013-07-17 Thread Chris Gilland
How easy is it to change an account on my IPhone/IPad from Pop3 to IMap in
the Mail, Contacts, Calendars settings payne of IOS?

I confess for the most part, I know IOS like the back of my hand, and could
navigate and use it in my sleep, but Mail on a mobile device still is kind
of a new concept to me. I'm only just really beginning to do more e-mail
from my phone and IPad. So, if someone could give me a little hand. I
really hope I don't have to delete the entire account then just manually
reset it up. I'll do that if I have to, dont' get me wrong, but it's
definitely not my preference if I can just edit that one portion of its
profile configuration.

Final question about IOS for now: copying from e-mail/web page

2013-07-17 Thread Chris Gilland
OK, a lot of you have told me that you can do a penching gesture to select
and unselect text if I need to copy something directly from a web page or
from an e-mail. I'm just not seeming on my IPhone 5 to have any luck with
this at all. I've tried and tried and tried, and it just doesn't work. I'm
taking my right thumb, putting it almost completely touching my other 4
fingers on my right hand, and then very slowly am moving my 4 fingers twoard
the top speaker part of the phone, moving upward toward the status bar at
the top of the screen, while I'm letting my thumb kind a slide downward if
you will from the place it was more toward the mouthpiece near the bottom of
the screen. More easily explained, I'm basically spreading my thumb down
away from my other 4 fingers which are touching on the screen. This is not
selecting anything though when I do this. If anything, it's having no
effect at all. Someone told me actually, I need to do this gesture while in
landscape orientation, not while in portrait, but both ways, it's not
working. Yes, I am certain that my orientation wasn't locked to portrait.
I am a very very low partial, but I have just enough vision to see that I
could easily tell that the phone definitely was rotated to landscape. I
tried it both with the home key on my left, and again with it on my right.
Again, I tried it in portrait with the home key toward me, and again with it
pointing out away from me. Basically, I've turned the phone in all 4
directions possible. I even have tried penching with my thumb, index, and
middle fingers only. I've tried with my thumb, index, middle, and ring
only. then finally I tried with all 5, my thumb, index, middle, ring, and!
pinki. Never penching together nor moving apart has worked.I just wonder if
someone could tell me step by step how to do this to insure that it
definitely! will work. In explaining, can you give me a very specific
exercize to try, and tell me within that exercize step by step what you want
me to do, so that I can get the hang of this? If I need first to slide with
one finger around the screen and locate the line of text first that I want
to start selecting from, then you need to tell me that in my directions.
Don't assume that I know what I'm doing, as I obviously don't. Be as
detailed, and as specific as you can possibly be. Pretend you're talking to
a dummy. LOL! Not really, but, yeah...

This is IOS 6.1.4, on an IPhone 5.

Re: Final question about IOS for now: copying from e-mail/web page

2013-07-17 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Chris,

I am no expert re selecting text etc, and i should tell you that of all the
VO gestures, selecting text is the least well thought out. It seems to vary
depending upon where you are re apps etc, so you can never be quite sure. The
easiest way to deal with selecting text is to use a separate keyboard, upon
which, there are various key commands to help you do this.

Now, I shall try to assist re the pinch gesture, but others will probably
do better! Your first mistake is to use more than 2 digits. This pinch gesture
will only work with 2 fingers or thumbs. All of us do this differently, I
selected the following from your message by using my 2 index fingers, sliding
them apart across the screen, having first chosen lines in the rotor. I don't
think it matters if you are in landscape or portrait, i have mine set to
portrait/locked. But withever way you have your phone, you must slide your
fingers as if in line with the text, so, if in portrait mode, slide them across
the narrow axis of the screen.

A tip I learned from David, on this list, was to sort of hit the screen
running. That is, rather than place your fingers on the screen and then slide
them apart, start from just above the screen, so they touch the screen as you
lower them and slide them apart at the same time. I sort of feel like a
conductor, making two U shapes with my 2 index fingers.

possibly, I have made this even more incomprehensible to you, but at least
one thing should be clear, use only 2 digits.

Here is my selected/copied text from your message.

OK, a lot of you have told me that you can do a penching gesture to select and
unselect text if I need to copy something
Sandy.

iPhone5 ate my mail?

Yesterday our cable went out and so did my wifi, then. I was outside on

She never got it. Where'd it go? It's not in the sent items, and it's

Should have not I been automatically transferred to cellular data then and

Take care and thanks,

Hello everybody

Does anybody know whether the new version of Logic Pro X is accessible? I
see it is in the App store, and I'm wondering whether we'd get better
results with an editor like that which is designed for the type of work
Gordon wants to do.
Thoughts, please?

Hi Danielle,

Thanks so much for responding! You have given me lots of hope about going this
way! So, when you're transferring files between your Mac and your iDevice how
is it done? Are the transfers done through iTunes? If so, is it very
complicated to do? I don't love using iTunes for much, but maybe I can get the
hang of it! Again, thanks!

