Are you sure you are not hitting f12 or f11 or something like this. this can
cause some strange behavior sometimes.

This sounds like a file possibly the xml file has somehow got screwed up, so,
if I were you, i'd try creating a new ITunes library and see if that solves the
problem.
I know its a pain as it may mean rebuilding your library from scratch, however