I use Pages in both platforms and it just works fine. The only thing, is that
when you edit a document in mac and you include certain paragraph stiles,
those stiles can not be viewed in Pages for iOS. But it doesn't really
matter, as the document it self doesn't change.
I find this really useful, because I use my iPad a lot of times during
meetings and I love to have my info updated on the go.

BBC IPlayer revisited

2013-07-17 Thread Andy Collins
Hi all -

Sorry to revisit this, but need some more help from a UK resident.

This time, I was trying to listen to a programme that was on BBC2 on Monday
[15th] at 8.30 in the evening. It was Count Arthur Strong. I have no problem
locating the particular programme, using both Safari and Chrome, but I am still
unable to find a way to play the programme. I have tried the suggestions
offered before, such as using the item chooser, or the roter to get in to
links, and search for listen or play or watch, but nothing doing. Whatever I
do, I always get taken to the IPlayer, and I see the 'keyboard access help'
link, and of course, that is just for those using JAWS and NVDA. Anyway, after
that keyboard help link, comes the video player, but it isn't a standard link,
so can't be clicked. The only difference here between Safari and Chrome, is
that where as Safari does nothing when VO space is pressed, Chrome will say
something like video player html.

If perhaps Anne, or somebody else could be kind enough to see if they can get
this programme to play, and give me the steps that made is possible, I'd be
extremely grateful as I just can't get anywhere with it. I know there is Get
IPlayer, but from all the struggles people seem to be having with that, I''m
not sure I want to go in that direction, unless absolutely nothing else will
work.

Many thanks -

Andy

 Hi Judy,
Are you saying that its the programs in the search results? To download a
program in the search results you have to add it to the download queue so the
fact that there are more programs in the search results than you want is not
a problem. If you just search on a few words in the program title you would
expect the search results to contain a lot of programs in addition to the
ones you want. the more specific you make the search string the fewer
programs will appear in the search results.
All this is expected so I suspect I have misunderstood your concern.

 Hello Judy,
I have pasted the Get iPlayer Automator article below. I hope this
 helps

Playing TV and Radio programs on an Apple Macintosh

The free App ‘Get iPlayer Automator’ is a great way to download and play
TV and radio programs on an Apple Macintosh. You can download TV programs
from the BBC , ITV and Channel 4 and radio programs from the BBC
including those from regional stations. You can search for desired
programs by entering words which might appear in the program title and
you can set preferences to download the audio described version of the
program if it is available. You can request that downloaded programs are
automatically added to your iTunes library from where you can play them
or transfer them to portable devices such as iPhone, iPod, and iPad. You
can automatically add programs which are part of a series to your
download queue as they become available. Finally if you live outside the
UK you can still download British TV and radio programs via a provided
 proxy.

Get iPlayer Automator requires Mac OS 10.7 or later. You can download it
 free from
 http://tom-tech.com/iplayer_automator/iPlayer_Automator/Get_iPlayer_Automator.html.
Copy the ‘Get iPlayer Automator.app’ from your download folder to your
application folder and open it. Wait a few seconds and you will be
invited to upgrade to the latest level which at the time of writing is
1.5.3 (536). You now need to change a few of the default preferences.
Open the preference pane for Get iPlayer Automator and go to the general
tab. If you live in the UK you must set the Proxy option to None. The
default is Provided which should work if you live outside the UK but I
have no way to test this. If you want to download BBC radio programs as
well as TV programs ensure that BBC Radio and BBC Podcasts options are
checked in the Items to Cache group. These are not checked by default.
Also ensure that the Download Audio Described and Signed Versions option
is checked. This is checked by default and will download the audio
described version of a program if it is available. If no audio described
version is available it will download the standard version. Now close the
 preference pane.

To download a program first enter one or more words which might appear in
the program title into the Search For Shows edit box and press the Enter
key. After a few seconds look in the Search Results table for the desired
show(s) and select them. Now press the Add To Queue button to add the
desired show(s) to the download queue. Then check that the desired
show(s) really are in the download queue and if this queue contains any
unwanted shows select them and press the - button to remove them. Now go
to the Toolbar and press the Start button to start downloading the
desired show(s). These will be saved in the Download Path specified in
the preference pane which by default is set to the Movies/TV Shows folder
in your user area. Downloaded TV programs will also appear in the TV

Hi!

I've ordered one of these and I hope to have it by the end of the week so
I'll be able to write a mini review on the product.

The Braven 650 system is supposed to be far better than the Jawbone Jambox
and that product wasn't bad except for its absolutely dreadful hands free
speaker phone feature, the other fact that stopped me using it was its
Bluetooth compatibility, the Jambox isn't - as far as I know - compatible
with Bluetooth 4.0 devices such as the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy etc,
Bluetooth 4.0 provides superior bandwidth to previous Bluetooth versions and
it can be used without problems for dictation, Siri and the like.

Re: hello i think you might be wrong about the jam box not working with the iphone 5 because i have the old jam box and i use it every day with my iphone 5 with no problems have a good day RE: Braven

2013-07-17 Thread Dane Trethowan
Okay, you didn't put your message in the body of the eMail so I hope I read
everything properly and so to the point.

I didn't say that the Older Jambox wouldn't work with the iPhone 5, the iPhone
5 has a newer version of Bluetooth that the oder Jambox - too my knowledge -
doesn't support.

The newer version of Bluetooth allows for far better voice quality etc than
does the old.

If you use a Jambox with an iPhone 5 or any other Bluetooth 4.0 device then all
that happens is that the device falls back to the standard of Bluetooth the
Jambox etc is using.

Re: BBC IPlayer revisited

2013-07-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

If you're talking about BBC television, then your only option is Get iPlayer
Automator.

Cheers,

Anne

On 17 Jul 2013, at 18:54, Andy Collins a...@recreation.plus.com wrote:

 Hi all -

Sorry to revisit this, but need some more help from a UK resident.

This time, I was trying to listen to a programme that was on BBC2 on Monday
[15th] at 8.30 in the evening. It was Count Arthur Strong. I have no problem
locating the particular programme, using both Safari and Chrome, but I am
still unable to find a way to play the programme. I have tried the
suggestions offered before, such as using the item chooser, or the roter to
get in to links, and search for listen or play or watch, but nothing doing.
Whatever I do, I always get taken to the IPlayer, and I see the 'keyboard
access help' link, and of course, that is just for those using JAWS and NVDA.
Anyway, after that keyboard help link, comes the video player, but it isn't a
standard link, so can't be clicked. The only difference here between Safari
and Chrome, is that where as Safari does nothing when VO space is pressed,
Chrome will say something like video player html.

 Andy

Logic Pro X Initial Findings

2013-07-17 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi all

Well, I've only just started playing and the downloading of the additional
plug-ins and sample instruments is huge, just under 50GB in total. So far, I
can only say that the in initial projects window is much more accessible than
the previous version of Logic Pro that I tried on my brother-in-law's Mac about
a year ago. All I got that time was Unknown, unknown, from VoiceOver. Now, I
am getting the correct project status read as I scroll through the demos.

Too soon to get over-excited but one thing I can tell you. It supports
GarageBand projects and enhances them according to the documentation. So if
you've used GB to create a project, you can import it into Logic Pro X and do
enhanced work. It comes with over a thousand samples, loops and virtual
instruments. It is this aspect which excites me because if indeed it is fully
GarargeBand compatible, then my M-Audio keyboard should work. I'm hoping to be
able to create some audio content for our radio projects, amongst other things.
I've been talking to a friend of mine today who runs a company which produces
audio stuff for use on commercial radio and TV. If you are a Smooth Radio
listener here in the UK, you'll have heard Alex's work and actually I believe
he's also done some stuff for US radio organisations as well. But anyway I'm
getting off the point. The point here is that Alex has told me that he's more
than interested to see how this goes with regards accessibilit
 y. It could be of use to him as well if I can help him with some of his work
load. He uses ProTools primarily, with a 24-bit digital mixer console
purchased from the BBC when they decommissioned it. That is the core of his
studio setup. But he uses a lot of hardware music-creation stuff which I can
only dream about! He is more than willing to help me though if this works.
That's why Lynne decided to take the plunge and test it. If it works, great,
so much the better for us all. If it does, I will produce an audio demo for
the Sparkle Radio Techno Chat series which is broadcast from here.

Kind regards

--- Gordon Smith ---

I notice that when I hear the system voice, as when I check for the time, it is

Re: Logic Pro X Initial Findings

2013-07-17 Thread Chris Moore
Gordon,

I have not purchased Logic X yet, as already have Logic 9 Studio which I used
to use whilst I could see. Since Logic 8, you have always been able to import
Garage Band projects, so nothing new here.

Most of the library which you download for Logic X, used to come on various
DVDs with logic 9 Studio.

Were you not tempted to purchase Pro Tools? Pro Tools is much more accessible
on the Mac than Logic.

I think Logic is fantastic value for money, so do hope Voiceover support is
improved.

Hi Chris

We may do that as well. But Lynne decided to take the plunge, and if this

guess. ProTools is about 4 times the price, and the other aspect that made us

M-Audio keyboard which has been kind of butchered by the manufacturers so that
all the synthesiser and other internal stuff is missing. It's designed to work

your point though about importing projects. I'm just hoping that the rest of

Difficulty calling and then using keypad with iPhone and Siri

2013-07-17 Thread David Griffith

I have a problem using the iPhone and Siri. When I tried to make a call
using Siri to access the contacts, I find that I am them unable to access
the keypad in order to press keys when required on that call. Presumably
this is a problem which occurs when ever making a call from the contacts
list.
How can then access the Keypad? I cannot get Voiceover to announce the
keypad tab.

Re: Logic Pro X Initial Findings

2013-07-17 Thread Chris Moore
Gordon,

You have described a MIDI controller keyboard, which you probably connect via
USB. This will work with all music software on Mac OS X. Pro Tools used to
insist on Pro Tools compliant hardware, but even Pro Tools 9 onwards supports M
Audio gear.

Your keyboard will work with Logic no problem. Most MIDI controller keyboard /
mother keyboards tend not to have any sound hardware built in, as it is not
required. However, you can use MIDI enabled synths and workstations etc to
perform the same task, but obviously these tend to cost more.
Overall, Garage Band is pretty accessible, the only major hurdle is that it is
not possible to edit MIDI events.

Seems like a big number of us have requested improved support in this area from
Apple, and I imagine a number of users have probably emailed Apple regarding
Logic X. So here's hoping, as I really miss using this baby.

Hi Chris

Yes, you're correct, that's the exact keyboard I have. So great to hear that
it is compatible. If that's the case I will go and look to see what the price
of ProTools is and, if it's something we can afford I'll try and obtain it
assuming, of course, you can buy it on line and download it. What's the
difference between Protools and Protools HD? I'd imagine that I would only
require ProTools unless it's going to make a huge difference.

 supports M Audio gear.

Your keyboard will work with Logic no problem. Most MIDI controller

it is not required. However, you can use MIDI enabled synths and
workstations etc to perform the same task, but obviously these tend to cost
 more.
Overall, Garage Band is pretty accessible, the only major hurdle is that it

Seems like a big number of us have requested improved support in this area

Hello Andy,

Here's the link:
https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/39019/get-iplayer-automator

Here's how to use GetIplayerAutomator.

You need to press Return after entering the programme name in the search
box. You then select the one you want from the Results table and click Add
to queue. Then interact with the tool bar and click Start. Stop
interacting with the tool bar and go to last visible item where you can
follow the progress of the download.

Cheers,

Yep, Airport Express just died and I suppose I really shouldn't complain given
that I bought the unit 4 years ago, those things get nice and warm so I guess
it was only a matter of time before the heat the unit generated destroyed the
thing.

Anyway I've just ordered a new airport Express and I'm wondering if anyone on
list has one of the newer models and what the differences are if any, does the
newer model perform any better than the old for example.

Re: Logic Pro X Initial Findings

2013-07-17 Thread Chris Gilland
I'm actually the one who did those ProTools podcasts on Applevis.and I'm at
part 7 right now. I've had an extremely! extremely! busy week, and thus
haven't been able to do more, but things are settling down, so I'm gonna
probably either tonight or tomorrow get back to it, and continue with
recording part 8.

Gordon,

The HD version is a software / hardware integrated solution that has been
designed to work with Pro Tools Avid hardware. So avoid this version
unless you have a lot of cash and want to go down this route.

In the meantime, why not check out the podcasts on Apple Vis. There are
about 7 of them, and I can't comment on how good or bad they are, as have
not listened to them yet.

You will find part 1 at:

Your keyboard will work with Logic no problem. Most MIDI controller

Overall, Garage Band is pretty accessible, the only major hurdle is that
it is not possible to edit MIDI events.

I'm not yet sure of 100% accessibility. Haven't got that far as yet. However,
we're starting to wonder whether ProTools would be worth while for our needs as
we're only wanting to do multi-track recording, mixing and editing. If Logic
works, then great. My problem re ProTools is that I don't think you can
buy/download on line. You have to wait for boxed shipments it seems, which I
am not willing to do. Regarding the iLocker, I thought that was only for the
free trial. I actually have one of those smart dongles but haven't got around
to using it yet. I meant to try ProTools a while back, and again yesterday but
if you cannot buy/download, then it's a damp squibb for me and I'll just have
to hope that Logic works, or else resort to the less powerful tools like Reaper
and Amadeus Pro. Those tools are quite powerful and I'm not knocking them.
But I don't believe they have the multi-track / mixing functionality of
ProTools or Logic Pro X by quite a way.

iLocier, as it's called, requires the use of a smart dongle. You create an
account and then buy a dongle. More and more applications are moving towards
this for their trials as it's a far more powerful way for them to enforce
trials without cheating.

As the Mac Access Dot Net administrators, we do our very best to ensure that
the Mac-Access E-Mal list remains malware, spyware, Trojan, virus and
worm-free. However, this should in no way replace your own security
strategy. We assume neither liability nor responsibility should something
 unpredictable happen.
